Step into the exciting world of international camp adventures as we sit down with Bethany Wright, the author behind the camp blog Britinthesix, who shares her incredible experience working at Camp Walden in Canada.
Originally hailing from England, Bethany discovered Camp Walden through an agency specializing in international camp placements. At just 20 years old, she embarked on an overseas journey that would span 9 memorable summers at Camp Walden. Inspired by her wealth of knowledge and experience in applying and working at camps abroad, Bethany created her blog, Britinthesix, with the goal of alleviating the stress faced by international camp counselors and offering valuable insights to newcomers in the camp world.
Bethany vividly recalls the immediate culture shock she experienced upon arriving at camp, as summer camps are not a common concept in England. Living among counselors who had been part of Camp Walden for years, rather than fellow international counselors, added an additional layer to the cultural adjustment. However, despite the initial shock, Bethany quickly fell in love with Camp Walden, recognizing it as her true calling. Among her treasured memories is the burning of the W on the final night of camp. As the entire camp walks down the amphitheater, singing songs, a torch ignites the W, creating a truly special moment that encapsulates the spirit of togetherness, particularly on the camp's last night.
Bethany's foremost advice for aspiring counselors is to wholeheartedly embrace the experience, diving in with both feet, in order to fully immerse themselves in all that camp has to offer.
