Speaking of security: You’ve probably heard the concept of the risk/reward ratio. It’s way more common a conversation in Greg Howell’s occupation than it is in mine. The concept works like this: You simply divide your net profit (the reward) by the price of your maximum risk. If you have a risk-reward ratio of 1:5, it means you're risking $1 to potentially make $5.

Then there are times when digits and dollar bills aren’t really at stake.

The year was 1812 and the shop was near Paris, France. A young three year old named Louis was playing in his father’s harness shop. He was playing with a sharp object known as an awl. Maybe it was a normal play for a boy who had been raised around the tools since birth. Maybe his father was distracted.

Regardless of how it happened, it only took a moment for the awl to plunge into right eye. With a terrible wound such as that, it is unlikely that the eye could have been saved, even today, but what might have been prevented was the ophthalmia and total blindness that spread to both eyes.

So this year is a tough one for me. As most of you know I have five kids — and before you ask, I am very well aware of what causes that. They are a blessing. I always wanted to be a dad and it is all that I expected and so much more. Now, some of that “so much more” are the tough parts. I didn’t anticipate everything that being a dad would entail, but I am learning on the fly.

The reason this year is tougher than most is because its not only physically exhausting but it is somewhat emotionally draining. You see, I have a Senior this year. That comes with a lot of responsibilities. Go check out our Helping Healing Humor podcast we did back at the beginning of the school year on Senior Year responsibilities — it’s truly overwhelming.

But not only do I have a Senior, I have a kindergarten also—and three in between.
