Here is the second exciting chapter of the seminal reading of what several publications are calling, "The Story of the Century".  And yes, I lifted that from one of the hundreds of jacket blurbs and boiler-plate reviews culled from the volumes lining bookshelves from Brookings, Oregon to Yokuska, Japan. At least I got one right.  It is the second chapter. But is it exciting, the best of its class, included in the elite 100, and called by many the story of the century? No. At least not to my knowledge. 

BUT I WON'T LET THAT STOP ME. As mentioned in our sister posting today, yes, we've been busy, but practice doesn't always make perfect. It does, 99 times out of 100, make whatever you are doing, better. Once the creator of said skills, dreams or promises, gets to better, said creator has a choice to make (at the crossroads). She can continue to improve, or simply be satisfied with the level of acumen achieved getting to the aforementioned intersection. If she chooses to continue the journey, the quality of the practice must become perfect in order for her practice to make perfect. The distinction is not too subtle. It is Moby huge, and not many have the stamina, opportunity or courage to even consider the scope of the challenge, let alone go there.

Yet here we are. Chasing something better than what we currently have, or where we currently are. 

I invite you, again, to join the process, this small, quick, inconsequential journey of a thousand words. I want to get better and this is a part of that. I truly believe that this is a tale that should be told to as many people as possible. It has it all, history, drama, conflict, irony, honor, dignity, friendship, loss, war, peace and everything between them. My protagonist is Japanese. He was doing his Emperor's bidding when he was assigned to killing Americans during WWII. It haunted him forever, until he was given an invitation whose proxy was redemption. He was, to quote from the screenplay, an honorable man. 

This is ChapterTwo his story. I hope I have done him some justice.

Special added matinee for Memorial Day!!!

Somewhat a potpourri of data today. I suppose, like a lie-filled campaign promise, that I could blame it on my heavily wrapped right thumb, sliced yesterday by a single-edge razor blade as I cleaned the front door glass and thereby making it even harder to type with any degree of speed and/or accuracy, but I won’t. In writing this I recall one of my many mentors once saying that one should not apologize for the performance before actually preforming it. As in, “let the audience be the judge”.  Dynamite advice, I consider, to this very day. That done, let's roll.

BACK TO BLACK challenges neither our perceptions of its subject nor the conventions of its genre, and is ultimately barely less tawdry than the paparazzi that hounded her to her grave. Its greatest offense is probably the failure to break free of biopic convention, although its not nearly as dire as detractors claim.

Could any film with almost a 90% audience score be so misunderstood? Could all the critics, every one of them, be so arrogant, stuffy and pompous to agree on its failure? Or is it something else? You be the judge.

LA CHIMERA

A genetic chimerism or chimera is a single organism composed of cells with more than one distinct genotype. In animals and human chimeras, this means an individual derived from two or more zygotes, which can include possessing blood cells of different blood types, and subtle variations in form. 

Everyone has their own Chimera, something they try to achieve but never manage to find. For the band of tombaroli, thieves of ancient grave goods and archaeological wonders, the Chimera means redemption from work and the dream of easy wealth. For Arthur, the Chimera looks like the woman he lost, Beniamina. To find her, Arthur challenges the invisible, searches everywhere, goes inside the earth -- in search of the door to the afterlife of which myths speak. In an adventurous journey between the living and the dead, between forests and cities, between celebrations and solitudes, the intertwined destinies of these characters unfold, all in search of the Chimera.

The Times calls the film "wonderfully strange", while The Hollywood Reporter cited the changes in tone, film formats and aspect ratio, and levels of reality an "appealing looseness", and ScreenDaily adds that La Chimera "succeeds when it doesn’t worry too much about neatness and precision."

Last slice of potpourri pie today is the exciting news that ONCE AN ENEMY, Chapter Two is dropping immediately following the publishing of this weekly feature. And rightfully so, COMING ATTRACTIONS > ONCE AN ENEMY, looks and sounds better than its mirror image, or even backwards.

This is the tale of an unlikely hero. It is the true story based upon historical fact. I have taken the creative liberty to add detail and circumstance to the narrative in order to provide what I feel is appropriate context and a plausible back-story. The primary characters all contributed to the making of the primary storyline. I have added background locations, characters and situations in order to move the plot and provide elements of information necessary, I trust, that create the overall feel of the time, locations and dates in which they took place. 

The format will be to publish one chapter per week of approximately 10-15 minutes each, depending on where an opportune break in the script allows. I am doing this for a couple of reasons, one, and by far the most important, is that by reading the script aloud in a recording environment, it helps me to see and hear lines of dialogue, character traits, descriptions and details previously considered final. I found it an amazing creative journey to transpose the script to the spoken word format (without the use of AI) and have made several revisions as a direct result. Second is the pragmatic. It has long been the vision to first create a trailer of the screenplay in order to have another tool with which to attract production funding for the feature. After the viewing of "They Shot the Piano Player" here at the HLT, I was so impressed by the animation used that the thought of a similar approach hit me like a ton of bricks. "It might be a great way to market the story using  a read as compared to trying to get into the right room via the more traditional methods", the bricks said upon landing on my head. Hummmmmm. Why not? What have we to lose? So here we are, launching another project. 

The successful timeline would then look something like this: Chapter One is released today. May 14, 2024. The current revision of the screenplay is 128 pages. Chapter One took me to page 7. I am estimating that there will be approximately 20 chapters. Give or take. Twenty weeks takes us to the middle of September. At that time I will send the link to anyone, anywhere who might have a coat-tail connection to a producer or capitol investment group or even do it via crowdfunding. TBD.

Am I worried about some unscrupulous use of my IP? The screenplay of the same name is under copyright protection from the USPTO at the Library of Congress. Meaning that any derivative, as used here, is also covered. Answering the question, no, I am not.

Thanks again to everyone who came out Saturday night to partake in the magical music of Perl Django. As mentioned several times by the appreciative crowd, the five masters of their crafts put on a magnificent show, virtuoscity flashing from their fingertips like sparklers on the Fourth of July. Even my musician buddies stood in awe of their talent. It was a great eight month series and as we refresh and regroup for the second series, wish me luck in our marketing meeting tomorrow when I propose to extend the series to ten. CIVIL WAR. Where to start? Last night in our post screening exit poll, as I listened intently to a couple search for antonyms and metaphors, it struck me as a perfect comparison, that of four friends sitting at a table enjoying each others company, perhaps on a deck overlooking the water on a summer evening, working on a crossword puzzle. Obviously the puzzle is of secondary concern to the conversation and camaraderie. Hours later, when the sun has set, they finish. But there are four pieces missing. Huge holes in the mosaic. They all frustratingly search for the missing pieces and failing in the attempt, finally give up. Sad, because so much effort was applied only to be ended without the satisfaction of seeing the fruit of their labor. It was fun along the way, but without the complete final product, it feels like they have been wasting time, or cheated somehow. The puzzle of course was the poster of CIVIL WAR. Read this for another interesting POV, one taking a much deeper state of our society approach.

BACK TO BLACK: The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse's early rise to fame and the making of her groundbreaking album, Back to Black. Told from Amy's perspective and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film follows the remarkable woman behind the phenomenon and the tumultuous relationship at the center of one of the most legendary albums of all time. Here is a review from Variety for you needing a little more depth and detail prior to viewing. 

Lastly today folks, I am pleased to introduce another tangential offering in our weekly celebration of the arts by the launch of (not quite sure on what to call this) my read of my screenplay. Not too catchy, I know, but maybe by next week’s Chapter Two I will have something a little more, ah, Hollywood. Although I am happy with Lynwood. PHANTOM MENACE notes:

The 25th Anniversary release on The Force of May, stimulated a decent box office day at the HLT, but everything else has been rather lackluster. Sci-Fi just not our thing? A weak attempt at a prequel backstory? Jar Jar Binks? Whatever your, justified, opinion, the only thing Disney did to draw this reporters ire was to insist we screen their trailer for the upcoming ACOLYTE series. Which, according to the climatic ‘big voice’ conclusion of said trailer streams on Disney Plus on June 14. EFFECTIVELY LEAVING US (Your favorite local one-screen) SHUT OUT, IN THE DARK AND SKIPPED OVER LIKE SOME STALE LEFTOVER PIZZA) Yo, Disney Marketing Department folks, although I suspect this might have come from a desk a few rungs higher on their food chain) DO NOT BITE THE HAND THAT HAS FED YOU FOR 88 F****ING YEARS. You fat bastards. You slime ball knuckle draggers. You sacks of fetid gelding vomit. You…… well, you get the idea. I’ll have to rewatch WICKED LITTLE LETTERS again if I really want to spice things up. I should take the trailer down if for no other reasons than to demonstrate that at least someone in this industry still operates under general principals. That would be us in case you are wondering. 

CIVIL WAR. As if all of the above wasn’t enough, CW is Writer/Director Alex Garland’s story of a journey across a dystopian future America that follows a team of embedded journalists in a race against time to reach DC before rebel forces attempt a coup on the White House incumbents. My initial reaction to this, as I am sure was probably yours, was: Which side will they take? The answer to that, it appears, is no one’s. Left to your ambiguous bias and depending on what channel you tune into for the evening news. I, of course, will be cheering for the good guys, which I hope are the journalists. We shall see. Following is one of the many comments from IMDB:

The genius of this film rests partially in an absurd alliance between California and Texas, two of the most opposite states in the Union. By joining this ideological odd couple, the story immunizes itself against accusations of partisanship or cultural favortism. Yet it also beckons us to imagine what kind of national crisis could bring such opposites together.

Yes, one can only imagine. 

Lastly today, I would like to announce that starting next week, seven days from today, I will be releasing one chapter a week of a reading of my screenplay, Once An Enemy. It is a 'based on the true story' (historical fiction) of the Japanese pilot who dropped four bombs on the United State during WWII. He also became an honorary citizen of the town he bombed. Tune in and hear the tale.

Did I say how much I like this incredible piece of art? I will again say that they blend of animation, music, the tory itself and the compelling way in which it was assembled, is off the charts phenomenal. I really enjoyed allowing the soul of this little film carry me into the stratosphere. An amazing achievement deserving of far more views than what we have seen so far. It is, I’m my opinion, the quintessential “art-house” film. 

Do I need to further belabor the point that George Lucas “borrowed heavily” from Frank Herbert?? You know all that. Dune is so much more complex and layered. But SW has made more money than any other franchise, by far, so one can only hope that Denis and Co will begin immediately to chip away at his lead and when all the spice has settled, sit atop the SciFi desert of dough. If for no other reason than to lend credence to the Tennant that if one controls the spice, one controls all.

Big HLT thanks to everyone who assisted in  creating the Common Ground Event last night. We had a packed house filled with altruistic and community minded (community meaning the global community) progressive leaders. An acre of well-enriched soil of important dialogue was exchanged, shared and discussed. As a vegetarian since Reagan's slime ball economic, political and social malfeasance (yesterday I researched who was behind the idea to tax one's social security - and guess who?)  I applaud all efforts to provide for our nutritional needs and not simply the capitalistic. Yo, rich fuckers (literally borrowed from Wicked Letters) wait till the day where you have to eat money. 

A few movie notes, as I am feeling much better after unloading that diatribe.

Wow, that’s a lot of entertainment value, so let’s take a deeper dive.

Based on the book If It's Not Impossible...: The Life of Sir Nicholas Winton by Barbara Winton, ONE LIFE tells the incredible, emotional true story of Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton (Johnny Flynn). In a race against time, Winton convinces  the British Committee for Refugees in Czechoslovakia to rescue hundreds of predominantly Jewish children before Nazi occupation closes the borders. Fifty years later, Nicky (Anthony Hopkins) is haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England. It's not until the BBC show "That's Life!" re-introduces him to some of those he helped rescue that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he carried -- all the while skyrocketing from anonymity to a national hero. 

And then on Friday.

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous mystery comedy.  WICKED LITTLE LETTERS follows two neighbors: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime, prompting a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town's women -- led by Police Officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) -- begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all, it's a shrewd and profane little crowd-pleaser that will delight those who are not afraid of a little sharp bitterness in their comedies.

Following are a few of the comments, used here as adjectives, that your fellow movie goers have employed when polled upon leaving the auditorium after a screening of PROBLEMISTA. I will combine them into a single sentence, one I am quite sure Hemingway would hate. 

PROBLEMISTA is a cute, adorable, better than expected, character driven, refreshing love story, with several important topics of the human condition covered and examined. Well OK then. Maybe the Have nots finally get to Have some. Of whatever it is they seek. In this case, it is the story line. How to - legally - stay in the US, with an expired Visa looming like a ticking time bomb. How could hilarity and drama NOT follow a setup like that???? You will have to make the short pilgrimage to the HLT sometime before Thursday to find out for yourself. Por favor. 

ONE LIFE is a gamble. Why? Because it is rare - as in never - the we pinch a title from Big Brother up at the Pavilion. But the available alternatives are bleak. There simply is a dearth of decent films available from the Hollywood movie machine. And so, after reading a few review, scouring the digital tabloids, and tossing the yarrow stalks, I am taking the gamble that YOU will appreciate this selection. Why? Try this for a storyline:

Storyline

The true story of Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it's 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It's not until a live BBC television show, 'That's Life', surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children - now adults - that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.

In closing, there have been three movies in my life during which I have cried. Not sobbing, my dog died, wailing, but, a chocked-up, empathetic tear or two style of emotional release. Those were:

1) Pollyanna (I was 9)

2) ET (I was 29)

3) Schindler’s List (I was 39)

Any novice data analyst will quickly draw conclusions. What happened when you were 19 and, what has happened since Schindler? Taking another real risk, I will confess that at 19 I was way too involved with baseball, my GF and my ’65 mustang to see may movies, other than the one’s playing at the theatre where I was an usher, and between the ages of 40 and 70, my emotions were maturing faster than Hollywood screenwriters could crank out more tear-jerkers. I guess. Regardless, I am looking forward to watching Sir Anthony in this role. Hope you are too.
