THE COMMENTARY:

Yes, we are a day late this week, but hey, you got one yesterday specifically for our Holiday Specials that included a swell video as well as the standard fare. In any event, this week officially kicks off the fun and festivities as you can see from the final entry above. You read that correctly, FRI DEC 20 - DIE HARD @ 9P. YIPPEE-KI-YAY (MF). But first the synopsis on our pair of features coming up on Friday.

THE RETURN. This is one of several I pinched from RT and while I think it sums up the basic premise, I would like to add a few observations afterwords. 

Absolutely stunning perfomances by Ralph Fiennes and Juliet Binoche! Fiennes really captured the sadness and disillusionment of a man at war for many years. His portrayal of Odysseus was mezmerizing.The pacing of the movie was flawless and relentlentless, too. An absolute masterpiece!

To which I will add, that while an intimate study of a soldier returning home with severe PTSD, fails to serve the broader audience who never made it past the second book of either of Homer’s illustrious poems (in heroic hexameter)  leaving it flatly on the table for the scholars among us. Who all seemed to enjoy it. 

ANORA. Rated R, 136 min. I will give you the synopsis and you can decide how close to current events it is. 

The dramedy follows Anora (Mikey Madison), an Uzbek-American stripper whose boss often sets her up with Russian-speaking clients. One night, she meets Vanya (Mark Eidelstein), the wealthy young son of a Russian oligarch who pays to make her his girlfriend for the week. Unexpectedly, the two fall in love and elope - but the fairytale is threatened when Vanya's parents find out.

On the positive side, I was asked twice last week if we plan on getting this one, so at the very least we should have a couple of couples in attendance over the weekend. Yay. I should order some Vodka. 

DIE HARD. It is a Christmas Movie. Coming in at Number 11 on the RT GOAT list, besting several that have become standard Holiday viewing, ELF, EDWARD SCISSORHANDS and A CHRISTMAS STORY among them. I can honestly say that ski film pioneer Warren Miller would turn a jealous shade of green while watching this one. Josh and crew have outdone themselves with MAD LOVE theatrics so stunningly outrageous one has to wonder if it was all somehow CGI. During filming atop an angry mountain in inhospitable weather conditions that they had to abandon a helicopter because it wouldn’t fly in this situation. THAT, dear friends is extreme. See what all the buzz is about and take a chance at winning a pair of Praxis skis. Josh will also be on hand to answer any questions you may have.

Monday, December 23 at 8pm. THE TOTAL EXPERIENCE GOSPEL CHOIR ALUMNI. Formed in 1973 at Franklin High in Seattle, the choir has become an internationally known gospel singing ensemble. The alumni presents a holiday inspired special event that carries the ‘do not miss’ label. We think their soulful renditions of gospel and holiday classics, in our cathedral-like auditorium will inspire one and all. 

NEW YEARS EVE, Tuesday, Dec 31, 5pm - Midnight. We advised you up front that this was going to be special, and here is the fabulous finale. The lineup: 

5pm - Opening remarks and introduction.

5:30 - THE RAINIER BEER MOVIE. A labor of love documentary by Isaac Olson and Tacoma’s infamous Peterson Brothers, RAINIER: A BEER ODYSSEY, celebrates the iconic and groundbreaking Rainier Beer TV commercials which ran from 1974 to 1987. Almost too much fun, and yes, we will have a happy hour. Post screening Q&A with filmmakers.

8-10 - Local roots/folk/rock heroes HONEY MOON takes the stage for a set of tunes sure to tickle your fancy. Kitley and Co blend a traditional sound with creative hooks and fearless creative variations, crossing genres with hand-clapping gusto. 

10-Midnight - The HLT welcomes back BATUKA, the Santana inspired combo that lit up our room back in January. Frontmen JOHN HURAL and MALO CASTRO guarantee to make this evening a magical New Year’s Eve to remember. And yes, we will offer champaign as a run-up to 2025.

A REAL PAIN. Pivoting gut-punching drama and whip-smart comedy around a career-best turn from Kieran Culkin, A REAL PAIN is an amazing treat of the highest caliber. Charlotte Simmons - We Got This Covered.

Jesse Eisenberg has made a film that is emotionally powerful and unbelievably relatable while Kieran Culkin delivers an exhaustingly mesmerizing performance loaded with depth and relentless magnetism. Chris Sabin - Bounding into Comics.

Eisenberg pulled off a minor miracle here. He melded the mismatched buddy road trip with an uncomfortable foreign land excursion, with—dare I say it—a Holocaust drama with more than impressive results while wearing four hats and keeping his ego in check. Michael Clark - Epoch Times.

THE RETURN. After 20 years Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca, where he finds his wife held prisoner by suitors vying to be king and his son facing death at their hands. To win back his family and all he has lost, Odysseus must rediscover his strength. Like asap.

Reminiscent of another Pasolini, Pier Paolo, in its minimalist take on a classic story, the film relies mainly on the elemental power of Fiennes and Binoche, both suitably haunting as the long-separated lovers who have lapsed into emotional despair. Frank Scheck - The Hollywood Reporter.

In the same spirit of how Joel Coen made The Tragedy of Macbeth minimalist, THE RETURN strips the journey of Odysseus and Penelope down to its bare bones. Kevin Lee - Awards Watch.

HLT #143 - MALO CASTRO

We welcome the talented and personable hombre voted to the Best Of list of percussionists in Kitsap County and a regular in the musical lineup of artists performing here at the Historic Lynwood Theatre, Mr Harry Malo Castro.

As many before him, Malo arrived to the Great Pacific Northwest courtesy of Uncle Sam and his cadre of Navy personnel. Stationed at Sub Base Bangor and later working at PSNS, Malo, a native Puerto Rican, has mastered many trades. From karate and boxing, to salsa dancing and to the assembly of several Latino-themed musical combos, including the headliners of our New Years Eve bash on Dec 31 this year, BATUKA, Malo has the chops to make magical moments memorable.

We had the pleasure of spending an hour talking about all this yesterday, and we are pleased to present the podcast that we hope you will enjoy - and perhaps even learn a few of the secrets behind what makes Latino music, and Santana in particular, so popular worldwide. Whew! And to say nothing of our upcoming special events. Therefor, The Commentary:

SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE, contrary to its title, is actually about one HUGE THING. That being, an oppressive, bullying and hypocritical institution, and one man’s reconciliation with his past. If you saw CONCLAVE you know of whom I speak. No spoilers here. Cillian Murphy is his usual brilliant self surrounded by a supporting cast damaged, conflicted and fearful of their fervernt faith in the omnipotent church. It is Ireland in 1958 after all. Adapted from the award-winning novella by Claire Keegan. 

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB. A passionate labor of love from legendary filmmaker Wim Wenders and producer/guitarist Ry Cooder. Chronicles the rich and diverse music scene in Cuba, which was, prior to this production, in critical danger of extinction at the hands of Fidel Castro. A group of legendary Cuban musicians, some as old as their nineties, were brought together by Ry Cooder to record a CD. In this film, we see and hear some of the songs being recorded in Havana. There is also footage from concerts in Amsterdam and New York City's Carnegie Hall. In addition, many of the individual musicians talk about their lives in Cuba and about how they got started in music. Nominated for Best Documentary Editing in 2000. This is Silver Anniversary. 

* AND… to complete the Diner and a Movie package, next door at Miguelito’s, Miguel will launch two new themed dishes in concert with the films pair of screenings, a tantalizing RIBEYE RANCHERO and a traditional PAELLA VALENCIA. They will also stay open for this super supper special after the nightcap screening on Friday. 

A REAL PAIN. Mismatched cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin) reunite for a tour through Poland to honor their beloved grandmother. The adventure takes a turn when the odd-couple's old tensions resurface against the backdrop of their family history. Funny, at times hysterical, poignant and powerful, A REAL PAIN, is the perfect Holiday film to pick up and perk your spirits. 

Another huge round of applause for everyone who visited with us Sunday afternoon to experience the Erich Cannon produced epic outdoor documentary, THE COLUMBIA RIVER CANOE PROJECT. Writer/director/river pilot ROBERT LESTER was with us (albeit late as a result of a miscommunication on my part necessitating him to run from the ferry terminal to the HLT, and hence miss the intro - but making it in time for the most lively Q & A). Please give this one a look when it comes to your streaming service early in 2025.

The Commentary:

Story line: A couple find out that three of their their children have an inoperable degenerative eye disorder, and the clock is rapidly ticking towards their eventual blindness. Undaunted, they decided to see the world’s most beautiful spots while they can. Heartwarmingly spectacular scenery and family bonding as only National Geographic can capture. Bring the whole family.

BOGEY: LIFE COMES IN FLASHES. This is the first official feature documentary to explore the remarkable life and career of Hollywood legend Humphrey Bogart. Featuring never seen before footage and centering around the (many) women in his storied life. For the true cinephile, I have already said enough. 

SMALL THINGS LIKE THESE.  In 1985 devoted father Bill Furlong discovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent and uncovers shocking truths of his own. Stars Cillian Murphy, he of Oppenheimer fame, should you have forgotten. 

THE COLUMBIA RIVER CANOE PROJECT. ONE SHOW ONLY!!!  This project follows Robert Lester and Braxton Mitchel as they canoed 1300 miles over 55 days from the continental divide to the Pacific Ocean. The project follows their long and tough journey while focusing awareness and attention to the health of the river basin and how dramatically the use of the river has changed since the native peoples who lived with and on these waters.

NEXT WEEK: Thanksgiving Cuban Culture Celebration. Here is the line up: Thursday  Nov 28, Thanksgiving we help launch two new big reds from Rolling Bay winery, their TEMPRANILLO AND GRAZIANO. Friday, Nov 29 we’ll screen THE BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB, at 4:30 & 6:30, Before or after the screenings you can walk the twenty paces to MIGUELITO’S and sample the two dishes Miguel has created specifically for this event, a tantalizing RIBEYE RANCHERO and a heavenly PAELLA VALENCIA. They will also extend their hours to offer post concert dinners Saturday night. Because, as all that wasn’t enough, on Saturday night THE MALO CASTRO QUINTET will preform their tribute to the BVSC. Several ticket options are available: A pass for all three days, just the movie or just the concert, or both movie & music.  

NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION. We’re pulling all the stops with THREE acts starting at 7 and ending at midnight on 12.31.24. We’ll feature two comedy acts for openers, local favorites HONEY MOON and then headliners BATUKA, to ring in the new year. Tickets go on-sale next week.

The Commentary:

Big, BIG thanks to everyone who came out for BIFF2 over the weekend. We watched some great Indy films, with many directors, producers, actors and crafts people in attendance all sharing their stories and artistic points of view. Nice work Charlie, can’t wait for number three next year. Please notice that we have added an additional matinee on Monday for Veteran’s day at 1400 hrs. 

CONCLAVE will win Best Picture. Ralph Best Actor and Edward Berger Best Director. If you haven’t seen it yet, you have FOUR more days to do so. I am quite sure you have heard nothing but rave reviews for this one and I am here to tell you that they all ring true.

EXHIBITING FORGIVENESS. Should you be unaware, one of our most cherished line items in the HLT Mission Statement reads: “To support and encourage local artists in Film, Music and the Arts.” This one takes that to another level altogether. Local legend Jherek Biscoff is the genius behind the score for this beguiling drama. Utilizing his paintings to find freedom from his past, a Black artist on the path to success is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, a recovering addict desperate to reconcile. Together, they struggle and learn that forgetting might be a greater challenge than forgiving. This special presentation is the Fall fund raiser for BIMA, where Jherek’s brother Korum is Deputy Director. Both will be on hand Nov 17 to discuss the making of the film and the back story that started on Bainbridge Island several decades ago. Tickets are available here.

THE COMMENTARY.

CONCLAVE is a throwback piece of cinematic artistry. Beautifully shot with a black, white and red palate, perfect in hue and tone, it reminds me of the BIG blockbusters from Hollywood’s Golden Era. As predicted last week, I see three ‘bests’ for this gem, Film, Adapted Screenplay and Actor, in addition to definite noms for Direction, Cinematography and Sound Design. Want an eye roll? One of my trusted critique sites, and their accompanying comments page, offers the following example of the Dunning-Kruger effect on film critique: “It was mostly good but ruined by another woke Hollywood ending”. And these people want to dismantle the Dept. of Education, morality and ethics evidently a bridge too far. 

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL. Show-runner Charles Poekel launches BIFF 2 this week at four Island venues. We being the epicenter, or eye of the storm. Here is our part in the celebration:

Big Halloween thanks to everyone who came out for our annual scare-fest and watched THE SHINING.

Upcoming special events: BAINBRIDGE ISLAND MUSEUM OF ART (BIMA) screening of EXHIBITING FORGIVENESS on NOV 17 @ 6:30. Jherek Bischoff will be up from LA to host the event along with his brother, Korum, who is Deputy Director of BIMA. Jherek composed and played the score for the film and both will interact with the audience for a post-screening Q&A. Tickets can be found right here. 

BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB Celebration over Thanksgiving. Here is the lineup: THU NOV 28 is Cuban Night at the HLT. We will offer Cuban specialties as well as our usual faire. On FRI NOV 29 we will screen BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB twice at times to be announced next week, and then as the coupe de gras THE MALO QUINTET will take the stage for a tribute to BVSC. Tickets will be available on Tuesday. Which is a rather important day, because as well as tickets going o/s for our big Thanksgiving fest, it is ELECTION DAY. We did four special politically themes events over the last few months to prep for this one. Most of you have already cast your ballots, but for those who are either asleep on the fence, still undecided or about to switch party allegiance, here is my handy Election Day cheat sheet:

When a (D) follows any candidate’s name fill in that box with a black or blue pen. Because character counts and Democracy is light years ahead of a Fascist Dictatorship. 

We hold this truth to be self evident. It Can’t Happen Here. CORRECT?

“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in a flag and carrying a cross.” (Incorrectly) attributed to Sinclair Lewis from his marvelous work, IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE. 

The Commentary: Calling it. Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor. CONCLAVE is the film, Peter Staughan (and Robert Harris) are the writers and Ralph Finnes is the actor. I will also toss in Volker Bertelmann for his electrifying score and Stephane Fontaine for his cinematography as nominees. You heard it here first! Frankly, I haven’t seen a film this magnificent since Shindler’s List, nor a script so tight since The Sting. If you are a fan of the art of movie making and enjoy an intellectual challenge amid an ever building dramatic conclusion, with as diabolical a plot twist as anything Umberto Eco or Steven King could concoct, CONCLAVE is for you. Six stars and four thumbs up. Bravo to Director Edward Berger for a soon to be classic.

IT CAN’T HAPPEN HERE. I talked my old pal Steve Stollee into bringing his latest play to the HLT. We wanted to raise the curtain before Nov 5 for obvious politically influenced reasons, finally settling on Sunday at 11. Despite the fact that Steve will be coming off shoulder surgery the Wilson Milam rework of Sinclair Lewis' masterful opus will be our first attempt at a live performance stage play.  

BIFF. Charles Poekel’s sophomore epic returns to the HLT, as well as three other Island locations, Nov 7-10. Included in our screenings will be Rachel Noll James’ INHERITANCE making its Island debut on Friday @ 7. Tickets on-sale at here.

EXHIBITING FORGIVENESS. Local maestros Jherek and Korum Bischoff will jointly present the film and then host a Q&A. It is a fund raiser for BIMA, promising to be a festive and fascinating evening. Tickets right here.

HLT PODCAST #142 - KORUM BISCHOFF

What a privilege to host such talent on our show. Friday with local, soon to be famous, filmmaker and author ANISA ASHABI, and yesterday’s doubleheader with filmmaker and writer BOBBY ROE and then the Deputy Director of BIMA, and musical extraordinaire KORUM BISHCOFF. I’ll tell you what, if those three don’t pick up your creative interest, I don’t know what, or who will. The big important news up front:

I know what you’re thinking (with my best Dirty Harry voice); When do tickets go on-sale? They’re on-sale now. Go to the ticket window at BIMA and reserve yours. As I mention in the ‘cast, this will be a sell out. Therefore and henceforth, let’s get you a quick bio of Korum. Two decades in the nonprofit world—where budgets are tight and flexibility is key—have given Korum the opportunity to gain a wide range of skills in marketing, branding, public relations, management, and event production.

He started his career in arts non-profits at One Reel, working as graphic designer for Bumbershoot, Teatro ZinZanni, and Summer Nights at the Pier. Over time, Korum built up his marketing chops and became Marketing Manager for Teatro ZinZanni where, when not working on the legendary show, he was part of a small team that developed new after-hours projects for the circus tent and developed its education programs. After nearly twelve years, he left the project to become Director of Communications & Events for Bloedel Reserve before finding his way to BIMA which he feels is where he was always meant to be. At BIMA, Korum oversees Marketing & Communications, Cultural & Community Programs, Digital Media & Online Programs, Visitor Experience, and the Museum Store.

Fun to know: Outside of the 9-5, Korum plays drums for Grammy-nominated family music band Recess Monkey, funk and soul extravaganza WurliPop, and his studio projects Western Arrow and The Phantom Years. He has also played with or alongside David Byrne, Jon Hendricks, The Dead Science, Grady Tate, his brother Jherek and many others. For his work as a musician, community organizer, and educator, Korum was the first recipient of the Amy Award for Emerging Artists.

All that as back story goes for a great outline for a lively and entertaining podcast. Listen for yourself and hear.
