What an exciting show this week. We attended the Mid-Atlantic Grid League’s (MAGL) inaugural event!
The MAGL held it’s first ever GRID competition at their Northern Virginia venue located at Impavidus Gym. What was REALLY cool about this event is that it was comprised of “recreational” level athletes.
The MAGL has two separate divisions, a semi-pro and a recreational level. They took the opportunity to expose the sport of GRID to a level of athlete we really haven’t seen yet in GRID competitions. This tournament was open to teams made up of everyday athletes from a gym. The results were everything BUT average or everyday. With a packed house of spectators, athletes, referees and volunteers, the MAGL put on an awesome event.
We had Janice McLean, Director of the MAGL, as a guest host to talk to participants in the tournament and hear about their first experience with GRID. Stay tuned to their website for more info on the upcoming semi-pro competitions scheduled for April and June.
We lead off the show giving some thoughts and analysis of the recent NPGL announcement of the 2016 season. Don’t miss it!

This week we sit down with Garrett Smith, Head Coach of the Baltimore Anthem, at his training facility in Crofton CrossFit located just outside Baltimore, Maryland.
Coach Smith and the Anthem had a rough introduction to the NPGL last season. He tells us what was like to bring a brand new franchise into the second season of GRID.
Make sure you go back and check out Episode #5 where we first interviewed Coach Smith about his plans for the team. He talks in this episode about lessons learned and what the plans are going forward.
We expect to see good things from the Anthem in the 2016 season and Conan has gone on the record to say he thinks they’ll make it to the playoffs.
We also catch up on the Maryland Knights, the amateur GRID team owned and operated by Garrett. The team began in the SAGL and has now moved to the MAGL. Look to see the Knights competing in the April 17-18 amateur GRID competition held by the MAGL at Impavidus Gym in Northern Virginia.
Our 50th episode!
Ruby Wiswall, Co-Owner/Operator of the Miami Surge, joins us on this week’s episode. We caught up with her in Philly, PA, which is the area she and her brother Mather, GM of the Surge, hail from. We’ve had them both on the show before on Episode #17, make sure to check that one out too.
Micah Macbeth of CrossFit 215 was kind enough to let us crash his box for the afternoon. If you are ever in Philly, then make sure to stop in. Micah also happens to be GM of the Philly Bulldogs, an amateur GRID team in the Mid-Atlantic Grid League (MAGL).
Ruby took us on a journey from owning a Philly area functional fitness competition league to running a professional GRID team. We also got into some of the exciting details of the Florida GRID league and it’s plan to spread the #GospelOfGrid.
We got word that the NPGL will be announcing a lot of information about the 2016 season…VERY soon. So make sure you are following them on social media, checking-in on their website…or you could just get it ALL from their new app.
Lot’s of great stuff packed into one show. Check it out, share it with your friends and we’ll see you soon!

This week Conan and Tyler check in with Ian Berger and Andrea Ager of the New York Rhinos. The two were taking a break from training at CrossFit Dynamix in Astoria, New York. They are both part of the “super” Team Dynamix. Check out Episode 47 if you missed it where we talked about the team as a whole and their quest to win the CF Games.
Ian Berger, General Manager and first season Coach, of the New York Rhinos joins us in the first half to talk about last season and what’s planned for the 2016 season. Andrea the “Ager Bomb” herself joins in during the second half of the show to catch us up on what she’s been doing since we last visited her (Episode 26), why she moved all the way from Denver to New York, and what she thinks about being on a team and training full-time with them.

Conan and Tyler bounced up to Boston in the GridCast suburban (our version of a private jet) to meet up with Josh Plosker of the Boston Iron and Mel McManus of the North East Grid League (NEGL). In the first half of the show we talk to Coach Plosker about last season with the NPGL, how it feels to be chosen as 2015 NPGL Coach of the Year, and what their plans are this year.
In the second half of the show Commissioner of the NEGL, Mel McManus, joins us to talk about the season-opener and what to expect this year from the premier amateur grid league in the North East.

The GridCast is back!
We hope everyone is having a great New Year. We took a little break for the holidays; spent some much needed time with family and friends. Last year was a great year for the GridCast and for the sport of GRID.
We asked, you spoke, and we listened. You told us the shows were getting a bit long because of the 4 Quadrant format and that you REALLY liked the interviews we did in Quadrant 3. So…this year (at least for a while) we are going to focus on getting the guests you want to hear from and letting you get right into the interviews. Give is feedback and let us know how we are doing!
This week we have the head coach of the 2-time NPGL Championship team DC Brawlers; Justin Cotler.
We got a chance to visit him at his gym outside of New York City, CrossFit Dynamix. He recently made a big announcement involving another sport, the CrossFit Games. We talk to him about that and of course review last season and what he has planned for the 2016 season.
We are back on our weekly schedule and are really looking forward to bringing you “All Things Grid” this year!
Happy freaking anniversary of the GridCast!! Conan and Danny with some comments from Tyler, recap one helluva year. Not only did we interview 60+ amazing athletes, coaches, and personalities, we had some epic trips that we'll never forget.
As the GridCast we visited Columbia SC twice, Boston, New York, San Jose, Anaheim, Columbus, and Los Angeles. Each trip produced memories and stories that make us realize this is the best damn job we've ever had in our lives.
We could not have reached over 1.7 million listeners from over 95 countries around the world without the love and support of all of our faithful listeners and viewers. We can't thank you enough for making this past year the best year of our lives. To show you our appreciation we pulled back the curtain and shared details of behind the scenes and often times was extremely embarrassing to share.
Not only did we have some hilarious stories but we also met many athletes who were destined to be pros later that year. For instance, we met and interviewed Alyssa Ritchey and Mattie Rasnake of the DC Brawlers, Nich Bloch from the NY Rhinos, Adam Cantrell of the SF Fire, Vincent Lipsey of the Baltimore Anthem, Tayler Drescher of the LA Reign, Coulture Turchin of the Boston Iron, and many more, all before they were ever signed by a team.
From attending the NPGL draft in the draft room itself, to singing the national anthem at matches and the playoffs, pro days around the country, and finishing up at the championships in Anaheim, it's been one insane year and one we'll always hold near and dear to our hearts. Thank you again for all of your support and we hope you enjoy watching this episode, probably our favorite episode we've done to date.
Until next time, clean up your jerks and snatches, drink your beer in batches, and always dominate your grid matches.
While Conan is sipping on Mai Tai's in the Dominican Republic, Tyler and Danny pick up where he left off. We needed a camera person for the show since Tyler wanted to have his moment to shine. So, we were able to find a local professionally trained actress to hold the camera and give us a few lines…so Rachael Boardman was able to make her vocal cameo on our show. We are so grateful she was able to help us out on such short notice.
Some quick news, the Mid Atlantic Grid League will be starting their recreational season in January 2016. So, if you are in the Northern VA area or DC and you want to see what GRID is all about, form a team together and head over to themagl.com and check back for updates on when the registration opens up.
The Southern Amateur Grid League made their announcement that early 2016 will be the beginning of their season and the Northeastern Grid League will be starting their season on January 10th.
On the show we welcome Alison Scuds from your Baltimore Anthem. After an extremely successful career as a world cheerleading competitor, Alison found CrossFit while watching Wadapalooza in Florida. Alison has already reached very successful levels in the functional fitness community with limited training, but now that she has finished her schooling, Alison is dedicating her entire life around functional fitness and intends on not only going to the CrossFit Games in Carson California, she plans on winning the whole damn thing.
We really look forward to seeing what she can do next year out on the GRID and the rest of her functional fitness career.

This week on the GridCast we got to sit down and talk with Ken Battiston from the back to back NPGL champs the DC Brawlers. He told us how its been a little tricky getting back to a full training schedule since the season ended, especially after opening his own affiliate Crossfit Skyfall. I'm sure all the listeners that own their own gym know all to well that its all about prioritizing time even if that means not getting to do all the workouts you'd like, but from what we've seen online he is doing a pretty good job.
We got to know Ken better when they came to our gym to train for a match and realized how nice of a guy he is and can't wait to see him in some competitions coming up and next years season.

This week on the GridCast we talk to Joshua Arcona and Luke Espe from the Baltimore Anthem. They discuss what they will be focusing on the offseason to prepare for Grid speed, how to last longer in the matches, and they help amateur athletes with what they can do to prepare for the pro days early next year.
Move Fast Lift Heavy (MFLH) is throwing an invitational in Long Island on December 5th. A ton of GRID athletes will be in attendance and it's going to be off the hook!
