Maverick City Music is a contemporary Worship Music collective and record label founded by Tony Brown and Jonathan Jay originating from Atlanta.

On May 20, 2022, Maverick City Music Kirk Franklin announced that they would release a collective album titled Kingdom Book One on June 17, 2022.

From Kingdom Book One Deluxe Album, there’s a new single titled “The Name” Out Now. It’s a beautiful gospel song. The song makes me think of Genesis 4:26. And to Seth, to him also there was born a son, and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the Lord.

    (Sing)

The song “The Name” is my favorite from the album. It has 9 songs on the album altogether. So look for Kingdom Book One Deluxe Album & watch for the new video for the single “The Name”.

    Song: From The Rising
    Song by: Patrick Lundy

    Drummer: Gail Nobles
    Vocals by: Gail Nobles

Patrick Lundy gospel musician and founder/director of Patrick Lundy and The Ministers of Music, based out of Washington, D.C. Lundy was born in March 1967 in Thomasville, Georgia, the son of Charlie B. Lundy and Mary Lundy. He is a graduate of Howard University, where he received his bachelor's degree in music business.

Lundy formed The Ministers of Music in November 1994 at Ebenezer AME Church located in Fort Washington, Maryland. He started his recording music career in 1995, with the release of We Sing the Power.

Today I’m thinking of Lundy’s song from The Rising from his album By Faith released in 2017.

He sings: From the rising of the sun
Until the going down of the same …
    You’re worthy God,
    You’re worthy of our praise.
All the glory, and all the honor, all
    the praise to your name.”

I love how Lundy directs the choir to stomp their feet and mentions the wooden church. It puts you in the mood to praise the Lord. You can also hear the clapping of the hands from the choir as they sing.

You can hear Patrick Lundy’s song on Spotify titled “From the Rising”. You’re listening to a show about The Gospel Greats. I’m your host, Gail Nobles. Have a blessed weekend and thank you for listening.

    Song: A Poor Wayfaring Stranger

Hi! I’m Gail Nobles, and you’re listening to Rare Gospel from the Bottom of the Barrel. Searching way down deep for those gospel tunes. A Poor Wayfaring stranger is a 1976 song by a gospel artist named Cliff Gober. You can hear horns, drums, & strings in his song. When you dig up a song like this one, you might not understand what they mean by Gospel-Funk. Maybe they call it that because of the sound of music. I hear the gospel, but I don’t hear funk. I hear a strong gospel message in Cliff’s song, and that’s what is important.

I also hear deep soul when I play the song. You can hear Cliff’s song on Spotify. Cliff’s song is found on the record label Calvary Records.

A poor wayfaring stranger is a stranger traveling. The song reminds me of the scriptures and what the Bible said in Hebrews11:13 about those that died in faith and how they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. Christian songwriters refer to the idea that this life, and this earth is not our real home. That we are strangers on the earth just traveling through. The real home is heaven with the Lord. You can hear the same message in Cliff Gober’s song that goes something like this. ..

  • The Golden Gate Quartet 4:6:22 9.54PM
    Song: God Told Nicodemus
Song by: The Golden Gate Quartet

    Podcast vocals (intro): Gail Nobles

Hi! I’m Gail Nobles and you’re listening to The Gospel Greats. Today’s topic: The Golden Gate Quartet.

The Golden Gate Quartet (a.k.a. The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is a vocal gospel group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active.

The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. According to the group's website, the original members were Willie Johnson (baritone 1980), William Langford (tenor; d. 1970), Henry Owens (second tenor 1970) and Orlandus Wilson (bass; 1917–1998); other sources state that Langford and Wilson replaced earlier members Robert "Peg" Ford and A.C. "Eddie" Griffin in 1935.

From 1935, the group sang in churches and on local radio, gaining a regular spot on radio station WIS in Columbia, South Carolina in 1936.[ They began as a traditional jubilee quartet, combining the clever arrangements associated with barbershop quartets with rhythms borrowed from the blues and jazz like scat singing. They developed a broad repertoire of styles – from Owens' mournful, understated approach in songs such as "Anyhow" or "Hush, Somebody's Calling My Name", to the group's highly syncopated arrangements in "Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego". Like The Mills Brothers in popular music, they would often include vocal special effects in their songs, imitating train sounds in songs such as "Golden Gate Gospel Train". Langford often sang lead, using his ability to range from baritone to falsetto, while Johnson narrated. Wilson’s bass served as the anchor for the group and Owens harmonized with Langford and Johnson.

In 1940 the group signed a new contract with Columbia Record’s Okeh label and shortened their name to Golden Gate Quartet.

The quartet lost their pre-eminent position in gospel music after the war, when they faced competition from the newer hard gospel quartets.

The Golden Gates revived their career in 1955, however, when they toured Europe for the first time where they became widely popular.

The group made their first tour of Africa in 1962, and during the early 1960s gradually expanded their accompanying band to Incorporate guitar, piano, bass, and drums.

The Golden Gates sang a lot of songs. One of the songs that I like to hear the group sing is God Told Nicodemus.

She’s from Cumberland, New Jersey. She has a great new single out titled, Don’t Give Up. Danielle’s song and voice gives great encouragement because there are people giving up on God. Don’t Give Up is written by Danielle and produced by Jerald L. Bryant. The arrangement is by Corey Ling. You can hear the song “Don’t Give Up” on Spotify.

Etta James was a blues singer, but I must say she could do it all. She also could sing the Gospel. She had great gospel hits like:
Amen/ This Little Light of Mine
    Down by the Riverside
We’ll Fly You to the Promised Land
Walk All Over God’s Heaven …
    Just to name a few.

Etta was more than just a blues singer. I don’t see much information about her singing gospel. It is said that James was once considered one of the most overlooked blues and R&B musicians in the music history of the United States. In my opinion, I think James was overlooked for gospel too because like I said, she could do it all, and she was great in every genre.

In order for Etta James to sing gospel the way that she did, she must have had heaven in her heart. She had the right kind of voice for gospel. Etta could shout. (Singing) I consider Etta James a great gospel singer. If she had gospel hits, she must have helped gospel get some attention. I believe the spirit of the Lord was upon Etta when she sang the gospel. Not everybody can sing gospel, but Etta James could though she sang the blues. She had a voice. God gave it to her. I’m glad that Etta James left us some great gospel music.

Etta James had a birthday this month on Jan. 25. She was born 1938. She left us Jan. 20, 2012.

    Song: The Sound of Christmas
    Song by: The Fantastic Violinaires

    Keyboard player: Gail Nobles
    Podcast vocals: Gail Nobles

The Violinaires were a gospel group founded in 1952 in Detroit Michigan. One early member was Wilson Pickett who was with the group between 1955-1959. Following the contemporary trend of groups that switched their style to the more profitable R&B, he left to join the Falcons. Between 1965 and 2001, the Violinaires were led by Robert Blair after his death , you may have seen a variety of names. I’ve seen the name the Fantastic Violinaires in the 80’s.

I love their Christmas song, The Sound of Christmas. I play their song and the Temptations song Silent Night back to back from a playlist. I think they are the greatest Christmas songs. The Violinaires Christmas song The Sound of Christmas comes from Malaco Records album Gospel at Christmas Time.

  • Rosetta Tharpe - This Wicked Race 11:1:21 7.20 PM

    Vocals by: Gail Nobles

Song: My Lord’s Gonna Move This Wicked Race
    Song by: Sister Rosetta Tharpe

Today’s topic is traditional. Sister Rosetta Tharpe. My Lord’s Gonna Move This Wicked Race.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a guitarist, singer, songwriter, and recording artist. I like the way she played the guitar. I seen her on some old videos. She attained popularity in the 1930’s and 1940’’s with her gospel recordings characterized by a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics & electric guitar that was extremely important to the origins of rock & roll. She was the first great recording star of gospel musicians to appeal to rhythm and blues and rock and roll audiences.

Rosetta Tharpe recorded a song titled, My Lord’s Gonna Move This Wicked Race. She said he’s gonna raise up a nation that shall obey. And do you know what? I see more and more people becoming Christians.

The lyrics said: “ Marvel that man if you want to be wise.” That man is Jesus.

Sister Rosetta said just believe in Jesus and be baptized. Nicodemus, he desired to know how can a man be born when he’s old. God called on-a Moses on the mountaintop.

    (Lord, Lord)

And he stomped his name in Moses’ Heart.

(Gonna raise up a nation that shall obey).

    (Intro)

Dorothy Norwood is another great gospel singer and songwriter. She began touring with her family at the age of eight., and 1956, began singing with Mahalia Jackson. In the early 1960’s she was a member of the Caravans, and in 1964, she went solo recording her first album.

Lord Bring Me Down From This Mountain is a single from Dorothy’s 1976 album. There’s a lot of great songs on that album, and Lord Bring Me Down is my favorite.

Gospel music then is no ways like Gospel music today. In the beginning, it had its own style of music. Now many styles are added. In the old days, Gospel music had its own sound, and it was played differently. And now, it sounds like other Genres. Gospel rap, gospel rock, and so on. The old style hasn’t always been easy for me to sing and play like I’ve always wanted to. There’s something about it. And whenever it was played, it had to be done right. You had to sing it right. The old days were strict.

Getting back to Dorothy Norwood, she has been singing for a long time. She’s one of the best. She’s someone you can learn from.

Wynona Carr was a gospel, R&B, and rock and roll singer and songwriter. She recorded as Sister Wynona Carr when performing gospel material.

She was born in Cleveland, Ohio where she started out as a gospel singer, forming her. Own five-piece group The Carr Singers around 1945 and touring the Cleveland/Detroit area.

Not having too much success on the charts (except for “The Ball Game” song in 1952), which became one of Specialty label’s best selling gospel records which was featured in the movie 42), Carr grew increasingly unhappy with the straight gospel direction of her career and pleaded to record pops, jumps, ballads, and semi-blues. Overall the change from spiritual to secular music didn’t help Carr much in terms of sales or recognition.

I don’t understand it. Wynona had a way with words in her songs. I love her gospel songs. Carr wrote things in her songs that explains my feelings and words I sometimes don’t know how to express. Each Day was one of those songs. Get a little nearer each day to the Lord. It’s a true song for me. When Carr sung the gospel, her lyrics were not hard to figure out. You knew she was singing about the Lord.

I don’t understand what it was about Wynona’s day and time that she didn’t make it in the gospel. Maybe she should have kept on trying the gospel. Wynona had the songwriting talent and great voice for gospel. Maybe she was before her time or something, and it wasn’t intended for her to make it. Maybe the world wasn’t ready for her.

According to history, she tried to bridge the gap between Gospel and Blues, but when she eventually got the chance to do it, it all seemed to be working. Then her health declined.

God blessed Wynona to record the songs that she wrote. There was a blessing in it. Now, here I am today listening to those gospel songs, and her songs need to be heard today. Somebody’s listening, and somebody is needing to hear her words and the gospel music that she made.

I’m Gail Nobles, and you’re listening to a show about the Gospel Greats. Today’s topic is Wynona Carr.
