Welcome to the seventh and final episode of our podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 8: Sabbath and Chapter 9: Rule of Life. This is our second podcast book club series -- the first was on Breaking Free from Body Shame by Jess Connolly and aired on Kylie's ImmaEatThat Podcast. We landed on Sacred Rhythms for our next book because as we were talking about the importance of renaming our bodies as good and making peace with food and body image in our last book club, we kept coming back to this idea of slowing down and finding space to be with God.
In this episode, we talk about:
If we do not allow for a rhythm of rest in our overly busy lives, illness becomes our Sabbath – our accidents created Sabbath for us
How we long for rest, for sabbath, for joy, for delight
The idea that sabbath is more than just a day’s rest - it is a way of orienting one’s life around a pattern of working six days and then resting on the seventh
The importance of honoring the limitations of our humanness through sabbath
Components of sabbath -- what to include/exclude
What a rule of life is, which is simply a pattern of attitudes, behaviors and practices that are regular and routine and are intended to produce a certain quality of life and character
How a rule of life seeks to answer the question: "How do I want to live so I can be who I want to be?"
Practical examples of where Kylie and I are in developing our own rules of life
And more!Thank you to all who have listened to the entire series -- we highly recommend listening from the beginning so you can get a full picture of these rhythms and of course reading the book for yourself :-)
