I’m back from a quick weekend away, hanging out some caves. I mean… that certainly wasn’t my whole trip. If you know me, and know anything about the wonderful commonwealth of Kentucky, you know that I found myself in some distilleries, too. That works into this show nicely – we should drink.

I cracked open a bottle of MB Rowland’s Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, which was delicious – it might have been even better than I remember it being when I had it down there!

I also opened up a can of Raquette River American IPA out of New York (a gift from regular listener, Chris) – it was nostalgic, well balanced…and all sorts of tasty.

We talk about the upcoming closure of Fifty West’s Chilicothe taproom, and how they are managing that closure verus some of the other places we’ve seen close. What’s the right way to do things?

On another note: why in the world are we using booze as a political weapon? Will we ever see the end of this?

Simplicity at it’s finest. The Highball isn’t about complication or fancy glasses, crazy garnishes, or a boozy drink… it’s about taking a spirit, and making it more approachable. It’s a thing of beauty when done right – and an embarassment when done wrong.

What makes a great Highball? Where did they come from? Where do you even start?

I promised cocktails, so we’re going to drink cocktails. I didn’t promise that I’d find this week’s cocktail by any means more than randomly flipping through a cocktail book and picking one that looks tasty, though – but as it turns out, that’s a good method. The Fiesta Cocktail turned out to be a good one! It was a good start to some fun stories like the latest in the Lager House collaboration series coming this week, and the introduction of High Grain’s new canned cocktails: all fun stuff.

From there – we had to take a big dive into the deep end as we tried to start unpacking the chaos of By Golly’s and their parent company Epic Eeats. As these things go, though… we got a little sidetracked by the very first part of the story. Looks like there will be more to talk about!
