We have a few special events to pass along. 

Two (only) special screenings of Casablanca. Yes, Rick and Ilsa are heading back our way for this pair of special event shows on Sunday, March 5 @ 1pm and Wednesday, March 8 @ 7pm. You can purchase tickets on our website, or take your chances and just show up -  leaving time enough to purchase popcorn and maybe a glass of Ratio:Rosso from Eleven Winery, of course.

On Thursday, March 16 the world famous Gothard Sisters will make their way from Ireland to our stage for a St. Paddys day concert of their award winning traditional Irish folk music. Tickets available at our company home page here. 

Two energetic kids at Bainbridge HS have teamed with an international consortium of Medical Professionals to present a fund-raiser for the purpose of supporting their cause. Our part will be hosting their FASHION SHOW! On Saturday, May 13 @ 2pm, we will light up the HLT with an event of spectacular proportions. You need to see this one to fully grasp the magnitude of their altruistic vision. More info and a podcast are in the works so please stay tuned for the details as they come available. 

Lastly today is updated news of the big (and I do mean BIG) annual one-day fund-raiser for, ta-da, us. Write this date down, enter it into your calendar and commit it to memory: Wednesday, June 21. Yes, it is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. It is also the date on which we will entertain the entire world with our festivities for 15 hours. Nine in the morning to midnight. That is 0900 - 0000. Films, an auction, music, food, more movies, special guests, drinks, fun, games and even more movies. All for the best cause imaginable, your Historic Lynwood Theatre. More, much more, on that every week as we roll it out.

My boss was right. EO is to The Fabelmans what ET was to, say, Plan Nine from Outer Space. I will explain later, because first we give you the nuts and bolts of the HLT machinery, e.g, what plays when.

All that being said, there is the exposition to tend to, which is script speak for more being said, or as we are mentored, more being shown. So, let's take a look.

Never in a million years would I dis Steven Spielberg for his creative acumen. His body of work, in my opinion, should entitle him to an Oscar every year. You can make up the category. But the dilemma I faced last week, with results changing on a nightly basis, was this: How to "stack" the two films we had been granted the license to screen.  Not having seen The Fabelmans in any degree other than the trailer it was my feeling that it should be the headliner and show after the matinee screening of EO. After all, in what universe would a donkey take top billing over Mr. Spielberg's semi-autographical coming of age story? So I scheduled it as such. Which lasted all of 12 hours before the Big Boss Jeff, called the Director of Marketing, the incredible Emily, who then called me at home to relay the message that we needed to change the billing and flip-flop the films, making EO the headliner. I was "perplexed", but, as any good soldier would, set about the carry out the orders. What is an entire day of revisions, right? As the week unfolded it became clearer to me why this had happened. I will share it with you without any possible spoilers. While The Fabelmans is terrific film, lovingly crafted by an undisputed master of the craft, it is also two and a half hours of self-indulgent homage to the innocence of youth matched against the intimidation and power of the beast known as Hollywood. It is David and Goliath on location where we all know the ending, David winning, or at least getting the horizon correctly framed. But.... while however a good cinematic experience Fabelmans is, EO is a great one. True, it contains a few unsettling sequences, but all add a necessary degree of truth and intrigue to the tale, filed with a breathtaking European eye for style and impact. Taken together, the sum of their respective parts and the emotional catharsis provided by each writer/director, points to EO as the winner of this round. Therefore, my boss was right. I stand corrected. Coming on Friday are a pair of films written and directed by women. If you listened to last week's podcast (and who hasn't?) you graphically heard the disparity that exists between male and female actors. We can call it day and night. The same holds true on the back side of the camera, the writers and directors. You already know that women directors were shutout of nominations for this years Academy Awards. Shameful. Friday we open with Fire of Love, an archival footage documentary about a couple of scientific lovers following their dream of capturing close up footage of active volcanoes, a calling that eventually claimed their lives as they filmed. Directed by Sara Dosa it is the story of Katja and Maurice Kraft, a couple whose lives are best described as utterly intrepid. Runs 98 minutes and rated PG.  Those would be the brass tacks, the down and dirty basic info. Just the facts on what and when we screen (at the where) of the Historic Lynwood Theatre. (In the heart of Lynwood Center should you be one of the hundreds of recent transplants from Chicago, Denver or San Jose needing an introduction.) In this welcoming regard, I volunteer offering (this week only) a free popcorn to new patrons on their virgin voyage to our humble but historic location. Flash me some ID or provide a GPS coordinate indicating your most recent duty station, and I'll add the aforementioned popcorn to your tab, on me.  This, as a welcoming gesture of our appreciation. Snobbery of any genre is strictly prohibited at the HLT!
 
 EO is a masterwork. Polish Writer and Director Jerzy Skolimowski, along with the seven mules who played the part of protagonist EO, have combined to toss some tasty cinematic magic our way. I asked it once last week and I'll ask it again today: If I was to award you with a 15 million dollar budget to produce a feature film about a sentient donkey traveling from Poland to Rome, how would you do that? What would his, EO's, story be? Mr. Skolimowski has risen to the challenge in spectacular form telling the tale of EO's take on the good, the bad, the joyous and the evil that comes from the hand and hearts of the human species. SEMI-SPOILER: We, mostly men, can be less evolved morally and ethically than the humble ass.
 
 You have three more screenings of The Whale, tonight, Tuesday's open caption, and Wednesday and Thursday before The Fabelmans hit town on Friday. EO stays around for another week.
 
 Lastly today, we published our latest podcast episode, number 120, yesterday, and I highly recommend giving it a listen. Hosting Mike and Ranger Sciacca, they the father and son bandleaders of the phenomenal local band of Hot Club Jazz impresario's Ranger and the Re-Arrangers fame, was an absolute treat. Mike and I have been friends and neighbors for over 35 years and I knew Ranger before he could walk, let along play a violin like Stephan Grapelli or Vassar Clements. In mentioning our HLT podcast mission statement of promoting local industry talent, they each rose to the occasion offering takes on the magical synergy between music and the movies. All for today folks, as always it has been my extreme pleasure hosting all the events that put the HLT at the center of the local arts and humanities scene. One last parting shot today over the bow of the film industry's model of contemporary revenue flow: I have concocted a solution to the financial woes that plague us. It will save Hollywood and the 40 Regal theatres (39 Regals and us) that last week filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and face immediate closure. To be clear Regal filed - not us. My genius plan is as simple as it is brilliant (if I do say so myself) but, like any good inducement to prompt immediate action (click bait) you will have to listen to this 'cast to learn its secret. Sorry.

Saturday nights in Lynwood Center are becoming something of which the International community of artists, filmmakers, poets, authors and musicians should take note. It am working the long weekend shift at The Historic Lynwood Theatre. We are screening Aronofsky's phenomenal adaptation of The Whale. It is reaching the halfway point so I step outside for a quick breath of fresh air.  And I hear it, again. This time not from across the street at the Marketplace but two doors down at Arnie's local hangout, The Tree House. I decide to take a peek through the steamy window to see who is producing the sweet sounds. With each step closer I get the feeling that I know who it is. Yup, my old pals Ranger and the Re-Arrangers. There is not an empty seat in the house and the joint is hoppin'. There is a couple on the tiny dance floor wrapped in each other's arms despite the fact that the song has ended and front- man Ranger Sciacca is reminding us that it is Django Reinhardt's birthday they are celebrating, and also that CDs are available for a donation of any denomination. Satisfied I hustle back to the HLT to make sure nobody needs popcorn or a refill of their beer, confident that the dancing couple will soon have competent musical accompaniment. I also make a mental note to contact Ranger and Mike to invite them to the podcast.

The next day I do and today they carved and hour from their hectic schedules to visit. Here it is. Along with the below snippet from their Rangerswings.com website that I lifted as a more polished introduction. This was a fun one. Mike and I have been friends and neighbors for 35 years and I have also known Ranger since before he could walk, let along play the violin with such aplomb. Enjoy. 

Ranger and the “Re-Arrangers” evoke the spirit of a Paris cafe and the raucous energy of a Romani campsite with their version of Hot Club Swing.  “At the heart of their sound is Ranger Sciacca's sweet violin playing… his sense of melody and daring improvisations” (World Rhythm).  The band’s repertoire includes swing standards, traditional European melodies, the music of Django Reinhardt, and Ranger's unique originals. 

 THE BAND   Ranger and his father Michael formed the band in 2006, after a pilgrimage to the world’s foremost Hot Club Swing event, the Django Reinhardt festival in Samois Sur Seine, France. The band has now released 4 CDs and performs over 100 times each year at music festivals, concerts in the park, swing dances, weddings and events of all sorts. 

Past Shows have included: Edmonds Concert in the Park, Seattle Art Museum, Djangofest Northwest, Best of the Northwest Arts Festival, Highline Classic Jazz Festival, Ethnic Fest Tacoma, and Vin du Lac Winery (Chelan)

I feel like Charlie today. He taught on-line English during the pandemic, while today I do a shallow bellyflop into Science, Technology, Taxonomy and Gastronomy. All for the similar end result of passing along sometimes trivial and sometimes tremendous, information that hopefully might resonate a chord inside your head, heart or soul, and preferably all three.  In todays 'cast we open with THE WHALE, playing at 4:30 and 7 today thru Thursday, by taking a historical glance back at the evolution of the AR, aspect ratio. This is relevant because the Director of THE WHALE, Darren Aronofsky, chose to use the flat Academy Ratio of 4-3 (actually 1.33-1 in a 1.85 container) to present his film instead of the industry standard 16.9 - 1, or scope. You will have to take a listen to today's 'cast to find out why. Here is the week's showtimes:

After the cram course on AR's we talk about using this format as a means to the end of taking a stage play to the big screen as an adaption. A film shot in a single indoor location is simply wasting space with 16.9, because we don't need to see any further extensions of Charlie's living room, with kitchen and front door always present. Aronofsky, along with his DP and Cinematographer, bring us into the room as his lens constantly maneuvers thru a series of dolly shots tracking the action, dialogue, in order to put us in the best possible viewing location. It is a treat to behold! And Brenden Fraser rises to the occasion as only a Cornish Institute of the Arts grad can. This despite him spending 95% of his time confined to his chair on wheels or the couch. You will have to come and see exactly what the boatload of praise both he, Aronofsky, and the entire ensemble cast are landing in their Pequod sized boxy boat. 

Then from Science and Technology we move slightly down the hall to the Taxonomy and Culinary Arts Department where we introduce you to the star of Friday's premiere, EO. EO is a donkey. A Jack. Male. Not a Jenny, female, as we watched in The Banshees. Additionally, we know that a Mule is the offspring of a Jack and a female horse, a Mare and a Hinny is a hybrid of a female Donkey, a Jenny and a male horse, a Stallion. Got that? Because there's more. Burro is Espanol for Mule. Correspondingly then, a Burrito in this usage is not something you order at Miguelito's Cantina but a small Donkey. Because pack Mules are so good a hauling gear, supplies, water and whatever else needs to be moved from point A to point B, it makes perfect sense then, as they are fully loaded, so should a corn or flour tortilla be packed with yummy things to eat, si? Miguel even honors a wide-eyed Burrito next door by giving a place of honor hanging on a wall behind the bar. EO is the sound of the Donkey looking at us and the world. 

And that is what Writer and Director Jerzy Skolimowski does with this formidable challenge. If you had a 15-million-dollar production budget to make a movie seen through the eyes of a sentient Donkey, how would you do it?  Winnie the Pooh,  Eeore and AA Milne have all been here and done that anthropomorphically, so the Polish master chose another artistic look at the challenge. I eagerly look forward to watching his award-winning effort.  And I hope you do too.

Do you feel that 2001 A Space Odyssey is one of the ten best films of all time? Is Arthur C. Clark among the greatest of science fiction writers? Does Richard Strauss write stirring music? Is there a place in Rock N Roll for classical covers? 

If you answered yes to any of the above, please read on with the intent to listen. Because I have connected some dots that I think you might find interesting. It has been noted that there are four simple components necessary in a film to be of top ten caliber, or top one hundred frankly. For inclusion they must have:

1)      Technical proficiency

2)      Storytelling proficiency

3)      The entertainment factor

4)      Artistic merit

The more of these one can amass into one’s film, the better one’s chances of recognition, industry or otherwise. Fair?

The Whale stars Brendan Fraser, he a Cornish College of the Arts grad, and is directed by the amazing Daren Aronofsky. Among Aronofsky’s accomplishments are the gems Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, The Wrestler and Pi. Mr. Fraser has an equally as impressive a bio having acted in such fan faves as Encino Man, Bedazzled, Gods and Monsters and Blast From the Past. Here is the elevator pitch:

“A reclusive and obese English teacher attempts to connect with his estranged teenaged daughter as his last chance at redemption.”

 The Woman King stars Viola Davis, she of The Help and her award-winning performance for Best Supporting Actress in 2017’s Fences, with Denzel W. The Woman King was directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, a graduate of the acclaimed UCLA Film School who also ran track in her spare time, even qualifying for the PAC-12 championships in the long jump! Naturally I was not surprised to learn that she allowed - fostered I suspect, the actors to do their own stunts in the action adventure. Gina also directed Love and Basketball and was the first Black woman to direct a Super Heroes Movie. This is an Oscar encore presentation with three shows only Fri, Sat and Sun. Please make your plans early, we may run short on popcorn. 

Here is the log line:

“A historical epic inspired by true events that took place in the Kingdom of Dohmey, one of the most powerful states in Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries, where an all-female unit of elite warriors protects and defends the kingdom with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen.” Whoa, no wonder the tag line states that, “Some things are worth fighting for.”

 There ‘ya go folks. I will leave you with a quote from Arthur C. Clark (you get bookend quotes from Mr Clark on the podcast):

Everyone anticipates the first episode of their favorite TV Drama. And here we are with ours. Season Two, Episode One. Ye-Haw. Yes, this is a podcast and not a TV series, but the concept is the same; New season, new stories. Let's roll. 

After the storm comes usually comes the calm. Once the bad guys have been sent up-river, the mess cleaned up and the case closed, the good guys have a chance to reflect, review and respond accordingly. The last episode is supposed to wrap all this up with the mission accomplished and the lessons learned. We will live to fight another day (be back for the next season). Do you remember, as I do, the film endings that seem to adequately satisfy our craving for closure and catharsis? Do you recall those that close in on the protagonist's face leaving that emotion as the only clue to what they are thinking? The score adds another layer of complexity as our hero considers the events we have all just shared. Was there growth? Did the good guys win? Was justice served? Did we learn anything important? What can we, the collective we as humanity, take from all this excitement and adventure? 

One of my favorite closing scenes of this variety was George Cloney in the back of a New York cap closing a terrific tale of corporate greed, corruption and the morals and ethics behind our losing battle for a sustainable and healthy environment, in Michael Clayton. I now have another to add to this short list: Olivia Coleman's slight and swift closing grin in Empire of Light, as she affirms her hope and faith in herself, her community and in the Empire Theatre itself, where it all happened. Yes. Watch it closely. A tip of the cap to Olivia, Sam Mendes and Sir Roger Deakins for pulling this bit of magic off so cleanly. 

Empire of Light plays just three more days. Tonight's OCAP on Seniors Night, Wednesday and Thursday at 4:25 and 6:45.

On Friday we premiere two new films. Eternal Daughter, with Tilda Swinton and Till the End with Alexandria Ocasio Cortex, aka AOC. There is less than three degrees of separation between that pair of new films and the above-mentioned Michael Clayton.  Prizes awarded to fans of the HLT for correct answers, as always!

How many of those did you see at the HLT? (You can go ahead and sing that). Which is your personal favorite? Does one, or two, stand out as films that: A) Made you think? B) Made you laugh or cry? C) Made you grateful for the experience? 

Please excuse my youthful exuberance (?) as I unabashedly admit to being so moved by almost all of them - at one time or another along their respective timelines. However, as advertised above, I promised a rating, so why not follow the established format of the big shots in Hollywood and select what we consider to be the 'best of' those 43 films? Our version of the Academy Awards, now in its 95th year, and arguably the most glamorous, important and recognized celebration of the movies known to man, all captured by a symbolic figure named Oscar. We'll call our awards The Lynies. And this is the first annual. Celebrate with us.

You may disagree, I know a few of you didn't like its bleak humor or the 'fingers' scene, but for my money those points only enhanced its purpose and steadfast resolve to dramatically tell the story. There was no shyness to its storytelling. And also, to paraphrase Padraic, "there are some things you don't move past. And I think that's a good thing."

Sam Mendes and Sir Roger Deakins return for another week at the HLT with their beautiful ode to a bygone era of 35mm films, a nation in turmoil and two people at demographic polar extremes of each other. Naturally they meet in the Empire theatre and begin a relationship with the grand art deco masterpiece as confidant. With conflict on all fronts, they navigate their way through the minefield of early 80's England and into the reality of their own power and potential. If only.........

I will be releasing the results of my informal polling on Friday wherein all 46 films that graced our big screen over the course of 2022 are critiqued and rated. I will break them down into several categories and offer my humble opinion in Academy-like style. To kick off this soon-to-be-annual extravaganza I will at this time reveal the five films that share the dubious distinction of being at the very bottom of the list. These films, while I applaud their efforts, failed the one true test of any story: Capturing Interest.

Whew, that was fun! 2022. Back in April we launched our podcast. The vision was to use the platform as a way to reach the audience that had become accustomed to tuning in every Tuesday to hear the golden pipes of CEO Jeff Brien announce the shows and times at the Historic Lynwood. Unfortunately those days, like a host of other things we had assumed would last forever, didn't. We decided to risk the relatively small start-up cost and the glaring lack of available talent willing to work for peanuts, or popcorn, I should say, and launch a digital version. And since it was, after all, my idea, when asked who was going to act as host, engineer, producer, editor and marketing manager, I, without flinching, said, "I am." 

Accepting the new assignment on a warm Wednesday in April, I ordered a mixer, a couple of Sure SM47s and searched the interweb for a platform host. The next day I scheduled my first guest, my boss of course. And the rest, as they say, is political science, er, history. 

Many, many months later we find ourselves once again hanging popcorn strings and mistletoe. We also have almost thirty episodes of the podcast, which now includes the aforementioned Coming Attractions addition, in the can. I decided to use the source material and re-purpose the media into a "best of" format and have some fun cherry picking the juicy quotes, outrageous predictions, tales of the road and gems of wisdom that our guests shared with us in Season One. Why not, we're all family right? 

And here it is. Over two hours' worth of said highlights. Highlights in my opinion anyway.
