  • Ep. 33: 5 Lessons from Black History To Take Action Against Political Oppression

If you live in the United States–or even other parts of the world–and you’ve been looking at America the last few weeks and saying, “What the fuck?”–then you are not alone.

In the face of overwhelm, upheaval, and massive change, a couple of things can happen.  We can sometimes feel paralyzed and unsure of what we can do.  Or maybe sometimes we want to leap into action and rage against the machine.  And maybe more often than not, we just want to bury our heads in the sand and wait until it’s all over.

I’ve experienced all of that the last few weeks.  And I imagine that many of you have too.

In the face of this current overwhelm and upheaval, I wanted to look back in history to find lessons on which we can draw.  And, because it’s Black History Month, I wanted to look specifically at Black leaders and activists who have valuable lessons to teach us about how to engage in political activism.

Like Audre Lorde, for example, whose vision of self-care as a radical act of political warfare for marginalized communities can make us rethink our commercialized notions of “self-care” today that focus on things like spa treatments and mani-pedis. Lorde’s vision of self-care envisioned liberating ourselves through reconnecting to ourselves, to nature, and to our joy so that we can more fully support the liberation of the collective.

Or Septima Poinsette Clark, who showed us the critical importance of education and literacy in exercising our citizenship and voting rights.

During times like this, it’s vital that we take our cues from Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian, and Latino/Latina/LatinX people who have been leading these fights for centuries.

And it’s equally important to remember that our actions–or lack thereof–matter.  They have ripple effects . . . whether we’re working behind the scenes like Bynard Ruskin (the gay civil rights activist who was the right hand man of Martin Luther King, Jr.), or refusing to bow down to oppressive forces (like 15-year-old Claudette Colvin who refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus 9 months before Rosa Parks did).

This episode invites you to expand your knowledge and education beyond what you’ve been taught. To look to those with different backgrounds and experiences than you.  And to have faith that you and your actions will have an impact.

  • Ep. 32: Scrappy Menopause: A Candid Conversation to Empower Gen X Women with Suzanne Greiner

If you were born with ovaries, you will go through menopause. Many Gen X women are in the throes of peri-menopause and menopause right now. And, most men will know women who are going or will go through menopause.

Menopause is as much a part of life as other hormonal fluctuations we experience as teenagers or during or after pregnancy (for those who have children).  Yet for decades, menopause has been stigmatized and mocked, leaving women to navigate this critical life shift in silence and often, shame.

Well no more!  It’s time to get scrappy about menopause!

In the last five or so years, we’ve seen a shift around menopause.  Conversations are now happening from social media to the doctors’ offices.  There remains, however, a tremendous amount of misinformation about what menopause is, the numerous symptoms, and what women can do to support themselves through this transitional period.

For example, do you know the average age of peri-menopause?

Do you know that there are over 70 symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause?  Or that 20% of women in peri-menopause and menopause do not experience hot flashes?

Or that Black women experience menopause (on average) for 3.5 years longer than white women?

And, most importantly, do you know that a 2002 Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study was responsible for abruptly ending many women’s use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) based on faulty data claiming that HRT leads to increased heart disease and breast cancer?  And that this study has since been repeatedly debunked?

This week’s conversation with Suzanne Greiner, certified nurse coach and seasoned registered nurse, will shine the light of knowledge on these and many other issues around menopause.

So, let’s get scrappy, Gen X-style, when it comes to reclaiming our power, our voice, and our vibrancy through menopause.

Ep. 31:  Rising from the Ashes:  How Gen X'ers Can Ditch Hope, Take Action, and Breathe Fire into 2025 (pt 2 of 2)

“Hope is not a strategy. Your strategy is connecting to your deepest power inside you.”

This is part 2 (or maybe part 2.5) of this series on hope.  This episode was recorded before the start of the Los Angeles fires on January 7, 2025, and was originally supposed to be episode 30.

But to recognize the extreme devastation of the L.A. fires, I recorded a different episode for Episode 30 last week, to offer something deeper than hope to allow everyone to rise from the ashes of the L.A. fires:  Faith.

So, instead of being Episode 30, part 2 of the original conversation on giving up hope is now Episode 31.

Make sure to go back and listen to Episode 29 to learn the 5 problems with hope...

and then listen to this week’s episode to learn 3 steps that you can take to tap into something much deeper than hope.

    🗝️ Key takeaways:

[02:45] My personal journey of darkness and survival mode

[05:18] Why clinging to hope didn't work

[10:14] Rising from the ashes Daenerys Targaryen style

[12:33] 3 steps to replace hope and take wise action

    [33:55] Taking Action in 2025

[34:19] Big takeaways and questions to ask yourself

Understandably, the invitation to give up hope may not sit well with some of you.  Why is that?

And, if that’s the case, don’t force yourself to give up hope.  Start with the 3 steps that I share in the episode and let the rest figure itself out.

  • Ep. 30: The L.A. Fires: Critical Tips for What You Can Do (and What You Can Avoid Doing)

On January 7, 2025, several fires broke out in the Los Angeles, California area that ripped through neighborhoods, destroying thousands of homes, businesses, and other structures, displacing people and animals, and taking the lives of some. Two of these fires have been the third and fourth most destructive fires in California history.

And a week later, they are still burning, with the possibility of increasingly strong Santa Ana winds destroying the progress that exhausted firefighters have made.

In the face of horrific tragedy, people often look for hope. Given that I started a 2-part series last week on how to give up hope (with the intention of posting part 2 of that series today) I wanted to add a new footnote to that series today to talk about:

🗝 [09:17] 3 things not to say or do for victims of the fires

    🗝️ [16:20] 6 concrete things we can do;

    🗝️ [27:49] a Metta or Loving-Kindness practice; and

🗝️ [31:52] something stronger than hope

And these tips don’t just apply for supporting people through the L.A. fires . . . they apply any time we see someone suffering in the face of unimaginable loss or heartbreak.

As Gen X’ers, we can learn to harness the grit, determination, and camaraderie that we were raised with to support others . . . and ourselves . . . through devastating tragedies. Our constant growth edge is to learn to do so without pushing toxic positivity or unsolicited advice on others, trying to “fix, manage, or control” their experiences, and taking action in ways that we don’t burn ourselves out.

This week’s episode gives insights on how we can do all of that . . .

as well as how we can find something stronger than hope to help others and us move through these tragedies . . . .

⭐️ Please go to the episode show notes for a list of resources to help the victims of the LA fires.

  • Ep. 29: Rising from the Ashes: How Gen X’ers Can Ditch Hope, Take Action, and Breathe Fire Into 2025 (pt 1 of 2)

“Hope tricks us into thinking that simply “having hope” is enough . . . that if we just keep wishing for a better tomorrow, it will magically appear.”

What better way to start 2025 than to ruffle some feathers?

In this 2-part episode, Michele challenges you to start 2025 by giving up hope!

    That’s right . . . ditch hope! You don’t need it . . . you really don’t.

Instead of hope, we can learn how to take wise action and breathe fire into your year and your life.

Now, a lot of Gen X’ers may be thinking that it’s crazy or defeatist to give up hope.

Afterall, Gen X’ers were raised on hope just as much as we were raised on Saturday morning cartoons and American Bandstand.

Our culture romanticizes hope through movies, books, and religious teachings.

In fact, if “hope” had an advertising agency, its slogan would probably be “Hope: It’s the only light you need to get you through the darkness.”

But, what if we paused to reconsider whether we need hope at all . . .

what if we reconnected to our own internal light . . .

and, better yet, what if we considered whether hope does us more harm than good.

What if we asked, “what is hope really? And why would you want to ditch it?”

Because, as you’ll learn in this week’s episode, hope pulls you away from the present and into the future . . . it seduces you into clinging and attaching to future outcomes . . .

it takes your focus away from what you can do at any given moment . . .

and, most of all, it tricks you into believing the illusion that you can find certainty and control in a life that is anything but certain or within your full control.

Tune in this week to learn:

🗝️ what hope really is, and

🗝️ the five problems with hope.

And remember to come back next week for Part 2, where Michele shares her personal story of deciding to give up hope and, instead, focus on three sources of power that will allow her (and you) to breathe fire into 2025 and beyond.

“You're not stuck. You have a choice. You can do something different. It doesn't have to be this way.”

Are you one of those people who has a hard time saying, “No,” especially at work? Do you find yourself saying, “I can do that,” or “I should do that,” even when you don’t want to do that?

When we spend decades trying to prove our worth through our careers and how productive we are, we develop those habits of saying “yes” to things we don’t want to do, long hours that impact our health, and projects that don’t give us meaning or purpose.

What if you learned to say “yes” to something else, so that you could say “no” to what doesn’t give your life meaning and purpose?

This week’s guest, Eric Nehrlich, learned the hard way that he needed to learn to say “yes” to what gave him purpose, so that he could say “no” to what doesn’t.

  • Ep. 25: The Future of Gen X Health: The Power of Pharamcogenomics, Genetic Testing, and Microdosing with Matt Comneck

Are you one of the 131 million Americans [which is 66% of the adult U.S. population] who is on prescription drugs?

Did you know that according to the Personalized Medicine Coalition, the percentages of people who are on ineffective prescription drugs [i.e., drugs that don’t work best for them], are:

    • 38% for anti-depressants
    • 40% for asthma
    • 43% for diabetes
    • 50% for arthritis
    • 70% for Alzheimer's
    • 65% for cancer?

Most Gen X’ers out there know what it’s like to feel victimized by a formulaic health care system that takes a one-size-fits-all approach to prescription medicine, making you suffer through the trial and error of various medications to figure out what, if anything, works best for you.

In the meantime, your physical, mental, and emotional health suffers, along with your loved ones.

    What if you could:

    • better understand how your body–based on your genetics–metabolizes prescription medications and drugs [like caffeine]?
    • decrease your prescription drug costs and increase the efficacy of the drugs you are taking?
    • access a more tailored healthcare plan that allows you to take more control over your health and your life?

Enter Matt Comneck of Grounded Healthcare.

In this week’s groundbreaking conversation, Michele and Matt get into:

[18:13] Pharmacogenomics [understanding what it is and the future of it]

[24:45] The Intersection of Genetics and Lifestyle

[38:23] Taking Control of Your Health Through Genetic Insights

[41:10] Understanding Epigenetics and Its Impact

[44:56] The Cost of Ineffective Medications

[01:00:14] The Role and Benefits of Microdosing Mushrooms

[01:26:03]  Matt’s Personal Journey with Navigating Grief and Microdosing
