The Geek Buddies

Today on The Geek Buddies, we review HBO's Deadwood the Movie which premiered last week on the pay channel. The film sees the return of almost every one of your favorite characters from the iconic Western series that starred Timothy Olyphant, Ian McShane, John Hawkes, Paula Malcolmson, Robin Weigert, Kim Dickens, W. Earl Brown, Anna Gunn, Molly Parker, Brad Dourif, Gerald McRaney and Dayton Callie. After a 10 year hiatus and numerous news items teasing a feature film or two made for TV films, HBO and David Milch have brought us a film that is somewhere in between and serves a series finale for the beloved show. The synopsis reads: In the “Deadwood” film, the indelible characters of the series are reunited after ten years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.
Massive Deadwood fans John Rocha and Shannon McClung and Deadwood newbie Michael Vogel give you their thoughts on this movie. They discuss the acting, direction, storylines and feel of the movie. Also, Rocha and Shannon let you know if they like this film as a capper to the series and Vogel lets you know if this got him motivated to go back and watch the series. Join us for a fun discussion as we revisit the town of Deadwood.

On this episode of The Geek Buddies (Ayyyyyy!!!), John Rocha,  Michael Vogel and Shannon McClung discuss the new Picard trailer from CBS ALL Access and if it sets the right tone for what the show might be. Shannon tells us about his trip to the new Star Wars Galaxy's Edge land at Disneyland and what he enjoyed most about the experience. And speaking of experiences, Michael talk to us about his experience attending 2019's Drag Con in LA and what surprised and delighted him the most about the experience. Then the boys get into the main topic of the episode and explore what Booksmart and Brightburn's underperforming box office and Aladdin's overperforming box office might be saying about the kinds of movies, fans might want to see more of or less of at the theater. They debate if the tentpole franchise movie is forcing smaller, independent movies to streaming services or if this was simply an issue of a botched roll out by the studio behind Booksmart. A lot of topics are covered in this episode with the usual honesty, fun and knowledgeable takes you've come to expect from The Geek Buddies!
