In this week's episode of the Gaining Health podcast, host Karli Burridge discusses the SELECT Trial and the results for implementation into obesity medicine practice.  The improvements in cardiovascular disease and obesity management through semaglutide (GLP-1 receptor agonist) medication treatment have now also been shown in patients without diabetes.  This landmark study is a step closer to victory for the obesity treatment community and patients struggling with obesity management.

Florencia Ziemke, MD, DABOM: Founder and Medical Director for Evexia Medical: Nutrition and Weight Management. Dr. Ziemke has nearly two decades of clinical and research experience in the field of Obesity & Nutrition Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency, clinical nutrition fellowship, and clinical research, in Boston, MA. She has worked at top national centers such as Boston Medical Center and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center with affiliations at Boston University, Tufts Medical School, and Harvard Medical School. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and a diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She serves on the Network Advisory Committee of The Obesity Society, Editorial Board of Obesity Pillars, and is a Scientific Medical Associate for Obesity Matters. She lives in Jupiter, FL with her husband and two children. She enjoys outdoor activities, swimming, and creating fun recipes with her family.

Breaking News: The FDA approved Eli Lilly’s drug, tirzepatide, for the treatment of obesity! The name for this drug is  Zepbound™ and it is, the first and only obesity treatment of its kind that activates both GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide) and GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) hormone receptors. Zepbound, like all other AOMs,  is indicated for adults with obesity (with a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or greater), or those who are overweight/ preobesity  (with a BMI of 27 kg/m2 or greater) and also have weight-related complications.
In this episode, Karli reviews the news release and discusses things like, when Zepbound is expected to be available, pricing, and the studies that lead to its FDA appoval.

In this week’s episode of the Gaining Health Podcast, host Karli Burridge speaks with Dr. Rukhsana Iqbal about the intersectionality of mental health, eating disorders, and obesity. They discuss the bi-directional relationship between obesity and mental health disorders, trauma-informed care, the importance of shared decision making and patient-centered care, managing weight-promoting anti-depressant and anti-psychotic medications, diagnosing and managing eating disorders in patients with obesity, and important take-aways for effectively managing patients who are affected by mental health disorders, eating disorders, and obesity. 

Dr. Iqbal is a board-certified physician and specializes in treating patients with both medical and psychiatric illness. She received her medical degree from Northeast Ohio medical university in Rootstown, OH and went on to do a dua residency in Family Medicine and psychiatry at university Hospital/ case Western Reserve University in Cleveland OH. She then completed her fellowship in consult-liaison psychiatry at northwestern university in Chicago IL. She has practiced as an adult psychiatrist at Hinsdale behavioral health in Hinsdale IL for the past 13 years. She is an adjunct professor at Midwestern University in Downers Grove, IL and teaches family medicine residents from Loyola MacNeal hospital in Maywood, IL.

They discuss how and why Lori first became interested in obesity medicine, the challenges and rewards of opening her own clinic, Western Colorado Weight Care in Grand Junction, Colorado, and Lori’s highlights and take-aways from Obesity Week 2023!

Lori Wenz, MSN, AGNP-C, BC-ADM, FOMA is a national board-certified nurse practitioner who has developed expertise in the  treatment of diabetes and obesity. She holds a board certification in Advanced Diabetes Management, Certificate of Advanced Education in Obesity Medicine from the Obesity Medicine Association and is a Fellow of the Obesity Medicine Association. She has been providing obesity treatment since 2014 and has been instrumental in developing two comprehensive obesity treatment practices within health systems. She is the founder and owner of Western Colorado Weight Care in Grand Junction, Colorado. Ms. Wenz has been an active member of the Obesity Medicine Association since 2017, and currently serves on the CME and Medical Surgical Committees. She has dedicated her career to providing compassionate, evidence-based treatment to help patients manage their weight and improve their health. She also serves as a mentor and educator to nurse practitioners, physician associates and physicians interested in learning more about treating obesity. Outside of work, Lori enjoys spending time hiking, kayaking, paddle boarding, reading, and taking walks on the beach with her husband Adam and their two daughters.

They discuss how and why Jeff became involved with medical fitness, and the importance of resistance training throughout the lifespan, especially for people undergoing weight reduction as part of their obesity management. Jeff shares some great resources that he has developed to help patients and clinicians, and explains how he is bridging the gap between medicine and fitness. 

Jeff Young, Kinesiologist, CSCS, ACSM-EIM has a unique set of skills and experience that allows him to provide valuable insights and solutions to clinicians, fitness professionals, and laypeople. Through his roles as the President-elect of the American College of Sports Medicine's Greater New York Regional chapter, Chair of the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Special Populations SIG, and his work as a subject matter expert for various organizations, he has developed a deep understanding of medical fitness and strength and conditioning. He is dedicated to using this knowledge to help others improve their health and well-being through personalized, principle-based approaches, as well as educate clinicians on how to bridge the gap between their field of expertise and fitness/medical fitness. Additionally, Jeff served as an internship provider for exercise science and kinesiology students at several colleges and universities; a board member for Penn State University’s Kinesiology Affiliate Program Group; and a sought-after speaker and educator (has presented at over 20 national and regional conferences, and over 20 colleges and universities).

In this episode of the Gaining Health Podcast, host and obesity expert, Karli Burridge, discusses a review article published in Frontiers in Endocrinology, Volume 13, in November 2022, about The Importance of Estradiol for Body Weight Regulation in Women.

Despite the general recognition that appetite changes throughout a woman's menstrual cycle and during periods of hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, estradiol, or women's hormones in general, are often not discussed when talking about appetite and weight regulation. Karli reviews the highlights of this review article, and discusses estradiol's direct and indirect impact on appetite and weight, and sheds light on the common concerns that many of our female patients present with.

In this week’s episode of The Gaining Health Podcast, host Karli Burridge continues the conversation around obesity education in medical schools, PA schools, and NP schools, as she interviews one of the world’s top leaders in obesity medicine and obesity education, Dr. Scott Butsch. 

Dr. Butsch is the Director of Obesity Medicine at the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute at Cleveland Clinic. He is a board certified and fellowship trained physician in obesity medicine and clinical nutrition with expertise in the management and treatment of complex patients with obesity. 

 Dr. Butsch is an international leader in obesity and nutrition education and has been instrumental in the development and design of competencies and curriculum in obesity for undergraduate medical education and for all inter-professional education. He is the creator and Program Director of the Obesity Medicine Fellowship at Cleveland Clinic, the creator and Director of Obesity Medicine Preceptorship at Cleveland Clinic, as well as the creator and Director of the APP fellowship in Obesity Medicine at Cleveland Clinic. Additionally, he is the creator and co-director of ObesityLIVE, a virtual obesity case conference which runs monthly with presenters from around the world on complex obesity cases. 
 
 Dr. Butsch is an author and nationally recognized lecturer, and is a Master clinician in obesity medicine with clinical expertise in combination obesity pharmacotherapy, and also in medical and nutritional complications of Bariatric and metabolic surgery.
