Which is why we love events like the Harlem Makers Collective Artisan Christmas Sale 2018 in Harlem. The Harlem Makers Collective exhibition was organized by three Harlem creatives, artist and jewellery designer Maiko Suzuki, milliner Karema Deodato and fashion designer Heike Jarick. The events goal is to showcase some of the best local innovators and authentic contributors of Harlem. Harlem Makers Collective aims to provide forward thinking Harlem creatives with a platform to showcase their brands and generate a supportive community to share and grow their ideas. 

Today we have Heike Jarick, Jarick is a German-born, London-schooled, Milan-trained and globally focused fashion designer living in Harlem. She worked at fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto subsidiary collection in Tokyo. Jarick launched heike in 2015, a contemporary ready-to-wear label based in NYC with a focus on luxury outerwear and knits. She finds inspiration in contemporary art, music and architecture, namely the Bauhaus theory with a focus on “crafts and the fine arts”, and she uses fabric from Italy and Japan. heike pieces are often multi-use, multi-purpose and highly versatile, focusing on construction and deconstruction.

Director Clare Anyiam-Osigwe, director of No Shade that will premiere film on November 28th at Columbia University in Harlem. No Shade explores the hardships of the modern dating world through the dysmorphic presence of colorism as well as the fetishization of black women in a way that is tactful and honest. 

The film will premiere with a panel discussion led by shoe designer and Harlem World Magazine contributor Etu Evans and Clare Anyiam-Osigwe.

McChristian is the new Executive Director of Madison Square Boys & Girls Club. He has nearly four decades of experience in international business and philanthropy, rising to senior leadership positions at IBM and Dun & Bradstreet. He will spearhead Madison’s efforts to open its new Pinkerton Clubhouse in Harlem, which will be Madison’s largest and most advanced facility to date. Mr. McChristian joins Madison from the African Leadership Foundation, where he served as Executive Director, also served on the boards of A Better Chance (“ABC”) program, Student Sponsorship Program and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Mr. McChristian received his Bachelor of Science from Yale University and his Master of Business Administration in Finance from the Marshall School of Business at the University of Southern California. He lives in Harlem with his wife, Debbie, and has two adult children.

She has done extensive work in the field of improving cities as a public involvement specialist on transportation, environmental and facility planning projects, working on major projects in several cities that included reconstruction of highways and city streets, upgrading rail and bus systems, improving sewage-treatment facilities, creative public spaces, and sports and conventions center. I was with her on the Community Board 10, back in the early 1990’s. Listen to Harlem legend, Dr. Paul G. Falkowski, as he talks about the 2100 Harlem Mega Flood, Nobel Prize for the Environment, and more, with host Danny Tisdale, on The Danny Tisdale Show.

Dr. Paul Falkowski, known as the Godfather of oceanography, he was born in Harlem, and educated at the City College of New York, where he received his BSc. and MSc.degrees. He completed his doctoral thesis in biology and biophysics at the University of British Columbia in 1975. After postdoctoral research at the University of Rhode Island, he moved to the Brookhaven National Laboratory in 1976 to join its newly formed oceanography department, and in 1998 he moved to Rutgers University. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1992, and was appointed as Cecil and Ida Green Distinguished Professor at the University of British Columbia in 1996. He has been elected to a number of learned societies including the American Geophysical Union (2001), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2002) and the National Academy of Sciences (2007). He has also received a number of awards including the A.G. Huntsman Award for Excellence in the Marine Sciences (1998), the G. Evelyn Hutchinson Award (2000), the European Geosciences Union Vernadsky Medal (2005) and the ECI Prize (2010). In 2018, Paul Falkowski was nominated as a recipient of the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement for his work on phytoplankton as it relates to climate change impacts. He shares the 2018 Tyler Prize, with fellow biological oceanographer Dr. James J. McCarthy of Harvard University. He works at the Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences at Rutgers University, doing his influential research on the critical role of earth’s smallest lifeforms in the evolution of our modern climate.  Dr. Falkowski's research lab is one of the top labs worldwide for biological oceanography. https://www.whoi.edu/science/cinar/CVs/Falkowski_CV.pdf
