If you are the parent/guardian of deaf or hard of hearing children, or you are the actual student reading this, you may have known that there are the options of going to either a mainstream school or deaf school.

But what's the difference between the two types of schools, what are the disadvantages and disadvantages of both and which one should you attend?

For many people who are considered to be small 'd' deaf and particularly those who are hard of hearing, we are constantly labelled as being "not deaf enough" for the d/Deaf world and "not hearing enough" for the mainstream hearing world.

The only place left is that awkward middle bit, the intbetweener, the lonely bit, where it is tough because you don't feel like you belong anywhere.

So what do you do when you feel like this and how can you make it work for you?

Maybe you could create your own world instead...

Have you ever wondered what is it like for a deaf/hard of hearing student to attend mainstream schools?

Or perhaps you wanted to hear from 

As well as everything that is covered on this site that students can go through, like going through concentration fatigue or suffering from deaf anxiety, there are also unique challenges that deaf/hard of hearing students goes through.

Those challenges are likely to be amplified at mainstream schools (though deaf schools also have their own unique challenges too).

The purpose of this post is not to tell you whether to choose mainstream or deaf school, but to demonstrate my own personal experience of attending mainstream schools.

And because it's a personal experience, it does not mean that everyone goes through the same thing. This is my own experience only, but it may resonate with others.

I have flown with various airlines and on some long-distance flights too. While I was happy to work on the plane and read my books, I also wanted to used the in-flight entertainment if it was available.

But unfortunately, I was not able to (ever) have good experiences simply because they are rarely captioned.

Even though various airlines proudly boast about catering for deaf and hard of hearing passengers (and they do on most occasions), it's clear that they are still way behind with their in-flight entertainment, as most of the films are not captioned and (in my experience), neither are the TV programmes either.

Yet, we have to pay the same price as everyone else for a lesser experience. Is that fair?

The new emojis which are displaying hearing aids and a person signing are finally out, alongside many other emojis.

But are they truly accurate? And do they really represent d/Deaf people? Because it's one thing to display hearing aids and a person signing, it's another to make sure that they are accurate and it represents all d/Deaf and hard of hearing people.

But I'm not sure if it does.

A common that I get asked and I see on Google is whether a deaf or hard of hearing person can hear with their hearing aids on?

The short answer is the dreaded "it depends".

The long answer is that it's complicated.

But it's important for everyone to answer that hearing aids are not a solution. The key word is "aids" i.e. they can aid us to help better not make us hear as hearing people can do.

For most, if not all d/Deaf and hard of hearing people, social events can be an awkward one and a difficult one at the same time.

If everyone is talking and the environment is not right, then it's very easy to feel secluded and left alone.

But what if you, as a hearing person, want to prevent that? (And kudos to you for wanting to do that). How can you help to make a d/Deaf/hard of hearing person feel included, at least as much as possible?
