Is the Protestant Reformation over? After visiting Rome and exploring its churches, basilicas, religious art, and historic Christian sites, I came away with five important observations about Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, and the state of Christianity in Rome today.In this video, I examine the continued role of indulgences in Roman Catholic theology and practice, the prominence of Mary in Catholic devotion, and the way many of Rome’s churches can feel more like museums than places of Christian worship. I also consider whether Rome is truly as Christian as it appears and why the theological issues raised during the Protestant Reformation still matter for Christians today.At the same time, Rome possesses a remarkably rich Christian history. From the witness of the early church to the legacy of Christian art, architecture, martyrs, and theologians, Rome remains an important place for understanding church history. The goal of this video is not simply to criticize, but to evaluate what I observed through the lens of Scripture and the gospel.

Was Clement of Rome a pope, as the Roman Catholic Church claims today? What does his letter to the Corinthians, 1 Clement, actually teach about church authority, unity, repentance, faith, leadership, and the resurrection? Clement of Rome is one of the most important early Christian voices outside the New Testament and a bridge from the Apostles to the Patristic era of the church. His letter to the Corinthians, the same church Paul wrote to, was written during a major conflict: certain church leaders had been removed, jealousy and division had taken root, and the church needed correction.

In this video, Christian Barrett walks through his letter, 1 Clement, discusses whether the early church in Rome held to the same authority as later Roman Catholic claims describe, and how Clement exhorts us to unity, rest in Christ, and endurance to the end.
