Michael O’Brien’s last bad day was a head-on collision with a motorist while he was training on his bike on the sweltering roads of New Mexico that almost killed him. Fast forward through weeks of rehab and the moment when Michael remembered a lesson from playing sports growing up: when things are going too fast, take a timeout and breathe.
Michael began pausing, breathing, and reflecting . . . a practice which helped him heal not only his physical wounds, but also his lifelong emotional wounds of never believing that he was enough.
This conversation is an epic journey through the topics of:

Sometimes, no matter how impressive our resume or list of accomplishments are, we can’t seem to outrun the sense that we’re never going to be enough or do enough. And when we spend decades living under the shadow of that “not enoughness,” we learn to please everyone else except ourselves. As a result, we end up living life on everyone else’s terms instead of our own.
This week’s guest, Cris Howard, spent decades people-pleasing, trying to prove that she was enough, and living up to impossible standards of perfectionism. Despite a successful corporate career, being an elite Ironman triathlete, and several other accolades, she never loved and fully accepted herself. It wasn’t until she received a melanoma diagnosis that she paused to consider how she wanted to live life on her terms. She quit her job, listened to her inner voice, and decided to reconnect to herself by hiking the Appalachian Trail.
Cris’ journey is one of deep healing and unlearning the patterns that keep us in spirals of shame and unachievable perfectionism. By learning to listen to and trust who she is on a soul level, she was able to find a deep source of power that allows her to live life on her own terms.
This week’s conversation is sure to inspire you to find your own grit. To listen to your own inner voice. To reconnect to your soul wisdom. And to learn how to find a life on your own terms.

Are you one of those Gen X’ers who has a closet full of clothes that you don’t wear anymore? Maybe they don’t fit right or don’t feel like “you” anymore? Or you have to dress a particular way at work that doesn’t really align with who you are. Or maybe you’re a casual, jeans, t-shirt, sneaker-wearing Gen X’er who’s never uttered the words “personal style.” Well, after this episode, you’re going to have a whole new appreciation for what personal style really means.
This week Michele sits down with Holly Chayes, a personal style coach and consultant focusing on everyday genuine style and helping you build and wear the wardrobe you love. (Even when you’re running late, fighting a cold, and it's laundry day.)
Holly's got the goods on everything from clearing out and systematizing your closet, to owning your style at work, to understanding why high-quality shoes are a must. With her 3-step system, Holly will get you stoked for finding your authentic style and being brave enough to wear it!
Michele and Holly also get into the importance of allowing yourself to grieve the identity shifts that have caused your wardrobe to change. Whether it’s grief over the size that you used to be, or grief over a shirt you wore on that first date that didn’t work out, it’s critical to allow yourself the space to grieve as you venture out of your closet to embrace your personal style.

Welcome to the follow-up episode in the conversation with Christina Lord where Michele and Christina get into practical tips to support Gen X’ers in grieving the loss of a parent. As always, the first step is to acknowledge and validate your grief, as well as the past grief that can re-surface later. Christina discusses how important it is to be kind to yourself, tune into what your body needs, and seek support when you’re grieving. The conversation also highlights the impact of identity shifts when Gen X’ers lose a parent, like the identity as a child or caregiver. Christina and Michele also share their experiences of what can feel helpful or unhelpful for other people to do or say when you’re grieving. Christina emphasizes how breathwork and coaching have been instrumental in her healing process and offers practical breathing exercises for managing stress and emotions. If you haven’t done so already, please go back and listen to the first part of this conversation in Episode 9: https://www.lifefromthesummit.com/podcast/9

Welcome to Part 2 of this month-long series on navigating parental loss as a Gen X’er. This week Michele sits down with Christina Lord, owner of Authentic Action Coaching, who shares her experience of navigating the loss of her parents and the impact it had on her life.
Christina discusses the differences in grieving for her mother and father, and the importance of giving herself grace and space to feel her feelings. As Gen Xers, we often try to tough it out and do things on our own, but it's crucial to ask for help and support during times of loss. Christina emphasizes the need for Gen Xers to learn how to connect to their grief and support each other through the process.
The conversation explores the need to prioritize healing and self-care, the challenges of navigating grief in a society that avoids the topic, and the significance of understanding the mind-body connection. This conversation with Christina prompted a second part, which will be published in the next episode, on specific practices to support Gen X’ers in healing through the loss of our parents.

This month marks the start of a special series to address the journey that so many Gen X’ers find ourselves on–losing our parents. In Part 1, your host, Michele, discusses her personal experience of losing her mom, Patty, in 2012 from a sudden heart attack at the young age of 58. Michele shares some of her fondest memories of her mom and how her mom was her biggest champion. And when her biggest champion was gone, without warning, Michele found herself feeling untethered and unequipped to adequately process that grief. Over the next 12 years, Michele slowly brought herself back to life and is now sharing 10 ways that she’s healing that grief. Michele emphasizes that your grief is your own personal journey, and one for which no one else has any business dictating timeframes or parameters. Michele ends the episode by sharing a poem that her mom wrote, which Michele entitled Patty’s rainbow. If you’re a Gen X’er who has lost one or both of your parents, this episode will remind you that you’re not alone and that you can find ways to heal through your grief.
