The Four-Fold Disciple

A Tuesday Night Lesson on the Book of Hebrews, 4:14-16

Emet Campus Ministry takes this Tuesday Night study to the Neu Chapel at the University of Evansville. Why? Because we want to tell everyone what good news it is to be able to hold fast to the Son of God, Jesus Christ.

At the end of Hebrews 4, we are told that Jesus understands us and our weaknesses in every respect, yet he is without sin. He understands what it is like for us to be sad, lonely, or suffering. The good news is that we can have confidence in holding fast to Him because He shows us grace and mercy.

Scripture tells us that Jesus is gentle and lowly in heart, that He invites us to draw near to Him, especially when we have sinned or feel shame. Anytime, anywhere, we can come to Him.

A Tuesday Night Lesson on the Book of Hebrews, 4:1-13

Looking back on Hebrews 3, we see that the Exodus generation was kept from God's promises due to their lack of faith in God. What was God promising? Rest, and it's a promise that remains. God's Word points us to the fact that He wants us to rest. He promises to give us eternal enjoyment in His presence and rest from sin, suffering, and striving.

But this promise is only for those who believe, and God's and our desire is to see many enter His rest. By turning to Jesus, loving Him, and leaving sin, one can be sure in the promises of God. This is a truth from God's Word, which is living and active, capable of transforming, cutting, challenging, comforting, and exposing us. As John Frame said, "When we encounter the Word, we encounter God."

A Tuesday Night Lesson on the Book of Hebrews, 3:7-19There are three kinds of people we can see when it comes to the Christian faith:1. Those who don't profess or have faith.2. Those who profess to be Christian, but have no evidence for their faith.3. Those who genuinely believe and have a faith that produces fruit.We see patterns of this in the Old Testament references made in Hebrews 3, where the author gives warning against one's heart being hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. A practical way for Christians to produce fruit is to remove evil in their life and call one another out on sin. As the Puritan John Owen said, "Be killing sin or sin will be killing you." A Tuesday Night Lesson on the Book of Hebrews, 3:1-6

What does God want you to do with your life? Life is full of anxieties over making the right decisions, whether that's choosing a major, a job, or a spouse. But being able to make these decisions doesn't give us what our calling or destiny is supposed to be.

From the beginning of Hebrews 3, Christian Barrett teaches young adults that Christians share a heavenly calling, and that we are urged to "consider Jesus." By considering Jesus, we can live in light of our calling and destiny, which is to know and be known by God and to spend eternity with Him.

In this video, Christian shares some practical ways for someone to consider Jesus, which begins with asking God to help you live for Him.

A Tuesday Night Lesson on the Book of Hebrews, 2:5-14

"One of the purposes of the Bible is to afflict the comfortable and to comfort the afflicted." - R. Kent Hughes

In this lesson, Drew Sons shares a question that is prompted by Hebrews 2:10: "Why was it fitting that God would send His Son to suffer for His people?" To answer this question, he pulls five reasons from the text and teaches young adults the good news and bad news that follows.

For the Christian, the good news of sin being paid for.

For the non-Christian, the bad news of sin deserving of wrath.

A Tuesday Night Lesson on the Book of Hebrews, 2:1-4

In this lesson, Christian Barrett reminds young adults of the gospel truth while warning them of the dangers of drifting. But what does drifting look like? It can be believing things such as:

"I'll focus on my faith when I graduate."

"I'll have time to read my Bible on the weekends."

"I just want to do what makes me happy, surely God wants me to be happy."

Hebrews 2 begins with the exhortation that Christians must pay close attention to the message that they have received. By paying close attention to His supremacy and greatness, we can avoid the gradual, quiet movement that prevents us from focusing on Him.
