Lisa Taylor, President at Challenge Factory joins us to talk about the current state and the future of work in Canada's media sector.

Lisa says the telecom owned media companies face two major challenges, particularly in the case of news and journalism. First, is to retain and regain the trust of diminsishing audiences. Second, it to retain and regain the trust of its workforce.

By design, Bell, Rogers and Corus have little or no meaningful connection with their small and medium sized markets across the country. It's not only resulted in diminishing audiences but diminishing revenues, particularly in local markets. As a predictable result, local news outlets have suffered.

Lisa compares this shift in legacy media to the shift mirrors to the shift we saw in the tech sector some 20 years ago. Tech companies became too big to the point where they lost their strategic edge, leading to broad spread layoffs. It made room for new spinoffs and startup opportunities.

Is that the way forward for strong media and journalism?
