SHOWING UP. I watched another long section in the middle of last nights nightcap and came away with an augmented appreciation of both Kelly Richardt’s writing and direction and Michelle Williams’ acting chops. Her portrayal of the affected protagonist is worthy of attention. Most notably because she, unlike many actors is not simply playing themselves, but a deeply troubled, neurotic artist struggling to survive with limited social skills amid a backdrop of uncontrollable chaos on several levels. Is her neurosis on display as the embodiment of her art? Will the success of this be her salvation, or will fruition fly our the door like a pigeon given the opportunity to escape to the freedom of the natural world? It is a slow, deliberate, and often painful snapshot of the suffering and sacrifice many artists must accept in order to allow the inner creative to manifest. How that affects the banal day to day responsibilities of paying rent, staying healthy, enjoying a relationship, taking care of pets, community and family is the backdrop to the continually increasing conflict of her circumstance. What will it take to get “better”? 

BEAU is AFRAID. Written and Directed by Ari Aster and starring Joaquin Phoenix. Rated R, runs 3 hours, from A-24. Storyline: Following the sudden death of his mother, a mild-mannered but anxiety ridden man confronts his darkest fears as he embarks on an epic, Kafkaesque odyssey back home. Tagline: From his darkest fears comes the greatest adventure. 

Editorial comment: Perhaps there is enough innuendo we can cull from the Director’s style via his trademarks to glean a glimpse of what to expect from Mr. Astor’s script and his direction of one of Hollywood’s current A level stars, Mr. Phoenix. Is “A seamless mix of horror and extremely dark comedy with unflinching depiction of graphic violence through long uninterrupted camera shots and a keen interest in pagan religions and cults” enough? Is for me.

MAFIA MAMMA:

An American Mom (Toni Collette) inherits her grandfathers mafia empire in Italy. Guided by the firm’s consigliere (Monica Bellucci) she hilariously defies everyone’s expectations as the new head of the family business. 

Rated R for the the usual sex and violence elements (although the former Is more implied and the latter rather brutal) it runs 101 minutes and plays on the usual stereotypes that have captured (and held hostage) American audiences since around the time of the Medici. It is a farce of a farce, BUT if you are seeking some lighthearted escapism, and appreciate Toni and Monica’s acting charms, guardalo (see it).

SHOWING UP:

A sculptor (Michelle Williams) preparing for a new show tries to work amidst the daily drama of family and friends. 

Written and Directed by Kelly Reichardt, noted for her use of mood and atmosphere more that intricate plot elements, it currently enjoys a 86% Tomotometer rating from the professional critic folks, Todd Jorgensen of Cinemalog among them. Todd says: “Despite its muted emotions the deliberately paced and playful film generates hard-earned sympathy for artists navigating the commercial aspects o their craft while maintaining their freedom.” Looking forward to this one. Sound cool?

Charles Poekel is my guest today. Charlie has the distinction of meeting both our requisites as qualification to sit in the guest directors chair in the projection booth, retrofitted home of the Lynwood Theatre Podcast. These qualifications, as is well known, are, simply, that one must have an area of expertise that includes art, the humanities, or, as in the case of Governor Jay Inslee, a deep respect for those that create said art.  Secondly a connection to the geographic coordinates known colloquially as Bainbridge Island. As the Gov, Charlie Poekel has both. In spades. 

Born in upstate New Jersey, and relocating to the left coast just in time for the pandemic, he has the distinction of having met his wife by an introduction from the son of one of our owners, the honorable Sam Granato. How’s that for a plot twist of delicious irony? I met Charlie about ten minutes prior to our session and knew we would get on just fine as I recognized the logo on his ball cap to be from the album artwork of one of my faves, Jerry Garcia. The Chain would remain Unbroken I vowed silently entering the studio. 

Prior to taking a full-time position at Cornish in Seattle (Brendan Frasier, Reggie Watts, Ann Wilson) as Prof of Film, he wrote, directed and produced a feature titled, “Christmas, again.” It played at Sundance among others and received terrific reviews. You can read a few of them here.

Another feather in his cap is the launching of the Bainbridge Island Film Festival, BIFF. Scheduled for a September launch, all the information a budding, or established, filmmaker needs can be found at Film Freeway or their website at BainbridgeIslandFilm.org. A particularly important detail is the free submission offer to any filmmaker with a Kitsap County address. Hey, that’s me! 

Charlie and I covered a lot of ground in our ‘just short of an hour’ exchange. I had a great time, even managing to drop a bombshell announcement, the fallout of which I will use as clickbait to entice you into a listen. One hint, this HLT APB offers a substantial reward for information leading to the location and subsequent communication with, of, arguably, the most influential name in film OF ALL TIME. THAT should be explosive enough for your demanding tastes for BOTH social commentary and the most difficult of genres, gangster comedy. As a segue from one to the other, from the absolute dramatic seriousness of the former to the outlandish, slapstick silliness of the latter, I offer a few notes on each. Soup to nuts as they say in foodie world.

HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE, is an adaptation from the book of the same name by Andreas Malm. The screenwriters, Daniel Golhaber and Ariel Barer, have crafted a stunningly suspenseful dramatic narrative of a group of kids (I can say that in generational reference to the Gen Z gang of courageous young adults) as they plot, plan and eventually execute their bold statement of desperation. I say bold because the antagonists are the corporations, recognized as people by the conservative capitalists putting bottom line profits at the top of their priority lists, stacking the deck with their power, the politicians on their payroll, the armies at their disposal and the public gaslighting propaganda that  calls for these heroic actions to be seen as terrorism. IT IS NOT. Yet, it is always with a taste of hypocrisy that we sometimes feel torn between two lovers. We all like the idea of having cheap gas with which to fill our tanks, yet we LOVE the idea of environmental protections and the preservation of our forests, rivers, snow caps and salmon. THE IDEA. Not the actual front-line demonstration of the extent of that idea. That is for somebody else. And THAT is exactly what the “American Empire” or “Deep State” want you feel powerless against. Remember that the pithy slogan ,“You can’t fight city hall” was devised and promoted by City Hall themselves. That paradox is the story. And I can’t help but wonder if that might be the underlying reason why, despite its 95% Metascore, the actual Box Office numbers have been, to date, rather poor. Is this coming too close to home? Do we really still think that we can vote our way out of this mess? What would YOU do if offered a million tax-free dollars to “stay silent” when the vote comes to the floor over environmental regulations? This is three acts of desperation. I love this film in the same way that I loved Linoleum, well made small films telling important stories about uncomfortable modern ironies.

MAFIA MAMMA takes the risky fish out of water approach matching comedy with the inbred gangster culture of the Mafia. I am interested in this film for the single reason that I have visited the shooting locations on several occasions and find them fascinating on several fronts; The architecture, the people, their lifestyles, and the artistic blend of city chaos and countryside splendor. Having 50% of my DNA passed to me via familia Mainelli della Nord, It has long been my passion to investigate “all things Italian” (tutti cose Italiano). This one then, should suffice in that life-long quest. I just hope that the comedy doesn’t sink to stereotype lows or jabs we’ve all seen a thousand times. Monica Bellucci is in it so that is two reasons. Another one is Cinema Paradiso, my favorite all-time Italian film. I’ve got a thousand lira that says there is at least one reference to it, alongside the obligatory winks at la familia Corelone.  Lastly, please remember that:

Historical Context:

1) Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin are in their mid-eighties. They have been around. There are only two reasons why such accomplished thespians would continue to toil in close proximity to the white hot spot lights of the stage. One is for money, to pay the rent. The other is that they love what they do and are passionate about the eternal challenge of creating good art by telling a story. I get the distinct feeling that their motivation comes from the latter. 

2) Superman 1978 (produced on a 55M budget and returning 300M) was one of the big three that forever changed the course of movies as we know them. It was the first Super Heroes movie, soon to become the leading money-making genera of all time. The two others released in 77&78 are, of course, Star Wars (11M and 220M) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (20M & 300M). Those were the good (and profitable) old days of Hollywood, 1977&78. 

3) How to Blow Up a Pipeline, Directed by Daniel Goldhaber and Staring Ariela Barer, who also did the screenplay, is the story of environmental activism and climate change. “If the American Empire is calling us terrorists, then we are doing something right,” is one of the lines of dialogue from the film. Erik Marcher of Rogers TV says, “From the very first frame along with the synth scoring from Erik Brivik, you will be gripped by unrelenting  suspense, so don’t forget to take a deep breath before the theatre lights start to dim.” Fortunately for us we show a couple of commercials and a pair of trailers before you need to inhale deeply.

4) Is Wednesday, June 21 circled on your calendar? That is the date of our annual fundraiser, this year to celebrate our 87th year of operation! Fifteen full hours of live music, free movies, an auction, food samples, a fashion show, bingo, guest speakers and whatever else I can concoct to add some Lynwood Center stye magic to  your enjoyment of the arts. The Historic Lynwood Theater, owned and operated by Far Away Entertainment of Bainbridge Island, is pleased to announce the date and outline of their annual celebration of the arts, this year to he staged on June 21, also the date of the summer solstice. Aptly titled, The Longest Day, will feature fifteen hours of non-stop entertainment, from 9am to midnight. Movies, music, magic, food, an auction, a film festival, merchandise and the live filming of all events to create a documentary video, assisted by local filmmakers, musicians and post production artists. As a fund raising event, all donated proceeds will go towards upgrading the historic venue, including curtains, seats, sound system and several other much needed improvements. The celebration of 87 years of continual operation, longest on the Island, except perhaps the Bainbridge Review, a debate that continues, the numerical value naturally is the fund raising goal. The accounting department reports that if every person on the island contributed $3.87 (less than a cup of Coffee) the ambitious target would be hit! A few of the day’s features include:

It’s April, and things are not as they seem. You know that. But you also know that my reality, my understanding of the purpose of all this chaotic multi-dimensionality, is not necessarily yours. We all have the infinite freedom to mash together the cosmic input and random messaging from the cosmos to create some sense of meaning and order. However true the lyrical profundity of “ I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together” rings, the fact remains that it is not that simple. Adding further testimony to the power of Linoleum, yesterday I had a charming family of three visit us for the dinner show. All rather ordinary but with the footnote that they we also here on Sunday. Yes, it was their second trip to watch Linoleum in two days! What does that tell ya? Did that happen with Everything, Everywhere, All at Once? No. Did it happen with CODA? No. Tar? No. Banshees? Feck no. But it happened with Linoleum. And you need to come see why. 

Here is the synopsis on Friday’s premiere of Moving On: Two old friends (sic) reconnect at a funeral and decide to extract revenge on the widower (Malcom McDowell) who exploited each of them several decades earlier. It has a 74% Tomatoemeter and a 74% audience rating from Rotten Tomatoes. It is rated R and runs a few minutes short of 90 minutes. It was written and directed by Paul Weitz, who also wrote another rather ribald comedy called America Pie. So it might surprise. Like a slice of pastry tested while blindfolded.

It has begun. Yes, our annual 2023 Renovation Fundraiser Extravaganza, aka, The Longest Day (so named because it will take place on Wednesday, June 21, the summer solstice and longest day of the year) has officially been successfully launched. It is moving upwards and outwards at a speed approaching Mach 5, or as they say at NASA, with all systems at go.  I will have more, much more, to say on this later, BUT FIRST, the schedule of cinematic events at the HLT this week and next:

All taking place, natch, at The Historic Lynwood Theatre in celebration of our 87th anniversary (technically July 3rd but there are enough already plenty of scheduled Island activities happening at that time)  to continue our renovation funding campaign to ask you, once a year, to help support your favorite local historical meeting place. Here are a few of the offerings we'll have on tap that glorious day:

1) The Black Box (not to be confused with the infamous Black Bird) is the rare opportunity for you to pick a movie you have always wanted to see up on our gigantic screen. Simply take your receipt from the cash register, flip it over and write on the back your favorite film. Also include contact info, e-mail or phone. Between now and June 1 the voting is open. At that time we'll tabulate the results and screen the top three vote getters on June 21, FREE! We we'll also stage a drawing, picking one of the receipts from a top hat, with the winner receiving a SIX MONTH pass for admission to the HLT. Wow. Cool? You bet it is.

2) Are you a musician? Wanna play a set on our stage on June 21? I have 15 hours of programming to fill, and I know the primal urge and soulful magnetic magic created when live music is presented. I might be the only who cares, but…………

We hit a milestone the other day, one that I feel deserves, if nothing else, a pat on the back. Acknowledging the fact that if is going to happen, the pat, it is most likely going to be self-administered, so here goes. Thank you, thank me. 

52 Episodes! Our hosting platform was kind enough to send along their congrats, as well as the monthly bill for said services, on Monday. Kind of a big deal. We could still be stuck on two. Regardless, here we are with another episode, this one almost guaranteed to hit all the markers. My guest today is our very own Librarian at the Bainbridge Island branch of the Kitsap Regional Library, Mr, John Fossett.

Should you be one of those Type-A personalities moving 90 miles an hour through the multiverse and a wearer of many hats, you will surely appreciate John’s workload. He is, as we discuss in the ‘cast, our aforementioned librarian, he hosts a Zoom class called The Veg Club, he is, as I am sure many of you know, the co-curator of the  Island Film Group, the MC of the popular Books on Tap show held at the TreeHouse, and the moderator of two local book clubs, the TBD group and one hosted by our own Eagle Harbor Book Co, For additional information on one or all of these terrific local creative social opportunities, you can stop at the Library and, under the guise of searching the extensive digital catalogue at the library for one of their many volumes on the art of filmmaking, ask him directly. Should you decide to take this approach, please tell him how great he was on the show. 

Please join us as we share stories, anecdotes, opinions and cover an amazing amount of ground in the relatively short time of 70 minutes. That is not a lot of time to change the world but we do discuss the art and importance of successful communication and answer the burning question that has plagued mankind since the introduction of the written word, “How do we make love last?”

If that isn’t enough clickbait for ya I don’t know what to say. Surely I am not the only one who cares.

Happy First Day of Spring!

As you are aware, among the many global traditions, or rites, of Spring, one stands head and shoulders above the rest: The Pacific Northwest, and in particular, Washington States’s Kitsap County and even more specifically, Lynwood Center, the town formerly known as Port Blakely, is the rite of…. Well, I’ll tell ya later as we must adhere to episodic tradition and give you the schedule foremost and first. Not to be one to break with traditions, here it is:

All right then, as you can see, we are holding over Champions another week. Oh lucky you! But that four-leaf clover hiding among the daffodils foretells of even greater events, as Return to Seoul premieres Friday at 4:30. Here is the synopsis:

“After being adapted by a French couple, a 25 year-old French woman returns to Korea, the country she was born in, for the first time. While there she decides to track down her biological parents – when her journey takes a surprising turn.” 

SPOILER: You will have to listen to the podcast to hear my take on this textual elevator pitch. Along the way, take a minute or so to play our top-rated didactic and captivating game: You are the Screenwriter.  Here is the assignment, should you choose to accept: Write the surprising turn. This is screenwriting ‘less than 101’ as the first rule of dramatic tragedy is to throw the monkey wrench at every opportunity, even if it means, gasp, making something up. For an example of surprising turns:

She is kidnapped (for ransom) by what appears to be pigmy banjo busking banshees. Or,

Her parents turn out to be, as determined by DNA testing by the village witch doctor,  Korean spies from Cambodia trading in kimchee and oxycodone. Or even,

While visiting the local record store, she bumps into another Tiny Tim lover who senses something odd about her necklace. 

Alas, we will simply have to wait until Friday to find out what Director, and co-writer Davey Chou has cooked up for us. Return to Seoul stars Park Ji-Min, is rated R for drug references, language and some suggestions of sex, runs 115 minutes and is distributed by Sony Classics. It currently holds a 97% Tomatometer ranking, which is pretty good considering it was released in December. Here is one critique:  “A funny, melancholy, music-laced film that surprised me from start to finish” Thank you John Powers of NPR for that. 

 A word on Champions before ending. I will admit that we had a run of dark comedies ending last year and starting this one. I can cite The Menu, Triangle of Sadness, and even my sentimental favorite The Banshees of Inisherin, as examples of movies that left patrons in varying degrees of perplexation. Champions is the anthesis of those. It is light-hearted and heart-warming while managing to stay reserved and sensitive (mostly) while dealing with themes that are often abused. It  is funny although at times uncomfortable in its daring story telling. And, yes, it too has a few surprises along the journey, as any good script will insure. 

It's a rite of Spring.
