At least once each year the Grainery focuses on our missions and justice calling. Clare reminds us that God’s blessings are like a sumptuous meal which we share together at a beautifully set table. Jesus taught a link between God’s blessings at his table, with his desire for justice for all people in all nations.

In God’s kingdom the communion table exemplifies this truth as it is a table where rich and poor, slave and free, strong and weak can sit and participate equally together. This fellowship overturns the world’s values by a subversive, grace based hospitality.

Clare encourages us to overturn injustice with an indiscriminate fellowship of kindness and hospitable sharing of resources, especially towards the impoverished and marginalised.

Beginning with the story of the life of Elijah, particularly God’s meeting with him as a still small voice and progressing through stories where God speaks in fire and thunder, Theo challenges us to consider how God speaks to us. Stories of radical conversions and of humble Godly men in history, provide a framework for us considering what a life which honours God might look like.

At the deepest level of your life, what do you want? Sue suggests that below our ambitions, goals, and desires lies something more profound. Paul the Apostle says “I want to know Christ...”. There is a longing in the human heart to know God personally. This is to truly “know”. The deepest knowledge is relational prior to being experiential. Out of knowing Jesus in our innermost place of intimacy comes the fullness of joy, but also an experience of suffering which is very freeing, which overcomes self-blame and cynicism.

Do you believe that God wants to give the very best of life to you? Sue explains how suffering is a part of the path to healthy wanting, true knowing, and joyful living.

In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul the Apostle speaks of resurrection and being “saved”.

Human beings need “saving” or “rescuing”. We yearn for fulfillment and “good” life but know that we fall far short of what it takes to make these things a reality. Sue explains how Jesus is the answer. Only he can bring heaven to earth right now, and his death and resurrection are the keys to this process.

Victory over sin and death is at the core of our rescue by God. Sue encourages us to embrace a whole new world-view and a new, rescued way of living. We do this by dying to our old self and letting God freely make us into a new person, a resurrected person l, who thinks, speaks and lives differently.

Let’s learn to be resurrection people, playing our own specific part in fulfilling God’s plan to bring heaven to earth.

Good Friday Meditation by The Grainery Church

Are you an optimist or a realist/pessimist? Both can be healthy or unhealthy depending on the amount of trust in God displayed.

The final instalment in the story of Joseph confirms that God can bring incredible good out what is essentially bad. But this is maximised for us if we trust Him. We need to be honest about the pain of difficult circumstances and grieve in the pain in our life, but also to keep up our hope in God, trusting Him and praising Him as an act of obedience. As children of God we have His favour, so trust begins in his adoption of us. Our trust is a response to His love and fatherhood.

What might it look like for you to become like a child before God? Ryan challenges us with that question and encourages us to press into this even in the loud fearful shouting of a world in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic.
