Joining John today: Christopher Armitage, plus Tammye Nash of the Dallas Voice and Jake Wittich of Windy City Times
We have the latest updates from Minneapolis including Border Control Commander Bovino’s departure, Border Czar Tom Homan arrival, and local CEOs finally speak out. Is it enough?
Then, a special conversation with Minneapolis-based author Patrick Nathan about his book Image Control: Art, Fascism, and the Right to Resist. In it, Patrick explores “art, social media, photography, and other visual mediums to understand how our culture and our actions are manipulated, all the while building toward the idea that if fascism emerges as aesthetics, then so too can anti-fascism.” Get your copy here: https://bookshop.org/a/82376/9781640095540

John Parker takes you to the front lines of the Twin Cities’ response to “Operation Metro Surge,” featuring on-the-ground interviews from a community gathering with State Senator Scott Dibble and leaders from the ACLU and Transforming Families. We dig into how Minnesotans are organizing to support neighbors facing ICE deployments and highlight new mentorship programs helping trans families find safety in the state. Later, director Allison Vincent joins the studio to preview Woosh, a new production at the History Theatre blending Irish folklore, Civil War history, and the music of the Northern Shores.
Beans Velocci joins John to discuss their new book Sex Isn’t Real: The Invention of an Incoherent Binary (Duke University Press, 2026), looks at how sex emerged as a privileged way of sorting bodies not despite but because of its incoherence. Rather than focus on those whom scientists and medical doctors cast out of male and female categories as pathological aberrations, the book traces how knowledge producers brought ill-fitting bodies back into a normative binary with no harm done to sex itself. It follows a sprawling cast of researchers through zoology, eugenics, gynecology, statistical studies of sex, and transgender medicine as they self-fashioned their expertise, created enmeshed fields of sex science and race science, and made science the way to know sex. Research for this project has been generously funded by the American Philosophical Society, the Kinsey Institute, and the Yale Fund for Lesbian and Gay Studies.
