It’s been 25 years today since Legion first aired, and we’re marking the occasion with the latest edition of our Series VI anniversary commentaries.
It’s perhaps one of the best examples of the sixth series, and one that has some of the show’s most quotable lines in the lightbulb gag. In a great example of a vilan of the week with a strong central concept, it manages to find a fresh take on examining the psyches of the charecteristics while also providing would is arguably the best piece of slapstick the show has ever produced.
Which shopping channel previously occupied Legion’s base? Just how revealing can green lycra be? And if you make a passing remark about watching this episode on blu-ray when you record a podcast in September, can anyone be arsed to do an edit to remove these comments when said blu-ray is then delayed until 2019?
All these inevitably negative questions and more will be discussed out as Alex, James and Andrew pool their minds to take a look at the second instlament of the sixth series.

We’ve been offline for a while while our team has variously dealt with such life altering events as new homes, new children and new underwear. But with 2018 marking the silver anniversary of Red Dwarf VI, we’re naturally back with a brand new series of Garbage Podcasts to the occasion, starting this week with Psirens which aired 25 years ago today.
As the starting point for this series, it’s interesting how much it comes across as a soft reboot with a reminder to the audience of the set up and a gradual reintroduction to the charetcers alongside a plot with some siliarilty to what we’ve seen previously. Yet as the start of Series VI, it also marks the start of several big changes. No Holly and no Red Dwarf, and in their place, running gags, an action adventure feel and a greater emphasis on gags.
How much does this episode mark a bold new start for the show? Why did Annita Dobson believe this episode would help her get down with the kids? And what link do a unicycle and a dead baby have to this episode’s warm up?
All these children’s entertainment questions and more will be discussed out as Alex, James and Andrew juggle various topis to look at this first instlament of the sixth series.

With today being the 30th anniversary of Red Dwarf, how best to mark the occasion than to go back and look at the first episode? Unfortunatly, we already did a commentary for that for the 25th anniversary. So rather than repeat ourselves, we’ve instead looked to Red Dwarf USA.
Featuring what is essentially a remake of The End, it’s a project that is notorious for having been unsuccessful in getting a various for a whole host of reasons. With with all the intervening years since it was made, how does it fare looking back at it today?
We look at the pilot in both it’s edited and unedited forms as well as looking at various interviews from the time to try to assess the overall project
Could it have been a success? What worked and what didn’t? And why did a confusion over a chocolate bar cause so much bother to Doug?
All these sweet questions and more will be filled as Alex, James and Andrew look back and what might have been, all while only just managing to avoid doing silly accents.

In case it has passed your attention, today marks 30 years since Red Dwarf first aired. Given we’ve already celebrated the first episode on the podcast for the 25th anniversary, we’re instead joining in the festivities in a slightly different way this time around.
So in the first of two podcasts to be released today, we look to the present day and take look back over the most recent series, and discuss where things have been left off and the state of Red Dwarf now that it has reached its thirtieth year.
How did the series compare to the ones that went before? What does the future hold for Red Dwarf? And after new years of new shows, how do we fill the void?
All these empty spaces and more will be filled as Alex, James and Andrew look back over Series XII and ahead to what may come next.

It may have finished as quickly as it started, but we’re already at the end of Red Dwarf XII. But while it may be the last of the series, Skipper has proved to be an episode worth waiting for.
It’s a show of two halves, but when the first half revolves around a strong joke idea and the second revolves around some hugely fan pleasing moments, what’s not to love?
Is Lister quite bright? What does the appearance of the original ship model mean for the show’s continuity? And how daunting is the prospect of sleeping with a 6 foot tall anthropomorphic rat?
All these warm and snuggly questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew look skip through the major themes of the episode.

With the penultimate edition of Red Dwarf XII, we see a plot first teased in the run up to Series X finally realised in M-Corp. But while we knew the rough plot idea, what we didn’t know was that like a David Bowie live show circa 1973, it was going to involve a lot of mime.
Yet this obvious area of comedy to work in only makes up a small part of the densely packed epiosde. With some dark themes, great visual gags and some genuinely pleasing fan service, this epiosde is certainly a contender for one of the best of the Dave era.
What are the similarities to the novels? What Socail media account does The Cat most likely have? And if Chippy was in Series X, would he be telling Lister in a sinister voice that he’d run out of condiments?
All these saucy questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew look at the obvous as well as the harder to see isues raised by the episode.

What a difference a week makes, as the fourth episode of Red Dwarf XII delivers what may well be the most solid espisode of the Dave era so far.
Election epiosdes aren’t a new concept for sitcoms, but the way that it is handeled in this episode plays to the strengths of the Red Dwarf universe, while also presenting it in a way that we may never have expected to see before.
Doe the ship have biggoted vending machines? Is Talkie Toaster’s return the first suprise this series that wasn’t spoiled in the publicity? And would you some toast?
All these bready questions and more will be addressed as well as a few currenty ones too, as Alex, James and Andrew tally the votes on the episodes merits.

The second episode of Red Dwarf XII sees us finally getting the much discussed ‘the one where everyone’s Kryten’ episode of the show that Doug and the cast have been teasing for so long.
For an episode that starts with this as a concept, its possibly surprising that we also have various other plot strands all vying for attention at the same time, perhaps with some taking the attention away from others. But what effect does this have on the episode, not to mention the balance of humour and plot?
Does the episode live up to expectations? What does it tell us about Kryten’s relationship with the crew? And why might people associate the phrase ‘don’t be ovulating tonight’ with Chris Barrie’s voice?
All these questions and more will be addressed as Alex, James and Andrew don rubber masks to discuss the episode. Nothing to do with the episode of course but just because why spoil your weekend routine because of a podcast recording?

It may only have been a year since Series XI, but that hasn’t stopped the 12th series of Red Dwarf being any less anticipated. And with Cured now having aired on Dave following it preview a week before on UKTV Play, we’ve once again gathered to discuss a brand new episode of the show.
In this edition, we look through an episode that features a lot of scenes we really didn’t expect to ever see in the show. We also take a look at what makes some of this episode’s set pieces work so well, and discuss where this leaves the Red Dwarf universe. And considering they were filmed back to back, we take a look at what if any differences there are from Series XI.
Is there truly any such thing as evil? Just how does the Cat get dry so quickly? And doesn’t Alex bear a worrying resemblance to Stalin?
All these questions and more will be addressed (apart form the last one which has been purged from the discussion) as Alex and James are joined by Joey from The Official Red Dwarf Fan Club to discuss this series opener.
