There you have it. I have culled one, a single one, from the hundreds of comments on our current film, PERFECT DAYS. It is from Daniel Clark of the Irish Times. Daniel writes, “ Jonathan Livingston Lavatory Cleaner, Zen and the Art of Lavatory Maintenance, but better than that, sharper, less sentimental, less aphoristic. A film you can life your life by.” I am going to shout that so you don’t doom scroll past it, A FILM YOU CAN LIVE YOUR LIFE BY. Have you ever applied that claim to a film?? Right, me either. You had best come and find out why this bold statement was suggested by an Irish Film Critic. It ends Thursday. And yes, I have plenty of Battle Point Stout to accompany your viewage. But no saki, sorry.

PROBLEMISTA was written by Julio Torres (he of Saturday Night Live fame), Directed by Julio Torres and Stars Julio Torres, alongside Tilda Swinton. It is a comedy, runs 98 minutes and distributed by our friends at A24. Here is the synopsis:

Alejandro (Torres) is an aspiring toy designer from El Salvador struggling to bring his unusual ideas to life in NYC. As time runs out on his work visa, his job assisting erratic art-world outcast (Swinton) becomes his only hope to stay in the USA. 

I have been playing the trailer since Friday and it looks like this might be the sleeper of the year. As with all advance synopsis and their video counterparts, trailers, what we have seen so far (did you know that there is an Academy Award for trailers?) looks like a romp in the park. Word on the street has it that Julio Torres has that rare gift of comedic inspiration, the type of wit that creates fresh and original material which is clever and organic, resonating brightly with mature audiences. Like yourself.

On Saturday, March 30, Far Away Entertainment will host a memorial for former owner, film devote and ex-mayor of B.I. Sam Granato. A short tribute will be followed by the first film that Sam screened at the Historic Lynwood upon his purchase in 1982, DAS BOOT. The screening is free for family, friends and HLT supporters, as well as popcorn and soda. A late screening of PROBLEMISTA will follow the memorial at 7:15.

Editors Note: (Yes, I wear that hat too) Of these two great films, if I had only enough dinero to watch one, I would pick ANATOMY.

Not that POOR THINGS isn’t an eye-watering filmmaking achievement or that Emma Stone doesn’t deserve her gold statue, it is simply ANATOMY is one of those rare films with which you can safely use the adjective 'flawless' when offering critique. Dig? 

Moving on then.

On Friday night we are hosting a landmark Island event, the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation Mountain Bike Film Fest. Films, food, raffles, Miguelito’s Street Tacos (out front) guest speakers, swag, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to join the tribe and become something larger than a solitary cyclist (alone out there in the wilderness). Tickets are a puny $10 and available at the door. Or here.

The synopsis on PERFECT DAYS immediately strikes me as almost internationally ironic. Do you remember that delicious little film a few years back titled DRIVE MY CAR? Yes, taken from the spectacular novel of the same name by Haruki Murakami. Who also wrote Norwegian Wood for you Beatles trivia fans. Well, this one, written and directed by Wim Wenders, he of Paris, Texas fame, to me, sounds joined at the hip like yin and yang. A Zen (I am assuming) practitioner works as a toilet cleaner in Tokyo. He is respected, focused, and quiet, living his days in ritualistic bliss while enjoying books, music and photography. Until a series of unlikely events change his stoic mindset to create a whole new empty cup of tea for his consideration. Drive My Car in the rearview mirror, if you are asking me, should be streamed tonight after you get home from the theatre. And I, for one, cannot wait till Saturday at 1:30 for this cinematic meditation from Master Wenders to hum into high gear!  Hope to see you here.

POOR THINGS: 2:21, Rated R, Buena Vista

The incredible tale of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unconventional Mary Shelly fanboy, Dr. Goodwin Baxter. 

POOR THINGS was nominated in five categories, Best makeup & hairstyling, best musical achievement for motion picture, and best directing. As well as winning the golden Oscar for Best Directing and Best actress in a leading role. The latter two going to Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone respectively. It also stars Mark Rufallo and Willem Dafoe. Combined, these are three of Hollywood’s greatest A-listers of the last decade. Maybe longer. And you thought Oppenheimer was stacked!

Not to be outdone, ANATOMY of a FALL was nominated in five categories as well; Best Picture, Best Directing, Actress in a lead role, and Film Editing. It was written and directed by Justine Triet who picked up the (coveted) Best Original Screenplay award. It runs 2:30, is Rated R and distributed by Neon. Following is its one sentence storyline:

A woman is suspected of murder after her husbands death. While on trial her half-blind son faces a moral dilemma as the star witness. 

ED NOTE: How nice to see both Best Directing and Best Original Screenplay awarded to first-timers out of the Hollywood old boys network. Borderline criminal that Lilly Gladstone wasn’t with them. 

Don’t forget: THE GOTHARD SISTERS - THURSDAY, MARCH 14th @ 7 and (what I am suspecting will be) the First Annual MOUNTAIN MOVIE NIGHT on MARCH 22, at 6pm, a fund raiser for the new BIKE PARK at Strawberry Hill. Sponsored by partners Bainbridge Parks & Trails Foundation. The evening will feature several bike films, mostly off-road, great food and drink, guest speakers, a raffle, and more prizes that you can shake a kickstand at. The core audience demographic at the HLT, unlike the morass melting pot of America, knows what they like. They know the genera, the length, the trope and the backstory They are like folks who like Wes Anderson. Not everybody likes Wes Anderson, but those that do, REALLY LIKE WES ANDERSON.

Did you miss me? After 104 consecutive weeks of exciting podcast action here at the HLT, I took a four day mini vacation to Las Vegas last week, and in so doing, missed the weekly ‘cast.  One thousand and one pardons. So let’s get started on a new streak, shall we?

Dune II is magnificent. It is so good that I am taking another vacation, this the classic Bussman’s Holiday tomorrow to watch with captions opened. My hearing is getting so bad I’m getting good at lip reading. And the captions help with some critical dialogue crucial to following this incredibly deep and expansive story. I was a heart-beat away from seeing an advance IMAX screening in Sin City, but the only remaining seats were in the first row. Headacheville for me. Here is the schedule, which will be constant for awhile. 

DUNE II @ 3:45 & 7 Daily - 12:30, 3:45 & 7 on Sat & Sun. 

Also we are conducting an exit poll survey in conjunction with the simul-screening at both the HLT and BI Cinemas. Just a couple of softball questions that might take five minutes of your time. Prof David Domke and Executive Director of Common Power will host a slide show and discussion on what we - that’s you and me - can do to ensure that our Democracy does not end on our watch. Because those are the stakes folks. To quote the late hero John Lewis, “When we pray, we must also move our feet”. That means action. Our event will provide a roadmap for how we can impact the fight for our democracy and pass a new voting rights act. WE NEED YOU HERE! WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6 @ 5PM.

Sunday, March 10 is the 96th Academy Awards from the Dolby Theatre in LA. Maybe next year we’ll try one here. (I can tell you now that DUNE II will win in several categories).

HLT 134 with Andrew Taylor

This session contains commentary on all ten of the 2023 Oscar nominated films. While respecting the ‘No-Spoiler’ rule at the HLT as much as possible, Andrew and I take the occasional misstep of the cliff and end up face planted on the asphalt below ala Wiley Coyote. Our conversation was interrupted at the 58 minute mark by a combination of technical malfunction and human error. Mostly the latter for which I assume all responsibility. Vowing to learn the advanced techniques of my cell phone (a cheap droid) and get a new one for the HLT, one which actually has a functional speaker mode, I invite you, nonetheless, to join us in the Oscar buzz contained herein. 

Andrew Taylor personifies the industry standard calling for a broad range of skills. His 9-5 is as audio-visual coordinator for corporate presentations, meetings, and whatever cutting-edge media mash-ups the Seattle area commercial conglomerates can concoct. A position not for the faint of heart. He is also a filmmaker, currently working on a TV pilot and enjoying the reception his three latest short films are receiving. Cutting to the chase scene, he knows his way around a sound stage, on-location set and the how-to knowledge required of writers, directors, cinematographers, and post production artists. He is a great interview and the first humanoid to appear THREE TIMES on this show. See (listen) for yourself.

HLT Podcast #133 with Jeb Thornburg

My guest today is Island architect, builder, cyclist, entrepreneur, and neighbor, Jeb Thornburg. Most, if not all, of you will immediately recognize Jeb and his talented partner Belinda, as the driving twin forces behind the Roost Bainbridge project located a nine iron from Walts. Yes, the modular and modern buildings with the ever changing patina we all know as rust. Turns out, as I always suspected, that there is science, technology and ecology behind those structures relatively new to the Lynwood community. I say relatively new because there are few that came before our 1936 debut, all of 88 years ago. 

Our conversation begins and ends with the movies of course, Sir Ridley Scott, and Philip K. Dick’s replicants being the sourdough that we sandwich the tasty topics between. Hold the mayo. A few of the fillings include conversational trips back to Cal Poly SLO, riding with the notorious 711 crew and a fateful ferry boat ride to BI some thirty years ago. 

Jeb and Belinda’s latest project is the humanitarian start-up designed to solve the World’s housing dilemma, covering the climate, energy and financial challenges everyone but the top 1 percent must face. If you were among the fortunate crowd present at the HLT on Saturday night gawking at Josh Anderson’s gnarly extreme ski films, you watched a very cool promo piece, done by former Islander and past guest of the show, Sam McJunkin, on the subject of the affordable and ultimately sustainable, small, portable and outlandishly stylish, small homes Jeb & Belinda manufacture over in Yakima county. You can find the video on their site here. I give it, the video and the product, five stars. 

But wait there’s more…Jeb also tips us to the news that Phase Camp of their grand Lynwood design is about to enter the construction zone. But, sorry I’m not usually one for click bait, however you will simply have to listen to him tell the fascinating story in his own words. 

All four today folks, and always keep in mind, as we agreed to on the ‘cast, that one of the most challenging, and therefore rewarding, traits a person can have, is that of being a good neighbor. The Thornburgs are all of that.

And not to be outdone by all that cinematic excellence, on THU FEB 29 we will screen a sneak preview of the most anticipated release of the time period known as the run up to the Academy Awards presentations themselves on March 10, by offering a dramatic work penned by Islander Brian Herbert, youngest son of Frank, at 3pm. This is monumental in more ways than ten. I think you know why. Can I get Mr Herbert to sit and talk with my about the saga, the fanfare, the history, the lore, his Dad and Paul Atredies? 

You have my word on it that I will try my very best. Can I get all this done before the premiere on March 1?

Sooooooo, as we hosted local celebrity architect, cyclist and entrepreneur Jeb Thornburg on the podcast this afternoon and I promised him I would try to get that episode published as soon as I finished this one, it is time for me to bid you all adieu, and get back to work. 

But before I do, I would like to comment on the spectacle that DUNE truly is. I know that Science Fiction or Science Fantasy are not the favorite genera of our core audience here at the HLT, but, this is damn good movie making, and, furthermore, for those of you who find our humble Dolby 5.1 surround sound somewhat lacking, THIS MOVIE WILL CHANGE YOUR OPINION. And by halfway through the first act at that!!!!

Coming Attractions, Tuesday, Jan 6

This is the cinematic equivalent of Murders’ Row. Between them, OPPENHEIMER AND KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON have been nominated for 25 Academy Awards, including, natch, Best Picture, Best Director, Best Leading Actor and Best Screenplay. Since Friday when we announced this killer lineup I have been doing my routine exit poll, in this case asking “If you had a vote, which one would it be?” I will reveal the results after the big business at hand.

Just when you thought we were done with the good, it goes to great, from red hot to white hot, from improbable to impossible. DUNE after OPPENHEIMER AND KILLER MOON? I’ll say it again, WHAT A LINEUP. And please check out that Saturday night at the ol’ ballpark (theatre). DUNE 2021 for two matinees, Josh Anderson’s pair of extreme ski shorts - followed by a Q&A with Josh & Co afterwards, and another BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL screening of THE SWEET EAST, with introduction and Q&A with BIFF Show runner Charles Poekel immediately after the credit roll.  And the hits just keep a comin’ because the following week we launch another stack of sweet takes with the OSCAR NOMINATED SHORTS, and, ZONE OF INTEREST. I humbly ask you what else can we do?
