I chatted with Hetty Appleton-Miles Stylist at Burberry who moved to London from Australia 7 years ago.
Hetty’s main job as Stylist for the British brand is styling the looks for the Burberry website and some digital campaigns: from developing the concept with her director to styling up to overseeing the looks on set. Like any other person working in fashion, also her working days are never the same.
From this chat, you’ll hear how she got started in the industry and you’ll be surprised to learn that she started with no formal university education. Although in the podcast she says that educating yourself outside of a traditional degree is fundamental. indeed she took several online courses to understand more about fashion. I asked her about her tips for becoming a good stylist and if this is a career you want to pursue, you will be motivated to know that she believes that styling is a skill that you can practice through work experience and that you can acquire even if right now maybe you believe you might not have it. We also chatted about her recent work trip to Paris, her favorite shows of the season as well as how she separates her personal style from her styling work.

Georgia Rhodes is a final-year student with already a lot of big fashion magazines on her resume including Marie Claire, Glamour, Elle, Harpers Bazaar, CR Fashion Book.
I met Georgia in 2020 as she is one of the students of my online course Break into the fashion industry + The Fashion Writer Accelerator and in the past 3 years, she has achieved so much. I am really proud of her and happy to have been part of her professional journey and excited to share this interview with her to know where she is today.
After an experience with a fashion marketing internship, she realized that writing was what she preferred doing.
She felt the pressure of getting an internship for her placement year especially when she realized that applying to fashion is different from applying to any other job. It was a nerve-wracking experience as her uni didn’t really guide her on how to approach practically the job search process. She then stumbled upon the course Break into the fashion industry and after being encouraged by her grandparents to invest in her career, she enrolled and finally started seeing the first results.
Her first experience with a magazine was at Marie Claire. She was one of the students to get the internship at Marie Claire in partnership with us exclusive for students of our academy. She then went up from there landing one internship after another at other major publications including Glamour, Elle, CR Fashion Book, Harpers Bazaar…
Today, together with writing her dissertation, she is working as a freelance for the luxury online retailer Farfetch as Content Writer as well as writing for CR Fashion Book.
