Good evening! I'm Gail Nobles. And today's topic is The Swan Silvertones. They recorded a song titled, "He's Sweet, I Know", and it goes something like this.....

    (Singing Chorus)
    He's Sweet I Know
    He's Sweet I know
    Dark Clouds May Rise
    Strong Winds May Blow

    I'll tell the world
    Wherever I go
    I found a savior
    He's sweet I know

"He's Sweet, I Know" recorded by the Swan Silvertones. That was only part of the song. The chorus. To hear the original, look for The Swan Silvertones at Spotify.com.

They were a gospel group that first achieved popularity in the 1940's and the 1950's under the leadership of Claude Jeter. Jeter formed the group in 1938 as the "Four Harmony Kings" while he was working as a coal miner in West Virginia. After moving to Knoxville, Tennessee and obtaining their own radio show, the group changed it's name to the "Silvertone Singers" in order to avoid confusion with another ensemble known as the "Four Kings of Harmony". They added the same name Swan shortly thereafter, since Swan Bakeries sponsored their show; their wide exposure through radio brought them a contract with King Records.

Let's move into the sound of gospel music history. Let's move into the present now.

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is a Negro Spiritual recorded by the group called "The Southern Four" in Dec. of 1921. The song was composed around 1860 by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in Southern Oklahoma. Willis was inspired by The Red River, which reminded him of the Jordan River and the Prophet Elijah ascending to heaven in a chariot. The lyrics symbolically referred to the Underground Railroad. The Swanee Quintet is a gospel group that brought a great song to the gospel sound.

Chorus: Starting all over again is gonna be rough and tough. So rough. We gonna make it.
Verse: In my life, I know I done wrong every since I stayed away from home.
Jesus gave me another chance. Now, I can tell the world I've been born again......

Announcer: "Starting All Over Again" was a 1972 song performed by Mel & Tim from the Stax Record Label. The songwriter was Phillip Mitchell. The song was also made a gospel song and was performed by the gospel group, Swanee Quintet. To some of you, it may be just a love song about two people trying to make it in a relationship. Some of you may like it as a gospel song because of your relationship with God. Mel & Tim said in the lyrics that they pray tat the Lord would help them make it. Well, God is our all in all no matter what or who.

Most of the time we categorize a song, but when something spiritual hits you on the inside, you might not feel a song belongs in a particular category. You may just follow your spiritual feeling. There are songs that could fit in more than one category and Mel & Tim's "Starting all over again is one of them. To me, it's spiritual as R&B and Gospel. And we do need God's help for all relationships.
