2024 marks the silver anniversary of Red Dwarf VIII, and as such, we’ve all been sentenced to bring you a brand new series of Garbage Podcasts to mark the occasion, starting this week with ‘Back in The Red: Part I’ which aired 25 years ago today.

How does the change of set up reorientate the series? Which one is Argyle and which one is the baby? And does the world still love a bastard when he paves the way for Little Britain?

All these questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew put the eight run of the show in the dock and get Mr Thornton to read it it’s rights.

After three action packed episodes, Duct Soup sees the show bringing everything down to basics with an episode that tries to harken back to episodes like Marooned by trapping the crew in a confined and stressful situation to see the tensions that arise between them. But does it work?

Is the late addition of this episode to the series reflected in the way the character relationships are presented? How much time has elapsed since the last episode? And can you still buy cottage cheese, with or without pineapple chunks?

In this edition of our continuing celebration of Series VII’s 25th anniversary, we look back at the third episode of the series, Ouroboros.

With Chris Barrie having (sort of) departed the show, a change of line up is in order. Cue the introduction of Chloë Annett as Kochanski, giving Lister a new sense of direction and changing the dynamic of the crew for many years to come. All of this along side returning antagonists, call backs to the start of the show and some paradox laden changes to Lister’s backstory.

How would the dynamic of the series have changed if this was the opener? Is this iteration of Kochanski different in characterisation too the ones we’ve seen previously? And what are the incestuous implications of Lister being his own father thanks to jizzing in a tube?

All these topics and and more will be casually tossed off as Alex, James and Andrew go back over the episode that sets the course for the rest of the series.
