One of the noticeable traits, and one of the symptoms of ADHD that I find stigmatized is our impulsivity. Our propensity to act without fully taking the time to consider the consequences. I also find that it is one of the biggest things that is stigmatized besides hyperactivity. The thing is that it is something that I know for many people with ADHD isn’t our fault. It is our brains. To be more specific our executive functioning is causing the issue. There are things we can do to lessen it, but it still follows us like a stray that wants to be fed forever. On this episode, I wanted to understand it from another perspective

So I talked to my daughter. My daughter has ADHD like me, in fact, you could call her a mini-me, and I decided to get an understanding of it through her. I’m not sure if it makes it clearer, but it was interesting to get her perspective. I have ADHD, did I mention that?

Hello divergent brains, and welcome back to the Hamster Wheel Radio. I have ADHD, and it you are like me then many of you get dysregulated, overreact due to anxiety, being in fight or flight and not feeling safe. How our brains process things makes it difficult to maintain a base line. It hard, and the impact is just as stressful. The good news is that there are things that can be done to help settle you and make you feel safe. Today I will be discussing breath work. It is a practice that has done wonders for me, even though I don’t always want to admit it. The breath is the thing that keeps your engine from redlining. Enough oxygen, fuel for the body and you can prevent blowout. If you can go “sign” instead of “ahhh fuck!” then you will feel much better. Did I mention I have ADHD?

Have you ever noticed, if you have ADHD, how hyper-vigilant you can be? I have ADHD, and I don’t know if I mentioned that. Have you ever noticed how you can be quick to anger, defensive, or prone to procrastinate due to overstimulation or the size of the task in front of you? Feel like you can’t rest when you are resting? Well, that could be a sign that you are in survival mode/fight or flight. The one problem is that due to social and environmental conditioning, many of us with ADHD don’t even realize that we are in fight or flight. It is something that almost feels conditioned for us to do. What I mean is that it is something that almost seems like it is built into our psyche. If you relate to this then this is an episode for you. I am trying to learn how to regulate my nervous system so that I don’t feel like I am constantly getting ready to fight a bear. 

I have ADHD. Don’t know if I mentioned that.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve got an internal monologue going on in my head. I think we all do.  And we all get those negative intrusive thoughts, or stories, that aren’t in our control; but there is something distinctively different in neurodivergent brains.  Our Default Mode System, which is the system in the brain that is in charge of wakeful rest mode, has a very negative voice in the brains of many people with ADHD. It is the voice that tells us we suck, are too much but not enough, and can’t do it. It is very convincing and exhausting because it makes rest time a time for rumination. It is something, that for us with spicy brains, is a saboteur of our self-confidence. The bad news is that it is a cult leader convincing. The good news is that, once you are aware, you can change it. Did I mention that I have ADHD? Well, I do.

If you have ADHD then you probably get frustrated very easily. Very frustrated very easily.  So that means there will be times when you are overwhelmed or overstimulated while trying to complete a task, and the result could be turmoil. If you have to wait in line at the store, or someone doesn’t get to the point of their story quickly enough then it can turn that minor inconvenience into a all hands on deck ready the nuclear launch codes drill; one that could quickly result in emotional annihilation.  If that is the case then you are dealing with frustration intolerance, an ADHD symptom that is rarely talked about. The good news is that it can be explained, it’s our brains, and I’ll talk about it in this episode. I have ADHD, did I mention that?

Mr. Toad was my first hero. Confused? Let me explain. Fictional characters are more than entertaining; they are a reflection of us. They are a mirror of society, its culture, and the individuals who comprise it. Whether you're LGBTQ, a minority, or someone with a disability or just struggling with life, the fact that we can see those traits and relate means we matter and resonate. For me, at least, having those fictional characters has helped me feel like l am not alone. As a kid, I knew I had ADHD but no one told me how my brain worked, I just knew the symptoms. When I saw characters like Mr. Toad from The Wind in the Willows, who was just like me, that meant that I wasn't the only weird one out there. I wasn't alone. That matters.
