Welcome to the first episode of our new podcast book club series on Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton. I'm joined by Kylie Mitchell, MPH, RD of ImmaEatThat to discuss Chapter 1: Longing for More. This is our second podcast book club series -- the first was on Breaking Free from Body Shame by Jess Connolly and aired on Kylie's ImmaEatThat Podcast. We landed on Sacred Rhythms for our next book because as we were talking about the importance of renaming our bodies as good and making peace with food and body image in our last book club, we kept coming back to this idea of slowing down and finding space to be with God. We're excited to talk through this book with you.
In this episode, we talk about:
Acknowledge our longing for more ("there has to be more to the Christian life than this")
Importance of being honest with self and God (Jesus asks, "what do you want me to do for you?")
Discussing the common fear that our longings won’t take us somewhere good
How our desire for healing and transformation is often met with self-help messages that leave us briefly inspired but still burdened by the pressure of trying to fix ourselves
The personal moments when we realized we had a longing only God could satisfy
Acknowledging that we can't fix ourselves, but we can make ourselves open and available to God
Making the choice to reorder life for spiritual seeking
And more!Join the Gratefully Nourished Facebook Community for support and encouragement. But also - we firmly believe in the importance of community in real life, so we highly encourage you to find people in your local community to gather with to discuss this book and enjoy life together.
