Cultural competence is defined as the ability of providers to understand and integrate various factors related to a patient into the delivery and structure of care provided. In this episode, we will review some of the common strategies to improve provider-patient interactions, effective communication strategies, models for effective cross-cultural communication, and conversation tips for you to use when you are providing care to individuals. When using health promotion tools such as the health belief model, you want to incorporate culture-specific attitudes and values into these tools.

One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to start off your clinical career learning proper ergonomics and patient/operator positioning. There are specific positions that clinicians need to consider when working in the clinical setting to maintain good ergonomics while providing patient care. Having foundational skills of proper operator and patient positioning ensures the clinician that they will be able to provide care in a way that meets the needs of the patient and the clinician.
