Cancer is awful and negatively affects everyone it touches. One group particularly affect are children whose parents have cancer. In this episode, host Catryn Becker speaks with non-profit Executive Director Alicia Kabir about her organization Kesem which offers camps to support those children. Additionally, Catryn and Alicia discuss some of the business challenges that come with running a non-profit.
About Alicia Kabir:
Alicia is Kesem’s Chief Executive Officer. She joined Kesem in 2017 as Chief Operating Officer and as a member of Kesem’s Boston Board of Directors. Prior to joining Kesem, she spent over 20 years in environmental compliance and sustainability consulting. Alicia earned her BS in Civil Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and her MS in Environmental Engineering from Tufts University. Alicia believes that every child affected by a parent’s cancer should have the opportunity to simply be a kid and be their best self. She resides outside of Boston, Massachusetts with her husband, two boys, and dog. Alicia loves to travel and enjoys outdoor activities including hiking, skiing, and road biking.

That’s 5 million children at risk of experiencing increased anxiety, emotional isolation, loss of social interest, and/or feelings of hopelessness. About Gib Stewart
Roland (Gib) Stewart grew up in apartment complexes in Portland Oregon, Mountain View California and Santa Monica. After serving in the Army he searched for years to find stable employment. In 1977 he and his then wife risked their entire savings of $10,000 and loans from friends totaling more than $18,000 to invest in real estate. He retired from state government service at age 50 and started developing dental/medical office buildings. By 2017 they had assets of $30 million and were managing assets of over $70 million. Gib is now 76 and already this year has started four new initiatives. He recently authored the book: Learn Apply and Grow Rich available on Amazon.

Dr. Passeri is an energy worker, entrepreneur, and author. She has been doing Light Body energy work for thirty years helping over 1000 clients connect with their highest selves, identify and clock disempowering narratives, and design and live the lives of their dreams. One of her specialties is as a dream coach. She believes that helping people connect with their dream space, and even become lucid dreamers, can connect people with parts of their highest self’s that is otherwise seemingly inaccessible.
As an entrepreneur, Luciana founded and is CEO of PASSERI, a slow fashion company that makes hand-made shoes and bags. Her company’s pillars stem from her personal work connecting with her highest self and navigating a difficult childhood but also from her work with clients which she claims is always a beautiful reciprocal sharing of lives. Her company’s pillars are: Be Beauty, Live Compassionately, Love Everyone, Know Peace, & Be Kind.
Giving back is important to Luciana. More than 20 years ago she started two nonprofit foundations, La Paz International and HumanKind, that are designed to support the marginalized and disenfranchised in our world. As part of her philanthropy work, Luciana led over 100 small and large groups on journeys to Thailand, Tanzania, Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, India, and parts of Europe. She believes that expanding ourselves is sometimes best achieved as we humbly travel to cultures, free ourselves from the constraints of everyday life and support us in spiritually, emotionally, and intellectual expanding.
Most recently, Dr. Passeri has authored her memoir, "God's in a Box on my Dresser: An Inquiry into the Human Capacity to Thrive" where she takes readers through her relationship with God and religion as she traverses childhood abandonment and abuse, family secrets, and an eating disorder that almost took her life. She finds the secrets to healing and thriving while living 30 days on a little island deep in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle.
