In January of 1897, a young bride named Zona Heaster Shue was found dead at the bottom of a staircase in rural West Virginia. The doctor ruled it a natural death. The case was closed.

But her mother refused to accept that answer.

Weeks later, Mary Jane Heaster claimed her daughter appeared to her and revealed how she really died. What followed was the exhumation of Zona’s body, a shocking autopsy, and a murder trial that would become one of the most unusual in American history.
