About the book:
Organising with others for human, animal and earth liberation can be one of the most empowering experiences alive. Yet frontline resistance comes with risks to our physical and emotional health that can lead many people to burn out and abandon social movements altogether.
This book is about overcoming burnout, linking the author’s journey of recovery with wider systemic forces such as classism, sexism and power dynamics in groups, poverty, chronic illness and ableism, as well as grief and trauma from prison and state repression. It is a call for models of mutual aid and collective care. Simultaneously deeply personal and acutely political, for anyone involved in grassroots organising, it is a must read.

This episode dives into detail exploring a case study on herbal support following trauma. Learn about potential herbal and nutritional options for Tina:
Tina (she/her) is a single mum whose son has been in prison the last 18 months. Since he’s been inside his self-harm has worsened to the point of repeated suicide attempts. Tina is nervously exhausted from phone calls and prison visits. Her arthritis has flared up so badly that she is now using a walking stick on very bad days. She has body pain all over and isn’t refreshed by sleep. She feels tense and unable to relax on a daily basis because she is so worried about her son. She takes Ibuprofen and Paracetamol regularly but no other medication. She is in early menopause and sleep is affected by night sweats. She has lost her appetite.

This episode dives into detail exploring a case study on herbal support following trauma. Learn about potential herbal and nutritional options for Alicia:
Alicia (she/her) was recently arrested. It was her first time and she was surprised by how awful it felt and how much it has affected her. She has been having panic attacks and feels absolutely terrified of being arrested again so she has withdrawn from several groups and now feels lonely and lost. She feels fine ‘otherwise’, is in good health, exercises a lot with her dog and grows her own vegetables. She has no allergies and is not on any medications.

This episode dives into detail exploring a case study on herbal support following trauma. Learn about potential herbal and nutritional options for Ahmad:
Ahmad (he/him) recently came from Afghanistan. He was on the move for several months. He said his food was ‘terrible’, there was ‘no sleep’ and that ‘many bad things happened’. He is generally young and athletic and in good health. But he has regular evenings of rage and distress and experiences suicidal thoughts. He doesn’t sleep until 4am and wakes up at midday. He has sores at the corners of his mouth and wounds that have not healed for nearly two months. He only has a supermarket voucher to get food and is not able to cook hot meals. He misses home and misses his family greatly. He is Muslim and will not use alcohol tinctures.

This episode dives into detail exploring a case study on herbal support following trauma. Learn about potential herbal and nutritional options for Eden:
Eden (they/them) has been engaged in grassroots organising very intensely for a long time. They are completely exhausted. They are sleeping 9-11 hours a night now but have been sleeping only a few hours a night for several months/years up until recently. They don’t wake up feeling refreshed. They need four coffees to get through the day. They don’t really have an appetite. They have been vegan for 12 years but don’t really have the energy or enthusiasm to cook any more. They don’t take any medications or supplements. They are feeling increasingly disillusioned and depressed with the horror of the world.

This episode dives into detail exploring a case study on herbal support following trauma. Learn about potential herbal and nutritional options for Tom:
Tom (he/him) has recently left prison. He is on prescribed methadone but is trying to reduce the amount he takes and ideally come off it but is struggling with withdrawal symptoms. He isn’t on any other medication. He has terrible stomach cramps and night sweats. He can hardly sleep because of so much anxiety and restlessness. He is scared to sleep because of recurring nightmares of time spent in segregation. When asked about diet, he eats mostly fast food and isn’t a confident cook and doesn’t have much money right now.
