In this episode we dive a bit deeper to distinguish between different types of lesions and treatment considerations for care. It is important to document findings, have a plan, and closely monitor lesions that you see. Follow up with patients on treatment recommendations related to a diagnosis.

Coronal polishing has been seen as the core of the prophylaxis by most of the population for decades. Those of us in the field are aware of this misconception. As providers driven to practice following the evidence, I have asked myself many times. Why are we still polishing? In this episode I will share my journey on coronal polishing as well as the struggle to increase awareness and understanding of the reasons why we shouldn’t polish our patients teeth. Airflow technology has provided us with a safe and effective alternative to polishing that makes sense to both clinicians and patients. We have finally found the answer we were looking for all this time. It’s time to lay down that hand piece and get moving on airflow.

The Christmas break can seem too short, and full of many things that keep us from actually resting and recovering from the rigors of the fall semester. In this episode, we will review some of the main strategies that will help you stay focused on your plan for a successful start to the spring semester. Sometimes it is good to be reminded of why we are doing this thing called dental hygiene school. Stay focused on your end goal.  We can sometimes lose motivation and drive once the "honeymoon" phase of dental hygiene school ends. Remember how excited you were when you received your letter of acceptance into the program? Once the semester begins and you start feeling the side effects of school rigors, the energy and excitement can fade. Fatigue, stress, and demands can take over your focus. You don't want to let things drag you down to a point where you lose site of your reason for wanting to begin this journey in the first place.  Take some time to recenter yourself and get back into the game. Focus your thoughts on your "WHY" to keep you motivated and committed to the demands and rigors of the program. You can do this - You will do this!

Our patients need medical-dental integration for them to receive comprehensive care for the treatment of both diabetes and periodontal disease. It is up to us as healthcare providers to first understand the connection between periodontal disease and glycemic index. We are responsible for collaborating with medical professionals to meet the specific needs of our patients.
