"Be a Great Ancestor"...this is just one nugget of priceless information provided this week by Patricia Solis (pronounced So-Leece). Patricia, among other things, is another global geospatial influencer that we were humbled to have spent some time with. She is currently a Research Professor at thee Arizona State University...Forks Up!...the Executive Director of the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience, and Director and Co-Founder of YouthMappers!!!. One of her many passions is working with young people and generating knowledge and science for, and with the public. "Everything Happens Somewhere"...let that one sink in! This weeks supporting cast included Kent Groh, Sean Fabor and Dr. Nik Smilovsky! Andrew Bernstein was quoted and music was provided by Ruben Blades!
Now for something completely different! Mark Taylor & Kent Groh went rogue and interviewed thee David Pounders for this entirely unscripted episode. To say they had fun would be an understatement!! David is an incredibly interesting human being...who knew engineers had this much personality! As a veteran (did you know there is only one branch of service?), entrepreneur, family man, leader, inventor, prophet, music critic, bigfoot hunter and cubed-earther...David shared a ton of knowledge and wisdom. Don't miss this one when everyone was outside their comfort zone. Music for this episode by Lynyrd Skynyrd...is Free Bird the best song EVER?
We...are...back! Ok...Geoholics...this is an episode that is near and dear to many of our hearts and we appreciate you taking the time to listen. Elise Micheals joined us this week to talk about mental health...specifically a males perspective as it pertains to their struggles with mental illness and the challenges that go along with it. We were also joined by our good friends Peta Cox and Ryan Swingley who showed tremendous courage by sharing their individual stories. This week's cast was humbled and transparent which made for an incredible, value adding episode. Russell Wilson was quoted. Music provided by Dua Lipa!
Check out this heartfelt conversation that we were honored to have with Mr. Ron Nelms, PLS and author of "Big Sticks by Little Sticks". We discussed his personal journey to becoming a land surveyor and the inspiration for this latest book. Ron was very transparent sharing the challenges of recalling life memories and emotions and expressing them on paper, the mentors that have and continue to influence his life, his perspective on the past, present and future of land surveying, and the importance of hard work, perseverance, and humility!! The cast this week included DD, PS and SGG! Don Draper was quoted & Fleetwood Mac provided the music for this episode!
So...much...fun! We took this opportunity to give our listeners a chance to get to know us better. The cast consisting of Kent "Dilfy Dilf" Groh, "Produca Suga" Sean Fabor, Mark "Chief Geek" Taylor, " The Good Dr." Nik Smilovsky, Peta "Survey Geek Girl" Cox & Nik "The Kid" Schlosser all participated in this candid conversation fielding questions from listeners and each other. This is one of those shows that we had high expectations for and it found a way to exceed them! The guys were joined this week by Michael Galen, Attorney at Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Michael focuses on mergers and acquisitions, corporate reorganizations and liquidations, distressed debt transactions, bankruptcy reorganizations, restructurings, creditors' rights, workouts, and other financial transactions. Some of the items discussed include structuring a business correctly, the importance of operating agreements, avoiding risks, things that lead to bankruptcy, when is bankruptcy the right decision, and how to maneuver through this extremely complex process. COG made a remote appearance from an undisclosed location. A looming milestone calls for a celebration that we need your help with! Jordan B Peterson was quoted. Music provided by The Decemberists!
More value was added, more friends were made and another milestone was reached! The guys were joined this week by a slew of "younger" surveyors with a wide range of experience levels including one that has been surveying for less than a week! Tyler Lapointe, Austin Maxwell, Nik Schlosser, Anissa Williston and Tate Childers were all participants on this week's show making it the most guests we've ever had on a single episode! This creates a number of technical challenges and lessons learned (which is a really good thing!), but we promise that there is a ton to glean from this conversation if you'll power through it! Just some of the topics discussed include the skillset required for surveyors today...and in the future, stereotypes, the importance of image/perception, roles of younger surveyors, making yourself marketable, changing the culture, and how more engineers are becoming surveyors! DD takes a cold plunge and Suga Sean may be the best producer yet! Gino (Gyno) Wickman and Nik Schlosser were quoted. Music provided by the Black Moods!
"WE feel the need...the need for speed"!! The guys were joined this week by Travis Bohan, PLS. Travis is not only a handsome man resembling DD's man crush Tom Cruise, but also a very talented and insightful professional land surveyor who also does all his own stunts. Travis is a Survey Manager at Mark Thomas & Company. Little known fact, Mark Thomas was the first consultant allowed to design improvements to Caltrans facilities, with the I-880 Widening project in Santa Clara County in 1987!! We covered a ton during this episode including the challenges of performing survey on mega transportations projects, applying the right technology for each phase of a project to increase efficiency and profit without sacrificing accuracy, importance of the right education for land surveyors, creative yet effective ways to promote the profession (and yourself!), what folks can do to make themselves more marketable and a bunch more that I can't remember at the moment thanks to the leftover Garrison Brothers whiskey! Mark "Big Ticket" Taylor co-hosted and COG makes a big announcement! Henry David Thoreau was quoted. Music provided by Dave Matthews Band (poop droppers)!
