    "I Love My Phone"

    By Leigh Martinuzzi

Surely no one actually spends five hours a day on their mobile phones?

    Do you?

Recent studies suggest that the average person does. It's taken over the prime time slot of the TV - although we are watching way more video, too. That's a huge amount of our life - over the course of a year it equates to about four or five working weeks. Bloody lot of time!

Does it serve any great purpose? Most likely not. What do you think?

Have a listen to my thoughts about why we have become a race addicted to our phones and what we can do about it.

  • 634 Thomas Hubl – Mysticism, Inner Science, Consciousness and Evolution
    Mysticism and The Inner Self

Thomas Hübl is a visionary teacher, innovator, and founder of the pioneering Academy of Inner Science, which promotes the study of the principles of mysticism and human inner development.

Originally a student of medicine and science, Thomas took a radical departure into the exploration of mysticism, including a four-year meditation retreat. For the past 15 years, Thomas has dedicated himself to the systematic exploration of mysticism, gaining insights into how mystical knowledge can help fill in the gaps in science. In this conversation, I explore Thomas's distinct approach in understanding consciousness, evolution, and the junctures between mysticism and science.

    Guest bio

Thomas is a spiritual teacher whose work explores the leading edge of personal and collective transformation, combining meditative practices, somatic and subtle awareness, and conscious cultural engagement.

The Moral Animal by Robert Wright

    Written by Leigh Martinuzzi

When I read Why Buddhism is True by Robert Wright I was blown away by his fascinating perspectives, thorough research and occasional provocative insights. It became one of my favourite books in 2017 (Book review here). I was left inspired to discover more of his work. And so, I found The Moral Animal. A remarkable, mind assessing, scientific and provocative read.

  • 631 Enough! – by Leigh Martinuzzi
    Enough!

    By Leigh Martinuzzi

    Why is enough never enough?

I want more. I need more. I have to get more. Achieve more. Love more. Do more. Be more. Say more. Be right more. Think more. Enough!

Do you have enough? Are you doing enough? Are you enough?

Has anyone or anything in the history of the world ever genuinely been content with life? Fulfilled with everything they need or want. Grateful. Enough!

These are the thoughts I tackle in this episode.

Adversity is a Blessing in Disguise

Sh!t can happen to anyone, whether it's a life-threatening situation, a death in the family, a business gone bust, or another high-stress personal catastrophe. Tofe has faced some serious adversity, like most of us, yet found a way through. In this episode, Tofe offers tools to help you prepare yourself mentally to weather every impending storm. To some, he’s known as that kid who ran a race down the slopes of Mt Everest... but most of the time he gets called ‘crazy’ more times than his name. All for the right reasons though. Tofe is a thought leader on resilience not on hacking the body to get you the set of abs you’ve always wanted. He's here so you have the mental artillery to hold yourself together. This is why having a six-pack mind is imperative.

  • 627 You’re Fired!!! by Leigh Martinuzzi
    You're Fired!!!

    By Leigh Martinuzzi

Have you ever been terminated? What a disaster! Or is it?

Many years ago I was terminated on the spot and put under investigation for some bullshit reason. At least that's how I saw it and I was proven right. But who truly gives a fuck?

At the time it was a bit of a blow to the head. To be honest it caused me a lot of stress. The sudden dismissal left me without work in a time of need. I just became a new father. Good news is that we were well off and could survive the hurdle. It was proven to be unfair dismissal but it didn't change the fact that I was now without work.

The experience left me with many kinds of emotions, confusion, slight depression, anger and strangely, a sense of excitement. This is my story and some of the lessons I learnt. One which I am grateful for.

  • 626 Carl Zimmer – The Powers, Perversions, and Potential of Heredity
    The Potential of Heredity

I interview Carl Zimmer, an award-winning, celebrated New York Times columnist and science writer. In this episode, Carl presents a profoundly original perspective on what we pass along from generation to generation. Carl suggests that although Charles Darwin played a crucial part in turning heredity into a scientific question, he failed spectacularly to answer it. The birth of genetics in the early 1900s seemed to do precisely that. A fascinating conversation.

    Guest Bio

Carl Zimmer is the author of thirteen books about science. His newest book is She Has Her Mother’s Laugh: The Power, Perversions, and Potential of Heredity. His column Matter appears each week in the New York Times.

Zimmer’s writing has earned a number of awards, including the 2016 Stephen Jay Gould Prize, awarded by the Society for the Study of Evolution to recognize individuals whose sustained efforts have advanced public understanding of evolutionary science.

A professor adjunct at Yale University, Zimmer is a familiar voice on programs such as Radiolab. He lives in Connecticut with his wife Grace and their children, Charlotte and Veronica. He is, to his knowledge, the only writer after whom a species of tapeworm has been named.
