  • Trafficked for 20 Years: Where My Story Could Have Changed

CONTENT ADVISORY: This episode discusses human trafficking, exploitation, and trauma and may be difficult for some listeners. Please care for yourself as you listen.

"When I look back at my life today, I can see things I couldn't see when I was living as a trafficking victim. There were moments when someone could have asked another question, connected another piece of information, or recognized something I didn't yet have the words to explain."

In Episode 7 of The Freedom Equation: Solutions for Ending Human Trafficking, Survivor Sandy Storm looks backward at the progression of her exploitation from childhood into young adulthood and examines the missed opportunities where a different question, relationship, piece of information, or professional connection could have changed the trajectory.

At six years old, Sandy was a child living inside dysfunction and exploitation without the perspective or language to understand what was happening. By twelve, she was running away and moving through law enforcement, juvenile detention, probation, mental health, and treatment systems, while the underlying reality of her exploitation remained largely unseen.

As she grew older, the circumstances, people, and environments changed, but the pattern of exploitation continued. What could look from the outside like confidence, independence, bad decisions, addiction, or delinquency could actually be the result of years of conditioning, trauma, manipulation, and survival.

Sandy shares these experiences not to point fingers or rewrite history, but to ask a more important question:

What can we recognize sooner next time?

A runaway child may be communicating that something is wrong. An unexplained injury may create an opportunity to ask another question. A vulnerable young person cycling through multiple systems may have pieces of a story that never become connected.

Individually, those pieces can look disconnected. Together, they may reveal a larger pattern.

This is where The Freedom Equation begins to take shape. No one person, organization, or profession has the entire equation. When professionals connect what they are seeing and allow different perspectives to sharpen one another, there are greater opportunities to interrupt exploitation.

    In this episode:

    • The progression of Sandy's exploitation from age six into young adulthood
    • How behavior can communicate what a child does not yet have the words to explain
    • Missed opportunities across multiple systems
    • Why awareness without connection can leave vulnerabilities unaddressed
    • How professionals can recognize opportunities to interrupt exploitation
    • Why connecting information across professions matters

  • How We END Human Trafficking: The Freedom Equation

CONTENT ADVISORY: This episode discusses human trafficking, exploitation, and trauma and may be difficult for some listeners. Please care for yourself as you listen.

What does ENDING human trafficking actually look like?

For the past five episodes, we've explored how traffickers target, groom, and exploit vulnerable people, the vulnerabilities they look for, and the economic forces that allow trafficking to continue. Now it's time to bring those pieces together and ask a different question: How do we END human trafficking?

In this episode of The Freedom Equation: Solutions for Ending Human Trafficking, Survivor Sandy Storm shares her vision for changing the trafficking equation through accountability, justice, restoration, protection, restitution, and professional collaboration.

Sandy believes traffickers and buyers must be held accountable for their crimes. Victims need opportunities for justice, and survivors need opportunities for healing, freedom, and restoration. Vulnerable people need to be protected before exploitation happens, while families and communities need to be strengthened. Restitution is often an afterthought, but should be a central focus.

None of this can be accomplished by one person, organization, or profession.

Law enforcement, prosecutors, intelligence professionals, healthcare and mental health providers, educators, advocates, social services, businesses, faith communities, survivor leaders, families, and communities each bring an important piece of the solution.

No one has the entire equation. That's why we need each other.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Sometimes collaboration creates sparks. Different professionals may challenge one another, see situations differently, or recognize things others have missed. But when we stay focused on protecting people rather than protecting our egos, grant opportunities, or organizational turf, those differences can make us sharper and strengthen our collective response.

Sandy also shares why meaningful choice is such an important part of restoration. In her own life, control was the language of trafficking, while choice became part of the language of freedom.

The Freedom Equation is built around a simple idea: we don't have to do everything, but we each have a part to play.

Bring your expertise, experience, relationships, resources, authority, and influence. Then connect your piece to the people who hold the pieces you don't.

That's how we change the equation.

    In this episode:

    • Why accountability for traffickers and buyers matters
    • What justice, healing, freedom, and restoration can mean for victims and survivors
    • Why prevention must be part of ending human trafficking
    • Why families and communities matter
    • Why multidisciplinary collaboration is essential
    • How “iron sharpens iron” applies to this work

  • Vulnerabilities Traffickers Look to Exploit | The Freedom Equation

CONTENT ADVISORY: This episode discusses human trafficking, exploitation, and trauma and may be difficult for some listeners. Please care for yourself as you listen.

Traffickers look for opportunities, and one of the ways they create those opportunities is by identifying vulnerabilities they can exploit.

In this episode of The Freedom Equation: Solutions for Ending Human Trafficking, Survivor Sandy Storm examines the vulnerabilities traffickers look for and how understanding those vulnerabilities can help professionals recognize opportunities for prevention and intervention.

In her latest book, The Truth About Human Trafficking, Sandy shares how traffickers recognized vulnerabilities throughout her own life. As a child, she was vulnerable simply because she was a child. Later, instability, running away, addiction, relationships, and other circumstances created additional opportunities for exploitation. The circumstances changed, but the pattern remained: someone recognized a vulnerability and used it for their own benefit.

Instead of focusing only on someone's behavior, professionals can ask better questions: What happened? What need is this behavior meeting? Who has influence over this person? Who is benefiting? What choices does this person believe are available?

There isn't one perfect trafficking-victim profile. Traffickers adapt their approach to the vulnerabilities and circumstances of the people they target. Understanding those vulnerabilities helps professionals recognize when someone may be taking advantage of another person's circumstances.

This is also where professional collaboration becomes so important. A teacher may notice a change in behavior. A healthcare provider may see something during an appointment. A therapist may recognize a trauma response. An advocate may understand the person's circumstances. A law enforcement officer may encounter that same person in another setting. Another jurisdiction may already have information about someone connected to them.

Individually, those pieces can look disconnected. Together, they may reveal an enterprise.

    That's why iron sharpens iron.

Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

When we are willing to listen, ask questions, challenge assumptions, and learn from one another, those differences can make our collective response stronger.

The Freedom Equation asks an important question: How can we strengthen the person and close the gap?

We can create fewer opportunities for traffickers to step into those gaps and exploit them.

    In this episode:

    • Why traffickers look for vulnerabilities they can exploit

    • How vulnerabilities can create opportunities for exploitation

    • Why connecting information across professions and jurisdictions can change the picture

    • How professional collaboration can create opportunities for prevention and intervention

  • How Traffickers Exploit Their Victims: The Business of Trafficking | The Freedom Equation

CONTENT ADVISORY: This episode discusses human trafficking, exploitation, and trauma and may be difficult for some listeners. Please care for yourself as you listen.

    Human trafficking has a customer.

Someone is willing to exchange something of value for access to another human being. And if we're serious about ending trafficking, we can't keep leaving that person out of the equation.

In this episode of The Freedom Equation: Solutions for Ending Human Trafficking, Survivor Sandy Storm explores the business side of human trafficking and explains why understanding exploitation requires us to look at the entire marketplace.

In her book The Truth About Human Trafficking, Sandy teaches the Human Trafficking Triangle:

    Trafficker → Buyer → Victim

    Or, in marketplace terms:

    Supplier → Demand → Product

The trafficker treats a human being like a commodity. The buyer creates demand. And exploitation becomes profitable.

Sandy shares how recognizing this economic component helped her understand her own experiences differently. For years, she separated what happened to her into categories such as sexual abuse, violence, addiction, domestic violence, and exploitation. Eventually, she recognized the common thread:

Other people were benefiting from her exploitation.

She also explains why professionals must learn to look beyond a single encounter. Individually, the pieces can look disconnected.

Together, they may reveal an enterprise.

    That's why iron sharpens iron.

Different professionals bring different pieces of the equation. Sometimes those perspectives challenge one another, and sometimes sparks fly.

But that sharpening can make investigations stronger.

In this episode, Sandy also introduces Frontline Activation, the work she does with Detective Heidi Chance to provide training and operational support for law enforcement.

    In this episode:

    The Human Trafficking Triangle

Why trafficking is a business, not a love affair

    How the buyer creates demand

How Sandy's own story helped her recognize the economic component of exploitation

Why professionals need to connect information across encounters, systems, and jurisdictions

Why different professional perspectives can strengthen investigations

  • How Human Traffickers Groom Victims: Bond Up, Boundaries Down | The Freedom Equation

CONTENT ADVISORY: This episode discusses human trafficking, exploitation, and trauma and may be difficult for some listeners. Please care for yourself as you listen.

    Grooming doesn't always feel dangerous.

    Sometimes it feels like love.

    Attention.

    Protection.

    Belonging.

    Someone finally seeing you.

That's what makes grooming so effective.

In this episode of The Freedom Equation: Solutions for Ending Human Trafficking, Survivor Sandy Storm explores how traffickers can build a relationship with a potential victim while simultaneously breaking down healthy boundaries and increasing control.

In Chapter Two of The Truth About Human Trafficking, Sandy introduces a central principle:

    Bond up. Boundaries down.

Traffickers may use attention, praise, gifts, money, drugs, a place to stay, promises, romance, protection, or opportunity to create connection and meet legitimate needs through an illegitimate relationship.

Over time, a victim may begin to believe:

    They understand me.

They're the only person I can trust.

They've done so much for me.

    I owe them.

Understanding this process helps explain why questions like “Why doesn't she just leave?” can miss what has happened. Outsiders often encounter the relationship after conditioning has already taken place. They don't see how the bond was constructed or how boundaries were gradually dismantled.

Sandy also explores an often-overlooked reality: traffickers may groom the people around the victim as well. Family members, friends, organizations, and community members may come to see the trafficker as trustworthy or credible, making disclosure even more difficult.

And this is where the Freedom Equation comes in.

    Professionals need one another.

Sometimes the perspectives don't immediately agree.

Sometimes the disagreement is the sharpening.

    Proverbs 27:17 says:

“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

    Ask:

“What are you seeing that I'm not seeing?”

When we allow different experiences and expertise to sharpen one another, we become better equipped to recognize exploitation and intervene earlier.

    In this episode:

    Bond Up. Boundaries Down.

How grooming builds trust while breaking down boundaries

Why victims may defend or remain connected to traffickers

Why “Why didn't she just leave?” misses the effects of conditioning

How traffickers can build credibility with the people around a victim

How professionals can use different perspectives to recognize exploitation earlier

How healthy relationships, boundaries, trusted adults, belonging, and communication can help change the equation

  • Why I Believe We Can End Human Trafficking | The Freedom Equation — Episode 1

Content Advisory: This episode discusses human trafficking, exploitation, and trauma and may be difficult for some listeners. Please care for yourself as you listen.

I was trafficked for twenty years.

It started when I was a six-year-old kindergarten student.

And for years, I didn't even know that what happened to me had a name.

I'm Survivor Sandy Storm, author of The Truth About Human Trafficking. After surviving trafficking and spending nearly two decades working in the counter-trafficking field, I've come to believe something that may surprise you:

    We can end human trafficking.

But we won't end it through awareness alone.

We won't end it by expecting one person, one organization, or one profession to solve everything.

We change the outcome when we bring our different expertise, experience, resources, and influence to the table and allow them to sharpen one another.

    That is The Freedom Equation.

In this first episode, I introduce the vision behind The Freedom Equation: Solutions for Ending Human Trafficking and share the “lightbulb moment” when I began recognizing the pattern of exploitation throughout my own life.

I'll introduce the Human Trafficking Triangle and explain why understanding the roles of the trafficker, victim, and buyer is essential to understanding how the trafficking marketplace works.

We'll also explore Proverbs 27:17: As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.

Sometimes collaboration creates sparks, and that should be expected.

When law enforcement, prosecutors, intelligence professionals, healthcare and mental-health providers, educators, advocates, social services, survivor leaders, families, businesses, faith communities, and others bring their pieces together, we can become sharper, stronger, and more effective at disrupting trafficking and protecting people.

No one has the entire equation. That's why we need each other.

    In this episode, we explore:

Why I believe human trafficking can be ended

My journey from survivor to counter-trafficking professional

The lightbulb moment when I recognized my own trafficking

    The Human Trafficking Triangle

    Why awareness alone isn't enough

    Why multidisciplinary collaboration matters

  • How Traffickers Target Their Victims: The FIND Framework | The Freedom Equation

Content Advisory: This episode discusses human trafficking, exploitation, and trauma and may be difficult for some listeners. Please care for yourself as you listen.

    Traffickers look for gaps.

A child who wants attention. A teenager desperate to belong. Someone struggling with addiction. Someone who needs money. Someone looking for love. Someone who needs somewhere to sleep.

They find the gap, and then they offer themselves as the solution.

So what happens when we learn to recognize those gaps before a trafficker can exploit them?

In this episode of The Freedom Equation: Solutions for Ending Human Trafficking, Survivor Sandy Storm explores how traffickers target potential victims and introduces the FIND Framework from her book, The Truth About Human Trafficking:

    F - Focus

    I - Investigate

    N - Notice

    D - Develop or Detour

Sandy explains how traffickers can identify vulnerabilities and opportunities, gather information, and decide whether to develop a relationship with a potential victim or move on to another target.

She shares how, looking back on her own life, she can now recognize moments when people identified her vulnerabilities and offered counterfeit solutions.

This episode also turns toward prevention and introduces an important question for every professional, parent, and community:

If traffickers are looking for gaps, what happens when we get there first?

We can strengthen the people and systems standing in those gaps.

Because no one has the entire equation.

That's why we need each other.

And that's where iron sharpens iron.

    In this episode:

The FIND Framework: Focus, Investigate, Notice, Develop or Detour

How traffickers identify vulnerabilities and opportunities

Why there is no single “perfect victim” profile

How technology can create new opportunities for access and information gathering

How vulnerabilities can become openings for exploitation

A personal reflection from Sandy's own trafficking experience

Why vulnerability never transfers responsibility from the predator to the victim
