Over the last three years Apple has celebrated ambitious, creative talent from across SE Asia in a campaign called “Here’s to the Dreamers.” This year, with the theme of “Dream Beyond,” they are shining a spotlight on the developers, musicians, and artists who push boundaries and inspire others to reach their fullest potential. One of this year’s dreamers is our very own, homegrown, Joy Ngiaw. A kampung girl from Pahang who is now a Hollywood composer. She did the score for the Skydance short Blush on Apple TV+, she also made history as the youngest composer to write the logo music for major studio, Skydance Animation. She is just breaking barriers as a Southeast Asian woman in the film and TV scoring world.
Today, on The Goggler Podcast, Uma welcomes special guest Joy Ngiaw for a conversation about her work, her journey to Hollywood, and her excitement at being picked as one of Apple’s “Dreamers” for 2025.
Joy Ngiaw is a Malaysian film and TV composer known for her emotionally rich and inventive scores. She first gained recognition for the score of Blush (Apple TV+), Skydance Animation’s inaugural short film, which earned her the Best Music Award from Hollywood Music in Media and an Annie nomination. She later received a second Annie nomination for her score on sci-fi adventure trilogy WondLa (Apple TV+), collaborating with industry icons such as John Lasseter (Toy Story). Notably, Joy made history as the youngest composer to score a major studio logo for Skydance Animation. Recognized as a leading voice among the new generation of film composers, Joy was nominated for the 2022 David Raskin Emerging Talent Award by the Society of Composers and Lyricists, selected for the competitive NBCUniversal Composers Initiative, and named a 2024 BAFTA Breakthrough USA honoree.
