  • #124 Kirsty Jagger | Author of Roseghetto - an extraordinary debut novel
TW: This conversation touches on themes of abuse, proverty and violence.

Today in the Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chats with the remarkable and down to earth Australian author, Kirsty Jagger.

Kirsty is a journalist by trade. In 2019, she won the inaugural Heyman Mentorship Award, established by acclaimed Australian author Kathryn Heyman for a writer from a background of social or economic disadvantage. Roseghetto takes some inspiration from growing up in the housing commission estates of Sydney’s western suburbs. This is her first novel.

Roseghetto is a stunning debut novel which follows Shayla, a young woman on a newspaper assignment who returns to the public housing estate where she grew up and finds it demolished. The locals have been evicted, their homes erased, their stories too. Standing among the rubble of Rosemeadow, Shayla is assailed by her memories of living there. The bad secret Daddy asked her to keep. Mummy rekindling a dangerous romance. Making friends with ‘the gutter kids’. Surrounded by poverty, confronted by domestic violence, Shayla found her escape in reading. Now it’s time to tell the stories of Rosemeadow, including her own.

Roseghetto is an unforgettable and moving coming-of-age story, an account of breaking the cycle of violence and poverty.

Kirsty shares her hard won wisdom of growing up in similar circumstances to the characters she has created, and finding her own way out to find a better life.

  • #122 Megan Rogers | Author - The Heart is a Star
Today in the Confessional, host Sandy Lowres chat with Megan Rogers, the Australian author of The Heart is a Star - an absorbing and gripping novel, told beautifully.

This is a powerful novel that explores the messiness and complexity of midlife, about the ways in which we navigate an intricate, complicated world; and about how we can uncover our true selves when we are forced to face the myths that make us.

"Layla Byrnes is exhausted. She's juggling a demanding job as an anaesthetist, a disintegrating marriage, her young kids, and a needy lover. And most particularly she's managing her histrionically unstable mother, who repeatedly threatens to kill herself. But this year, it's different. When her mother rings just before Christmas, she doesn't follow the usual script. Instead, she tells Layla that there's something she needs to tell her about her much-loved father. In response, Layla drops everything to rush to her childhood home on the wild west coast of Tasmania. She's determined to finally confront her mother - and find out what really happened to her father - and lay some demons to rest."

Megan shares her wisdom also. She grew up moving around, which instilled in her a respect for small-town characters and a dislike of linoleum in rental properties. She spent most of her primary school years scribbling in her mother’s 1970s herb books and then telling people they were novels she’d written and published. The Heart is a Star is an engrossing, lyrical and powerfully absorbing novel. You won't see the twists and turns coming.

You can see Megan's own heart throughout the characters.

  • #121 Marsha Gordon | Discovering the forgotten historical figure & hidden writings of Ursula Parrott
What if I told you that in 1929, a woman in NYC wrote a best seller, made a fortune during the great depression and then went on to write over 20 books, and screenplays - many of which became Hollywood films - only to tell you that no one knows her name?

Today in the Confessional, I'm thrilled to chat with Marsha Gordon, a Professor in Film Studies at North Carolina State University in the USA who stumbled across a forgotten historical figure just by chance and made it her mission to bring this story into the light.

Ursula Parrott was, by any standards, quite an extraordinary woman and thanks to Marsha's incredible research, she may finally receive the respect she so deserves. Marsha's latest book Becoming the Ex-Wife: The Unconventional Life and Forgotten Writings of Ursula Parrott (2023) is an incredible expose of a woman who in the 1920s lived her life on her own terms, writing best-selling novels, and being a sought after columnist for high-end magazine publications.

Parrott's first novel, Ex-Wife, was published anonymously in 1929. A popular sensation, it sold more than 100,000 copies in nine editions. MGM paid $20,000 for the film rights as well. Ex-Wife was subsequently adapted for film as The Divorcee (1930) starring Norma Shearer, who won an Oscar for her role. Shearer also starred in an adaptation of Strangers May Kiss, published in 1930. Her novel Next Time We Live was adapted for film as Next Time We Love in 1936.

As a writer, Parrott was most successful between 1929 and 1940. Her son estimated that she earned around $700,000 ($14.6 million in 2022 dollars) during that period of time. In December 1942, Parrott became the subject of national coverage when she was brought up on federal charges of attempting to help the jazz guitarist Michael Neely Bryan escape from the Miami Beach Army stockade, but was found innocent by the jury at her trial.

Ursula Parrott wrote about many things, including being a single mother and woman in a man's world. Yet, she was often thought of a romance novelist. She married and divorced several times. She was a genuine player in the world of both literature and Hollywood, and yet somewhere along the way, Ursula became another forgotten woman in these industries. There is no Hollywood star on the Walk of Fame, no plaque to suggest she created so many thought provoking works in her life.

I am thrilled to chat with Marsha, who's curiosity and passion for Ursula's story culminated in her incredible book. I for one am so blown away that, until Marsha's book, I had never heard of Ursula. I really hope Ursula Parrott will now be spoken about often as she paved the way for so many women to follow in her footsteps.

TW: This episode contains conversations about alcohol abuse, alcoholism

Today in the Confessional, I am honoured to be chatting with the gorgeous writer and fellow podcaster Jo Pybus. We’ll be talking about Jo’s powerful article that was published nationally this week about her experience of being raised by an alcoholic mother. Jo’s courage to share this very personal story has resonated with so many people.

Jo’s article, titled “I didn’t want to demonise my alcoholic mother in her eulogy – but I wasn’t going to lie either” was published in the @sydneymorningherald and @sundaylifeau and is a powerful read.

As many are considering giving up alcohol for Dry July Foundation Jo explores the concept of what legacy we might be leaving behind. Is our alcohol use impacting our kids and those around us?

  • #118 Bron Williams | Reconnecting women with their power!
Today in The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres is chatting to a former good girl, Bron Williams. Are you uncertain about your future? Do you have unfulfilled dreams? Then meet Bron Williams!

At 67, Bron has a lot of hard-won wisdom. She is a powerful woman dedicated to helping other women reconnect with their own power. Despite her achievements - including an honours degree, serving as a school principal, being an ordained minister, and having experience working with asylum seekers, Bron once struggled to tap into her full potential because of the expectations of family and society.

Through her own journey, which has placed her as a bias expert and keynote speaker, she has come to understand the importance of knowing one’s values and needs and being clear about them. By guiding women to understand their own drivers, needs and values Bron helps women reconnect with their own power so they can confidently negotiate their salaries and pursue leadership positions, unapologetically celebrating their achievements along the way.

  • #117 Kerri Sackville | The Secret Life of You - how a bit of alone time can change your life, your relationships and maybe the world
Have you ever wished you had more downtime or time just to think and reflect? Or does the thought of spending time alone feel indulgent or implausible? Maybe the thought of spending time alone seems like a scary concept.

Today in The Good Girl Confessional we welcome back Sydney-based Author and Columnist Kerri Sackville who has explored the concept of spending time alone and the huge benefits it can bring to your life. In her powerful new book The Secret Life of You: How a bit of alone time can change your life, your relationships and maybe the world, Kerri unpacks the concept of alone time and we chat about society's attitude towards solitude.

Kerri's new book is life changing! When Kerri decided to stop filling every idle moment with distractions and learn to be comfortable with her own thoughts, her quality of life began to soar. She started to see that her productivity and creativity increased and she realised her connection with others became deeper. In a world of smart phones, social media, and endless streaming options, along with the demands of work, family and friends, spending time on your own can feel impossible. Kerri explores the roadblocks to unplugging and contemplates aloneness versus loneliness.

  • #115 Alison Brahe-Daddo | Author & Podcaster | From Dolly Cover Girl to Menopause Advocacy
Today in The Good Girl Confessional, host Sandy Lowres is chatting with Ali Brahe-Daddo who exploded onto the Australian modelling scene at the age of 16 and became the cover girl of Dolly Magazine. Over the years Ali's life would take her in many different directions including moving to Hollywood with her husband of 30 years, motherhood, (she has 3 children), fitness and teaching.

Her first book, QUEEN MENOPAUSE – a friendly, frank, compassionate and comprehensive companion for any woman experiencing menopause – was published in 2022 by Allen & Unwin. She also Co-hosts with her husband, actor Cameron Daddo, on their hit podcast “Separate Bathrooms”. Interviewing some of the most interesting couples in Australia, they take a look behind the closed doors of their relationships.

With her gorgeous smile and all-Australian beach body, she lit up the covers of Australia’s top fashion and pop magazines. Cleo, Dolly and Cosmopolitan, kept her face front and centre with fashion spreads and stories. It was rare that she was not on the cover every month of one of these publications, well into the 90’s. Now Alison's daughter has just signed to a modelling agency, in her 20's.

Alison talks opening and honestly today about her perimenopause journey, and why sharing this journey has been so important in helping other women to navigate perimanopause. She is also open about attending therapy and how a 30 year marriage requires genuine work!

    This is a brilliant conversation!
