A short reflection on Psalm 59.v16

The final sermon on St. Pauls letter to the Romans sees Pastor Mike recognising the Glory of God in all of life. In this episode, we also hear voices from the Putin caused crisis in Ukraine, before prayers for the situation and the peace of God in it. Despite the chaos and mess of our sinful human world, God still is working - in His people, in His church. May we in all we do bring Him our praise and glory.

In the penultimate sermon from the series ‘A Church Shaped by Grace’ Pastor Mike Weaver challenges Christians to understand the worldview they should have is not one shared by the vast majority of the world, including some within the church. St. Paul says to be ‘watchful’, and it is this theme of watchfulness in our lives – watching for God and for opposition to God, that all Christians should be mindful of as they seek to live and honour the Lord Jesus.

As we get closer to the end of St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, Paul focuses on partnership[. Although that word is not used, the love of each other – from the church in Macedonia and Achaia (northern-southern Greece) to the Church in Jerusalem was evident, and it is the serving of one another, financially, with gifts of service and in prayer, that the community of Christians are partners in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastor Mike challenges the church today to be such a body of people who know the debt they owe to the church of yesterday, today and tomorrow.

This week’s podcast moves into the closing remarks of St. Paul to the Roman church where he writes his true ambition is to ‘preach the gospel’. Though of course, it wasn’t always so back when Paul was known as Saul and was a persecutor of the nascent Christian church.

Pastor Mike asks what Romans 15.14-24 says to the church today, concluding that all we do must be shaped by the grace of the Lord Jesus, leading to ambition to work for the Kingdom of God sharing the goodness of God in our daily living.

Rev. Maggie Lane brings us the continuing story of what it means to be a 'Church shaped by grace' looking at St. Paul's letter to the Roman Church... 'The apostle Paul encourages us in Romans 15 to activate a spirit of hope through the Holy Spirit, actually to over flow with hope, to be so filled with hope that it spills out of us to impact others. This might present us with something of a challenge in the midst of what can seem like a hopeless time for so many on a personal level, and for the church in our nation. But hope stands alongside other hallmarks that are pleasing to God in a church that is shaped by grace - righteousness, peace, joy, compassion, endurance, inclusiveness and harmony are also highlighted in this passage. What does it mean for us to be a community of faith who overflow with hope in the face of so many challenges?'

In the second half of chapter 14 of St. Paul’s letter to the Romans, he continues to discuss issues of food, and whether eating ‘kosher’ or ‘non-kosher’ for Christians was the way to go, and quite how to steer a path for those disagreeing on the way forward, in matters that are not central to knowing Jesus as your saviour and Lord. Although the context for this writing was the 1st century Roman church, it still speaks into the lives of the church today and quite what we think church should be. Listen as Pastor Mike’s exposition of God’s word brings a challenge to the church today to not hide our faith, or to trap others by it, but rather offer it as a path to liberation through salvation.

The New Year at GMC sees us return to Paul’s letter to the Roman Church and the closing chapters, 14 through 16.  This podcast considers Ch14.v1-12 and wonders aloud at the welcome the church makes to differing opinion. Not just any opinion, but rather the things that are disputable in the Christian faith, you know like tradition and ways we practise as church, but do not impact on the call to a righteous holiness through repentant hearts (which of course should not be in dispute).
