In this follow-up to episode 1, David and Paul are joined in the studio by fellow Blueprint team member Colin Stein for part 2 of their discussion of the Netflix series Adolescence.

David, Paul and Colin ask the question: what could episode 5 look like, and what's the value of continuing the story? In the series’ four-episode arc, the show moves from the alleged, and ultimately inescapably true, accusation of a terrible crime committed by a 13-year-old boy, and how it impacts him and his relationship with his father, and ultimately entire community.

Underlying the premise of where the story could have gone from there are some other questions: was Eddie Miller a good dad? What was he missing, and who are the voices serving as role models for boys like Jamie? And what can fathers today do to cultivate relationships with their sons - and daughters, partners, and mentees - and to provide an alternative voice to these potentially dark forces?

Episode 4 features David and Paul speaking with Vancouver police officer Jamie Proust about his experience addressing some of consequences choosing a career in law enforcement.

Currently seconded from the Vancouver Police Department to the Justice Institute of BC Police Academy, Jamie raised his hand when the call was put out to past attendees of Blueprint’s First Responder Resiliency Program.

“My family and I greatly benefited from my attendance at Loon Lake, and I would be happy to pay it forward in any way that I can,” Jamie told us earlier this spring.

Making an early career pivot into policing, Jamie experienced what many first responders find they cannot avoid and often struggle to reconcile—the collision of formative childhood influences, challenging experiences on the job, and the unrelenting demands of everyday life. In this episode, we learn how addressing helped him turn things around.

David Kuhl and Paul Nakhla talk to Steve Farina, a recently retired fire fighter with the City of Coquitlam, Executive Vice President with the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association, and one of the earliest supporters of Blueprint's First Responder Resiliency Program for BC's fire service. Steve talks about the team culture and the impacts of working as a fire fighter, breaking unhealthy cycles of masculinity within the profession, and his current top priorities - being there as a dad, a partner, and a mentor.
