Jesus' third passion prediction leaves us implicated in our selfish and ungodly ambition. The beauty of Jesus is that condemnation is not his game. The work of the Spirit of Jesus is to bring life. Therefore we must discern and receive conviction as it comes, we must learn to listen to our Jesus.

Looming in the background is this pervasive desire for the crisis(s) to be over, for things to just go back to normal. In other words, we want our regular rhythms back. We want to pick up our side-hustles again; we want to move about the world unencumbered by crisis. But what if this isn't God’s heart for us. What if the very things we’re striving to get back to are the things that shackle us to comfort and complacency?

God’s heart is not for “better” gatherings, more hype, more prestige; rather, he wants to gather our hearts to himself so that we could be the gift to the world he’s always desired we be.

The emerging hope, challenging though it is, is that through this we could become the type of resilient disciples who stand with Jesus and one another no matter what comes.

Our hope is that God would not lift this thing - whatever this something is - until he’s done shaping us into the type of people who carry his name with integrity, love, and compassion.

The Kingdom of God and its in-breaking reality is at the center of Jesus’ life and ministry. If “Kingdom of God” is fuzzy "christian-ese," think about the Kingdom of God as the place where God’s will is done completely 24/7 365; the place where peace and justice reign. And the center of this reality are children, the lowly. The Kingdom of God, according to Jesus, belongs to the vulnerable and the voiceless. Jesus’ indignation comes because his disciples are misrepresenting the heart of the Kingdom.

This teaching explores the implications of Jesus' life as he orients himself to & toward the vulnerable.

Marriage is not a trap and it’s also not fulfillment. Whether we are married or not, Jesus’ vow to his bride the church, his covenant, makes space for us to be transformed into the type of people who trust, who can be vulnerable, and who can actually love. In Jesus we see what covenant faithfulness truly is, we behold true integrity, true fidelity; even while we were sinners Christ died for us.

Whether you’re married or not God is forming us to be people of love. The covenant of marriage happens to be just one space that God refines us.
