The Golden Chronicles episodes

  • Episode 19: Fear- Friend or Foe?

In this episode of The Golden Chronicles, we're talking about fear, the things it keeps us safe from, the opportunities it keeps us from taking and the ways it shows up in our relationships.

From childhood experiences to dreams, intuition and the fears we carry into adulthood, we explore how differently we recognize, respond to and sometimes accommodate fear. Along the way, we discover that even when we understand where our fears come from, we don't always agree on what to do with them.

Is fear something we should learn to love with, or something we should learn to challenge? And how do we know when it's helping us versus holding us back?

  • Episode 18: Rest- Take It Easy

In this episode, we explore what rest means to each of us, why slowing down can feel like laziness, and how our childhood, church experiences, work, and family responsibilities shaped our relationships with it.

We also discover that the same activity can restore one person and exhaust another, and ask what it might look like for a parent and adult child to simply rest together.

Because sometimes rest is not about doing nothing. It is about being free from decisions, expectations, and the pressure to make every moment count.

  • Episode 17: Comparison- Today you are you..

When does comparison steal our joy, and when can it help us grow?

In this episode, we explore how comparison shapes the way we see our relationships, careers, and accomplishments.

We talk about measuring ourselves against lives we may not fully understand, the pressure of being “the capable one,” and how comparison can sometimes offer motivation, perspective, and opportunities to learn.

Because comparison can make us question whether we are enough, but it can also help us recognize what matters to us.

  • Episode 16: No- Period.

Why can such a small word feel so difficult to say?

In this episode, we explore our complicated relationships with “no,” from saying yes when we really want to decline to saying no because fear is keeping us from something meaningful.

We talk about boundaries, over-explaining, missed opportunities, and what happens when giving a reason turns into defending our decision.

We also examine the tension between respecting someone’s no and challenging them when we believe fear may be making the choice.

Through our own mother-daughter dynamic, we ask whether offering another perspective means we think we know better, why hearing no can feel personal, and whether “I just don’t want to” is reason enough.

Sometimes no protects us, sometimes it limits us, and sometimes saying no to one thing allows us to say yes to what matters most.

  • Episode 15: Normal- That's Not How I Do It...

What does “normal” actually mean, and who gets to decide what counts?

In this episode, we talk about where our ideas of normal come from, how they shape the way we see ourselves and others, and what happens when someone else’s normal looks completely different from our own.

We explore family dynamics, homeschooling, medication, relationships, touring, motherhood, and the choices that may not look conventional but still work for us.

We also unpack the difference between familiar and healthy, why different doesn’t automatically mean dysfunctional, and how approaching each other with curiosity instead of judgment can help us stay connected.

Because “that’s not how I do it” doesn’t always mean someone is doing it wrong.

  • Episode 14: Boundaries- House Rules

In this episode of The Golden Chronicles, we’re joined by our very first guest, therapist Justine Arel, A-LPC/MHSP, from The Refuge Center for Counseling, for a thoughtful and honest conversation about boundaries.

We talk about what boundaries are, what they are not, and why they can feel so uncomfortable in real relationships. Justine helps us unpack boundaries as “house rules,” giving us a practical way to think about what we need, how we communicate it, and how boundaries can actually help us stay connected instead of pulling us apart.

Together, we talk about time, guilt, changing roles between parents and adult children, saying no, healthy versus rigid boundaries, and why receiving someone else’s boundary with curiosity can make all the difference.

    As always, we’re learning too.

  • Episode 13: Assuming- You Know What They Say About Assuming....

In this episode of The Golden Chronicles, we’re talking about assumptions: the stories we make up when we don’t have all the information.

We get into the funny, familiar, and sometimes uncomfortable ways assumptions show up in everyday life, from text messages and tone to family dynamics, work conversations, relationships, and even the assumptions we make about ourselves.

We also talk about when assumptions are not necessarily wrong, why our brains love to fill in the blanks, and how a little curiosity can keep us from reacting to a whole story we created in our own heads.

As always, we’re not coming at this as experts. We’re just sharing what we’re learning as we try to understand each other better, check the stories we’re telling ourselves, and stay connected to the people we love.

  • Episode 12: Trivia- Wait, You Did What?!

In this summer kickoff episode of The Golden Chronicles, we’re doing something a little different: generational trivia, fun facts, memories, and a walk down memory lane.

Color TVs. Party lines. Paper maps. Text messages limits. iPods, and road trip snacks. We look at the everyday things that shaped different generations.

But because this is The Golden Chronicles, we’re not just sharing random facts. We’re talking about how the worlds we grew up in shaped the way we communicate, connect, remember, and understand each other.

It’s lighthearted, nostalgic, and full of laughs, but at the heart of it is a reminder that different experiences don’t have to mean disconnection. Sometimes they just give us something new to ask about.

  • Episode 11: Communication- What'd You Say?!

In this episode of The Golden Chronicles, we’re talking about hearing versus listening, communication styles, tone, texting, conflict, processing time, and why “I was listening” is not always the same as “I understood.”

Through real stories and plenty of laughs, we unpack what gets lost between what we mean, what we say, and what the other person actually receives.

We’re not trying to communicate perfectly. We’re learning how to understand each other better.

  • Episode 10:Expectations-What Did You Expect?

Expectations can help relationships thrive… or quietly create disappointment when they go unspoken.

In this episode, we explore how expectations are formed, how they shape the way we relate to ourselves and others, and how misunderstandings often happen when we assume our expectations are obvious or universal.

We talk about expectations in marriage, parenting, friendship, work, and family dynamics, including the difference between expecting respect and expecting understanding, why unspoken expectations can create gaps in relationships, and how communicating expectations can build clarity instead of resentment.

There are a few laughs, a few stories, and a reminder that people usually aren’t trying to let us down… they may just not know what we expect
