Back in 1983 when Return of the Jedi released in theaters. Nerds across the word screamed in pain and disappointment when they saw their favorite bounty hunter fall into the sarlacc pit and die. According to Jabba the Hutt, he would be devoured and suffer for a thousand years. Over the decades Boba Fett’s backstory was explored and he was given more depth, but everyone still knew his inevitable death. In the old expanded universe, Boba Fett actually climbed out of the sarlacc pit and survived. So once the canon was rebooted, fans speculated if Boba Fett would still crawl out of the sarlacc pit and survive in the new canon. Flash forward to October 30th 2021, in the premier episode of the mandalorian season 2, we got our first look at boba fett alive and well after the return of the jedi. And then 7 weeks later we were teased to the book of boba fett, the show that would center around the bounty hunter. So not only after all these decades did we learn Boba had lived, but he was also getting his own story that so many people had wished for. The Book of Boba Fett was the 2nd show to come out in the mandoverse. When this show finally wrapped up, how did fans view it? Was it the show of their dreams? Did it match the quality of the previous 2 mandalorian seasons? Was Boba Fett the badass we all thought him to be? Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re gonna talk about the book of boba fett.
To begin this video essay, I want to discuss worldbuilding. An aspect of Star Wars I feel isn’t discussed enough these days anymore. To no one's surprise, there are two different sides to worldbuilding in this series. Firstly there's the main part of the series that takes place on tatooine, and then there’s the worldbuilding that focuses mostly on Mando and his journey. So let’s begin with Tatooine. The worldbuilding here is interesting because Tatooine is already the most prominently shown planet in the Star Wars saga. Btw, I’m just talking about the live action stuff here. You guys know how much I love the clone wars and rebels, but a good portion of the people who are watching this series haven’t watched those shows, only the movies and the mandalorian. So how well does this show build on the world that is tatooine? Before we answer that, what did we already know about tatooine going into this series? Based on the movies, there were 3 different sides of tatooine that we saw. There’s mos eisley and the kinda the wilderness of tatooine that we saw in a new hope, then there's the criminal aspect of tatooine that we saw in return of the jedi, and then there’s mos espa that we saw in the phantom menace and attack of the clones. Tatooine was known for mostly having a variety of different species, none that were really native to the planet. The ones that are mostly native to tatooine are the jawas and the tusken raiders. The jawas get a little bit more fleshing out in the mandalorian season 1, but not much. But the tusken Raiders on the other hand, that is where this series really excels. From the movies, the tusken raiders were literally seen as savages. A New Hope treats them as such, and attack of the clones treats them even worse because they are responsible for brutally murdering Shmi Skywalker.

The Rise of Skywalker, the 9th Episode of the Star Wars Saga was released 3 years and now it's time to do a video essay! Star Wars fans as a whole were already split on the Star Wars sequel trilogy after the last jedi, so when the rise of skywalker came out that only made things worse. JJ Abrams had a lot on his plate with the final installment of the Star Wars Saga, and the rise of skywalker definitely didn't deliver for most. What went wrong for some and what went right for others. In this video essay, we discuss Star Wars Episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker... 3 Years Later!

Star Wars episode 9 the rise of skywalker is the final chapter of the almost universally loved Star Wars sequel trilogy. After the divisive nature of Star Wars The Last Jedi, there was a lot of pressure on writer and director JJ Abrams to deliver something special. Could he please the fans that felt disenfranchised by the last jedi? Could he please fans that loved the first two sequel films passionately? Would this movie wrap up the sequel trilogy while as the marketing suggested serve as a conclusion to a 9 movie saga? Hello Everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re going to talk about Star Wars Episode 9 the rise of skywalker all these years later.
To begin this video, it’s only fair that we talk about the most controversial aspect of this movie, and that is Palpatine’s return. Franky one's enjoyment of this movie almost entirely depends on whether or not Palpatine’s return works for you. Almost everything that happens in this movie stems in some way from Palpatine coming back to life. There are a large contingent of people that love Palpatine’s return, and I’m genuinely happy for you. But the execution of his return arguably derailed the entire trilogy for most people. The Rise of Skywalker as a whole is a prime example of how a cool concept can’t overpower execution. But before I talk about the execution of his return, I want to discuss the most disliked part of Palpatine’s return, how it retroactively affects Return of the Jedi. At the end of that movie, Darth Vader sacrificed his life to murder the emperor and save his son. With the context of the prequels we now know that Anakin fulfilled his chosen one prophecy and brought balance to the force. People love to point out that with the return of Palpatine, it has nullified the fulfillment of the chosen one prophecy. And this is kinda true but also kinda false. One could look at the prophecy and say that Anakin still did fulfill the prophecy, he did bring balance to the force just not forever. The prophecy never said that he would bring balance to the force forever. This is a valid interpretation, but is it really satisfying?

The Last Jedi, the 8th Episode of the Star Wars Saga was released 5 years ago, and it's time to do a video essay! Many Star Wars fans love Star Wars: The Last Jedi, while many people passionately hate this movie. Rian Johnson set to direct one of the most unique Star Wars movies, and he definitely did that. Why is this movie so divisive? What about Rian Johnson makes his movies so controversial? How come all these years later people still blame The Last Jedi for destroying the fandom? In this video essay, we discuss Star Wars Episode 8 The Last Jedi... 5 Years Later!

#StarWars #TheLastJedi #videoessay
Star Wars Episode 8 The Last Jedi is one of the most impactful films on modern pop culture. Not so much because the film was universally beloved, but because this film ripped the fandom apart. It was after this movie that film discourse in general seemed to regress into its worst self. But if we were to just examine the Star Wars community, it seemed like fans were at war with each other after the release of this movie. So many people either passionately loved this movie, or hated it so much that to this day all these years later they cannot forgive the sins Rian Johnson made. Why is this the case? How did a movie about space wizards and rebels become this nuke in the fandom? How did this movie ruin and hopes of this trilogy for some while carrying it to great heights for others? And as a second movie in a trilogy, does this movie serve its intended goal? Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we are going to talk about Star Wars episode 8 the last jedi all these years later.
Contrary to some revisionist historians, the lead up to the last jedi was filled with hype. The Force Awakens at the time was seen by many as a successful reentry into the franchise or as a cheap rehash of a new hope. But either way almost every Star Wars fan was dying to see this movie. Being involved in the Star Wars fandom between the force awakens and the last jedi was so much fun. People kept speculating constantly about secrets of the sequel trilogy or what would happen to certain characters. The two most discussed topics were Rey’s parents and Snoke’s origins. The amount of theories about these two topics was staggering to say the least. I will never forget some of the most ridiculous theories that people had about who Snoke really was. But Rian Johnson kept promising viewers that this movie was not going to go the way they thought. And well when the movie came out, people were not happy. It turns out Rey’s parents were no one. They were random people who sold Rey away and died. And even more egregious to some we got absolutely no answers to who Snoke was. He was just killed off and treated as an afterthought. The phrase that spawned from the discourse of this movie was subverting expectations.

Andor is the newest Star Wars show on Disney plus and this video essay is why it's great. Cassian Andor has been in Star Wars before in 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Even though Cassian died in that movie, the series Andor is about Cassian's origins and how he goes from being a normal man to becoming a Rebel. Lucasfilm created something special, and in this video essay I explain why Star Wars Andor is great!

Andor is brilliant. This is a show that is nothing like what we’ve gotten before. The characters, the worldbuilding, the story, the production is all top tier in this series. In this video, we’re going to dive deep into these different aspects of Andor and why it’s arguably the best Star Wars show we’ve gotten on disney plus. Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re going to talk about Andor, and why it’s great.
Before we begin talking about the 4 arcs of the first season, I want to focus on something I’ve never really focused on before when talking about Star Wars. I wouldn’t call it world building so much as I would call it immersion. After my initial watch and even my rewatch, I had an incredibly tough time pinpointing why this show felt so reel. Star Wars has never felt so grounded in literally anything it’s done before. But I couldn’t put my finger on why. Sure there aren’t any gigantic space battles or galactic ending events. So it couldn’t be something story related but rather something production related. So I went back to Rogue One and after watching it, when it came to this shot of Krennic looking up at the death star, it finally hit. This shot always resonated with me because it’s really the first time the viewer can grasp the scale of the size of the death star from an individual's perspective. Sure he got shots like this of the death star in a new hope of the death star, but considering the background is the openness of space it’s still tough to grasp the scale. Rogue One often shot many of its scenes from the characters perspective. Not all the time but a good amount of time. With Andor almost none of the shots are these wide angle introduction shots. Sure we have a few, but almost everything is directly from the angle of the characters or a medium shot around the characters. Even when we get establishing shots they’re from the angle of people in starships. Now I want to emphasize that these shots don’t automatically make a show great. The Star Wars movies are full of these wide beautiful shots and they enhance the movie greatly. But Andor isn’t a space opera, it’s about people. I’ll get more in depth with this in a bit, but the whole theme of Andor is how rebellions and empires are mostly run by normal people. If this show wants to focus on normal people, then the best thing I could do is try and put the audience in the perspective of the people. Like these one shots of the tie fighters flying by. Never has a single tie fighter seemed so menacing. But when looking at it from the perspective of an individual on the ground then of course a tie fighter will be threatening. Moments like these and moments like looking up at a star destroyer are what grounds Andor. Another way it does that is by adding such incredibly minor details that viewers can subconsciously relate with. In Force Awakens something that has always been on the back of my mind is that during the Starkiller base fight, none of the characters seem cold.

The MCU now has 4 full phases and we’re gonna talk about it. What about the MCU are we gonna talk about? Well all of it. That’s right, I’m going to talk about every single movie and show in the first 4 phases of the MCU. I’m going to review them all and then rank them. Now for those of you more familiar with my work, you know I like to dive deep into stories and talk about them. But the MCU has 37 movies and shows and there’s no way I’m going to dive deep into all of them. So my rule for this video is to spend like 2-3 minutes on each of the stories and then just move on. This way I have enough time to explain my brief thoughts and then move on in a reasonable time. So the way I’m going to approach this is by going in release order, from Iron Man all the way to Wakanda Forever. And then at the end of the video I’m gonna rank them all. Now before I start, let me give some minor caveats. The MCU has a lot of specials that I could include but I’m not going to. Like there's all these 1 shots and that werewolf special, I haven’t watched those so they don’t count. And the other thing I’m not gonna include is what if. I haven’t watched it and I don’t want to either. Plus it’s an animated anthology series. That’s like including star wars visions in a ranking video. You just don’t do it. Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re gonna talk about the Marvel cinematic universe, 4 phases later…

House of the Dragon Season 1 is borderline a masterpiece. Never in a million years did I think that the first season of house of the dragon could rival the first season of game of thrones? Regardless of whether or not you liked this first season or whether or not you think it’s as good as game of thrones, House of the Dragon put the game of thrones franchise back on the map. How did this happen? How did a franchise that seemed dead for 3 years make such an explosive return. How did House of the Dragon capture the magic of what made the early seasons of game of thrones so great? Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we’re talking about House of the Dragon season 1 and why it’s great.
What makes the game of thrones universe work so well? Why did people fall in love with the early seasons of Game of Thrones and now the first season of Game of Thrones? Well there are two reasons, one is the way the world of westeros is designed, and the other is Martin’s rules of writing. What makes the world of Westeros so compelling from a narrative perspective? Well, Feudalism makes for fantastic storytelling. The core of any great drama is the relationships between the characters. It doesn’t matter how great the visuals look or how dense the battles are, if the characters aren’t three dimensional and if the character relationships aren’t well established, then your story has failed as a drama. In a feudalistic world such as westeros, the intimate relationships between a small group of people have immense consequences. In the modern western world, if I were to go to someone and murder them, then their family and close friends will be extremely pissed sure, but they don’t have the ability to draw an army to their side, and niether do I. In dramas that take place in modern earth the consequences of character relationships are usually smaller in scale. In a feudalistic world like Westeros, if someone from House A kills someone from House B, then depending on how important those houses are thousands of people can be drawn to war. In the original Game of Thrones, when Joffrey orders the execution of Ned Stark, the entire North marches to war. In the first episode of House of the Dragon, when we see Viserys’ heir and wife die, the consequences of said deaths can affect the stability of the entire realm. Viewers are often drawn to stakes.

#StarWars #TheForceAwakens #videoessay
I remember a time when the notion of a Star Wars episode 7 seemed like a dream. George Lucas openly said there is no episode 7, disney bought the franchise that all changed. Disney announced not only a Star Wars Episode 7, but an entire sequel trilogy. And boy did this trilogy end up being divisive. When there’s online discourse about the sequels, rarely do people seem to argue about the force awakens. It’s usually either intense disdain or praise thrown at The Last Jedi or The Rise of Skywalker. Why is this the case? Well, let’s travel back in time to 2015 when the force awakens came out. Hello everybody and welcome to another video, my name is the gold man and today we will be talking about Star Wars: Episode 7: The Force Awakens… all these years later.
On October 30th, 2012. The Walt Disney company purchased Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion. Now to some that may seem like a lot, but considering Disney bought Fox for $71 Billion, $4.05 Billion doesn’t seem like much. Shortly after the acquisition, Disney CEO Bob Iger immediately announced a Star Wars episode 7 coming in 2015. At the time this was mostly met with excitement. Star Wars was in a bit of a dry phase. Contrary to what revisionist history may say, the prequels were still relatively unliked at the time. So not only was the announcement of an episode 7 exciting for a lot of people, but the idea that George Lucas wouldn’t be directing it was also exciting to some. Don’t believe me, go back in time and watch videos from 2012-2015 and tell me how much George Lucas praise there was back then. In early 2013, writer and director JJ Abrams was brought onto the project with Michael Arndt set to write. Shortly thereafter was the first time we started to see production problems behind the scenes. Arndt wanted more time to write the script, but Lucasfilm wanted the film to be released in 2015. So ultimately Arndt left the project and JJ Abrams and Star Wars legend Lawrence Kasdan finished the script, and production began late 2014. I remember this time as clearly as if it were yesterday. The excitement for this movie was unparalleled. Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil, and Carrie Fisher were confirmed to be returning, and a new cast of actors were hired for the movie too. When trailers for this movie were released, people went nuts. You can go back in time and watch compilations of grown men crying seeing Han Solo for the first time in 32 years. A major part of the marketing for the force awakens was pretty much that this movie was going to be everything the originals were, and nothing like the prequels. Abrams and his team put an emphasis on the notion of practical effects and less politics and great acting. Early on in the production of this movie, Lucas was originally a consultant. But decided to leave the project after he realized Lucasfilm was not too keen on having his ideas. As the movie approached release, its hype was starting to get out of control. Online ticket websites were crashing for the first time due to high demand. People would analyze every frame of the trailers just to get a hint of what was going to happen. And on December 18th 2015, The Force Awakens released in theaters. Financially the movie was a major success.

#RogueOne #starwars #videoessay
Have you ever wondered why this movie is called Rogue One? Sure the name of the team is Rogue One. But why did the writers choose that name? Why Rogue One? Well, Rogue One is the rogue one. At the time, there were 7 Star Wars movies, all a part of a saga. All titled Star Wars Episode 1-7. But in 2016 we were getting a new kind of movie, a spinoff movie. After this movie came out, there were 8 Star Wars movies, and this movie was the rogue one. So, Rogue One: A star wars story. All these years later. How did it turn out? It appears to be the most popular of the 5 Disney star wars movies for sure. In fact, its popularity arguably led one of the characters to get his own show on disney plus. If you were to look up Rogue One video essay, nothing but positive videos show up on the feed. So does this movie hold up as one of the best Star Wars movies. Did the experiment of star wars spinoff movies pay off? Did Rogue One add anything to the Star Wars mythos, or was it a simple cash grab? My name is the gold man, and let’s take a look at Rogue One: A Star Wars story all these years later.
One paragraph. All it took was one paragraph to inspire the creation of this movie. In 2003, the visual effects supervisor of the Star Wars prequel trilogy John Knoll suggested the idea of a story about the rebel spies who stole the plans to the death star. These concepts were used in a show George Lucas had called Star Wars underworld, even with a pilot being filmed. But the show was deemed too expensive and wasn’t made. Around 10 Years later when Disney bought the franchise, Knoll felt that he owed it to himself to pitch the idea again but this time to the disney execs. Lucasfilm was interested in creating spin-off movies with their Sequel Trilogy. And when Kathleen Kennedy heard the idea, she loved it. In May of 2014, Gareth Edwards was brought on as director of this spinoff movie, and Gary Witta would write the script. What the two of them wanted was to tell a war film. Star Wars does have the word wars in it, so tell a war story. Initially, the production of the film went smoothly. The script was finished, actors were hired, and filming began on August 8th, 2015. Gareth Edwards prior to Rogue One was best known for his Godzilla film. While the film was nothing special, if there was one thing Gareth Edwards understood was scale. Godzilla is a giant monster, and Edwards wonderfully conveyed that in his movie. With Rogue One, Edwards masterfully captured this scope and scale into Rogue One. Star Wars has always been known for its incredible visual effects. But I wouldn’t go as far to say that the original 6 Star Wars films had great cinematography. Sure there were some brilliant shots, but they didn’t dominate the films. Rogue One may be the most visually beautiful Star Wars film. It’s in a close tie with The Last Jedi. Regardless of how the story panned out, the visuals would at least be incredible. Another aspect of the production of the film that was rather interesting was the introduction of deep fake technology in movies. Since this movie took place directly prior to A New Hope, Edwards wanted to include Grand Moff Tarkin into the story. But since the two films were concurrent with each other, he didn’t want to recast the character.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the best series of films ever made. The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King are 3 perfect movies. Peter Jackson helped realize J.R.R. Tolkien's world into something great. But in this video essay, I'm going to take a look at all the aspects that went behind making the lord of the rings trilogy. A long time ago in 1937, JRR Tolkien decided to write the Hobbit. A book for children about a short guy who goes on an adventure. Little did he know how popular his story would become, but when it did he decided to write a more mature story afterwards. This time it was a trilogy called the Lord of the rings trilogy. And little did he know how popular that would become. Throughout history as movies and tv became more popular, there were Tolkien’s grand epic. Such as this animated movie that is frankly a lot of fun to watch. But in 1995, a man named Peter Jackson sent off on an adventure to adapt this Lord of the Rings trilogy to the big screen. After years of hard work at pre production, the actual production, and post production. The Lord of the Rings trilogy began with the fellowship of the ring in 2001, and concluded with the return of the king in 2003. These films went on to become 3 of the most successful films imaginable. Not only were these films huge hits amongst casual audiences, but hardcore Tolkien fans were mostly pleased and critics themselves loved the films. Return of the king to this day is tied for the most successful movies at the Oscars, winning 11 Oscars including best picture. Almost never does it happen where a blockbuster movie wins best picture, but Lord of the Rings managed to pull it off. This trilogy managed to capture the awe and imagination of almost everyone who watched it. I remember when I was younger and these movies came out, and for years all I could think about was rewatching the movies, playing the video game adaptations of the movies, and running around with my plastic swords pretending I was Aragorn fighting a bunch of orcs. Even with all this passion for the trilogy in the 2000s, that passion has not faded all these years later. This trilogy was so popular that Amazon decided to gamble over 1 billion dollars on the most expensive show ever made in the history of TV. So what made Lord of the Rings so popular? How did a story that was originally written in the 1950s move so many people decades upon decades later. What makes these movies arguably 3 of the best movies ever made? Well let’s go back in time almost a century to the beginning, and I mean the beginning.
John Ronald Reuel Tolkein’s influence on the fantasy genre is immeasurable. He wrote The Hobbit in 1937 and went on to write his The Lord of the Rings Trilogy in the 1950s.

On August 1st, 1996, Author George RR Martin released the first book in his new fantasy series. This book was titled “A Game of Thrones.” While his new book series did gain popularity in the fantasy community, Martin never anticipated that his story would become a global phenomenon 20 years later. Watching Game of Thrones each week wasn’t like watching any show, it was an event. You had to tune in each week to check in on Jon Snow, Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and dozens of other characters. This show wasn’t just popular. Marvel is popular, but people aren’t calling the Marvel movies some of the best movies ever made. At its peak, Game of Thrones was in the conversation for the best show ever made. This was the conversation for many years. Once the show got into its later seasons like seasons 5, 6, and 7, people started to notice a decline in the quality of the series. But it wasn’t bad enough for people to declare this show past its prime. That may have been the case narratively, but each easy became more popular than the previous. Game of Thrones wasn’t like the walking dead or the office or other shows that overstayed their welcome. Entering the final season, the show was at its peak popularity. Conversations were still held as to whether or not this show was the best show ever made. And it was unlikely that the final season of the series would change that, right? Right? It took just 1 month and arguably 4 episodes to turn the conversation around Game of Thrones from being one of the best shows ever made, to it having one of the worst endings ever made. Rarely and I mean rarely are there movies or seasons of shows that are borderline universally hated. Even movies that are passionately hated by a lot of people like Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Batman v Superman have a significant fanbase. Trust me, I would know. But when it comes to the last season of Game of Thrones, the amount of disdain this season received was something I have never seen. If I polled 100 random people who have watched this show, I would bet thousands of dollars that at most, 1 person would say they kinda enjoyed the season. How did this happen? How did a show that was in the conversation for the best show ever made earn this reputation for the worst ending ever made? How did a show so popular piss off so many people? How did 2 men who were showrunners for the most popular show in the history of TV get clowned so hard by fans they are widely viewed as awful storytellers. Well, let’s start from the beginning, and I mean the beginning.
