THE COMMENTARY.

COUP. Now that I have an understanding of the movie’s theme, we can start calling it COO. Last week, having not seen the trailer, I called it coup several times knowing not if it was about the alarming shortage of affordable chicken housing, or, more interestingly, a group of surfers from Redondo Beach faithfully restoring Grandpa’s ’32 Duce Coupe. Language can be like that. Here is the synopsis for COUP from the critic’s consensus over at RT, A satire that keeps its knives sharpened, Coup! is a satisfying and swift meal served up with a sly Peter Sarsgaard performance as a garnish. Sounds yummy. 

KNEECAP. Again from Rotten Tomatoes, where it hold a 94% audience rating, When fate brings Belfast schoolteacher JJ into the orbit of self-confessed 'low life scum' Naoise and Liam Og, the needle drops on a hip hop act like no other. Rapping in their native Irish language, KNEECAP fast become the unlikely figureheads of a Civil Rights movement to save their mother tongue. But the trio must first overcome police, paramilitaries and politicians trying to silence their defiant sound -- whilst their anarchic approach to life often makes them their own worst enemies. In this fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic KNEECAP play themselves, laying down a global rallying cry for the defense of native cultures. Think I might like this one. 

PAIN & PEACE. Has been rescheduled to October.

I will draw it up in the huddle for you: 1) Meet up at Ft Ward, run, walk, trot or sprint a custom designed 5K course. 2) Head down the hill to the HISTORIC LYNWOOD THEATRE for some post event refreshment, and watch a free (themed) movie. 3) Hear a few words from Greg on the importance of the upcoming elections.  4) Go home and shower. Our guest today is the Co-owner of Bainbridge Island’s own ELEVEN WINERY, Alana Mignano. We brought Alana on the show today to talk about the largest winery, by production, on the Island, its history and their sponsorship of our upcoming GODFATHER FESTIVAL which begins a mere four days from today. An added bonus is that Alana has lived a half-mile from us since her parents migrated here when she was eight. She is a 2007 graduate of BHS, attended both he UW and Seattle Institute of the Arts and has been with Eleven since 2011, staring out as what Eleven so aptly names the position as a ‘Happiness Engineer” and working her way to ownership. We discuss the big upcoming Labor Day Weekend GODFATHER festival, their sponsorship thereof, the history of the winery and of course, movies in general. The commentary:

It is customary to begin the commentary with gratitude. Or at least it should be. Effective immediately, it will be. Because LOVE NEEDS ACTION, TRUST NEEDS PROOF AND SORRY NEEDS CHANGE, We witnessed all three last night a the Port Townsend crew took over the HLT last night with their incredible DANCING with the DEAD event. In a truly awesome and unique display of advanced community, I stood aghast in the rear of the auditorium and watched 150 people chant OM, stretching both souls, spirits and shoulders towards our starry, starry ceiling. It was a fab evening.

HOW TO COME ALIVE with Norman Mailer. Five words sum this one up. DO NOT MISS THIS ONE. Whether you are a seasoned Mailer fan or about to become one, this snappy little doc comes alive in every way. It is clever, graphic, introspective and outgoing, capturing the persona and message of the (sometimes) gentleman once called America’s greatest living author. This one rocks.

THE GODFATHER FEST. Muscles its way into the HLT on Friday to start its Labor Day Weekend run. We have specials. Boy, do we. For starters,  thirty minutes before each screening we’ll stage VINO WITH VITO, a Happy Hour sponsored by Eleven Winery. Two bucks off a glass of their delicious Ratio:Rosso blend, which has earned its way to become our rosso de casa, house red. Then, we’ll hold a raffle (entered with your ticket purchase) for one of, an Eleven cap or T-shirt, a gift certificate from The Marketplace or one from the Tree House. PAIN AND PEACE. This is the second in our new MOVIES THAT MATTER series, hosted and produced by Mindy Anderson. This extraordinary documentary is the saga of the victim of a heinous hate crime. The twist is that instead of vowing revenge on the perp, our protagonist actually responds with forgiveness, love and compassion. Cast and Crew will be here to share their stories.

COMMENTARY

ENDS with US. I am quite confident that you have already committed to one polar extreme or the other with this one, so nothing I could say would, most likely, sway your opinion. Revenue’s at the box hit 100 million on Thursday so people everywhere are flocking to see it. Just not here. My only guess as to why, is I wonder if it might be considered somehow beneath us. Yes, no?

HOW TO COME ALIVE*, with Norman Mailer. Immediately after my initial viewing of the audacious trailer, I made a note to see if a copy of one of his over 30 books is available at the Library. In audio format. This, instead of a hardbound copy, simply to have some context prior to Friday’s open, because the odds of getting through a book, busy as I am, are less than zero. And I like listening to books on tape. Right now I am on the final disc of ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST, and I will tell you what, it is like reading the book and watching the film all over again. Absolutely awesome, completely horrific and a masterclass in building tension from Mr Kesey. Wonder if there are any dots connecting Norman Mailer to Randall Patrick McMurphy. 

THE GODFATHER FESTIVAL. I was at a dinner party once and as we hit a conversational dull point, I asked someone what their favorite movie of all time is. I got verbally attacked by that someone’s Jewish lawyer hubby as he shot back, incredulously, “What kind of a questions is THAT? What is YOUR favorite?” I guess he was thinking I was trying to trap or embarrass his SO, and was acting heroic in defending her, dunno. But when I instantly answered GODFATHER II, he turned mute as we began a comedic rendition of its legendary, classic lines (starting, of course, with Luca Brazi sleeps with the fishes). To this day, that story, and this film remain etched in the stone of my heart. We have a pair of sponsors on board, one for vino and the other pizza, meaning the giveaways and happy hours will accompany the big screen experience of living the saga of La Familia Corleone. You don’t want to miss this. Labor Day weekend.

COMMENTARY.

IT ENDS WITH US. I think Blake Lively is fabulous. She talks like an autumn breeze and walks like a willow tree. As much as I adore the wind and love trees of all varieties, too much of them, too close to them or lost in a forest of them, is emotionally claustrophobic. Having a point of reference is crucial to any plot, thickening or otherwise, and intimacy, when used to enhance emotional involvement, is magical. But keeping the hand-held camera in that forest for longer than necessary is indulgent and excessive. It is why we have the establishing shot. It answers the question, where, exactly, are we? I was just as lost in the opening scene as I was in the last. Maybe I should buy a compass and give it another try. I think the issue of domestic violence needs more discussion. Lot’s more. Keeping it hidden in the forest is dark, troubling and weird. Addressing it is the light, the solution and the path of peace. 

JOIN or DIE. From the scholarly and genius mind of Prof Robert Putnam, this thesis on humanity should be required viewing for anyone wishing to one day become an adult. A responsible adult. A responsible adult who also cares passionately about his or her community. Putnam coined the popular term social equity. Which is another way of saying, with credit to John & Paul, that the love you take is equal to the love you make. BI Council member John Quitslund came to the HLT on one of his many movie-going outings, with a tip. He had read about the book/movie from a NY Times feature article and thought it might have some relevance for Islanders. I did some research, found the distributor and dropped them a line. A day later we had a licensing deal and media en-route. From there we thought a screening and discussion might be a winning ticket. And we remain hopeful. Tickets are available now.

GODFATHER FESTIVAL. Labor Day weekend. On the short list of GOAT films, greatest of all time, any such lineup is a bad joke without one, two, or all of these epic masterworks from legendary director Francis Ford Coppola. It is truly an honor to have the opportunity to screen them all over these four days.

The Commentary.

TOUCH. 121 minutes, rated R. Here is one of the many critiques , this one from Jeff Ewing at Collider, on TOUCH, written and directed by Icelandic filmmaker Balthazaar Kormakur. It's a film that subtly reminds the audience to slow down, be present, and enjoy what one has, because it can be gone in an instant, while also encouraging hope. It's a beautiful cinematic journey and one not to be missed.

IT ENDS WITH US. Colleen Hoover has a gigantic following. IT ENDS WITH US runs 130 minutes and is rated PG-13. Directed by Justin Baldini with screenplay by Christy Hall. Stars Blake Lively, known for her roles in THE GOSSIP GIRL, SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS and THE TOWN (!).

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. Three shows only, Sun the 11th and Mon the 12th.  LoA is on the short list of greatest movies of all time. I can guarantee you that it will sizzle like the Sahara up on our big screen. And yes, the auditorium will be a cool, air-conditioned 70 degrees and the great David Lean epic will have a short intermission at halftime. Come and see!!!

JOIN or DIE.  “This may be the most important documentary you will ever see.” Scholar and Political Scientist Robert Putnam has a theory. Many, if not most, of our societal problems are caused by the 60% decline in participation in clubs, leagues, groups and social gatherings. This doc nails the importance of social equity, or our lack thereof. Together on stage will be several local leaders, politicians, and volunteers that steer the USS Bainbridge as we navigate these muddy, shark filled waters in 2024.  This night is all about community; ours. One night only, Aug 17 at 6:30.

DANCING with the DEAD. A multi-media event with Filmmaker Ward Serrill (The Heart of the Game; The Bowmakers) on Port Townsend’s Bill Porter. Porter, who goes by the pen name Red Pine, is a renowned translator of ancient Chinese poetry. He has published over thirty books, including Road to Heaven, Bill is a living gateway to ancient Chinese history and culture. Join Ward Serrill for post-screening Q&A, a performance by singer Spring Cheng and a conversation with Red Pine moderated by poet Tim McNulty.

GODFATHER FESTIVALE. Labor Day Weekend. If LAWRENCE of ARABIA is the cinematic thunder, DON VITO CORLEONE is the lightning. Four days, three films, two sides of one coin. Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece of the Mario Puzo novel. This bigger than life saga of the Corleone family, like LAWRENCE, deserves to be seen on the biggest screen yo

ONCE ON ENEMY, Chapter 12


The final chapter opens with the JCs update on the fundraising drive to bring the Fujita family back to Brookings. After the celebratory event, Tommy and Howard exchange notes on the ramifications of the historic event they have helped create. Nobou and Yoshi prepare to travel, Nobou packing one last mysterious box at the last moment. A few days later The Fugita’s are introduced to the community at a BBQ, where Nobou meets Howard and Keith Johnson. 

Later that evening the Nobou is formally introduced in a packed gymnasium. The mayor introduces Nobou and Yoshi translates the emotional letter Nobou has composed for the special occasion. Yoshi is moved to tears as he reads his father’s heartfelt message of peace to the audience. In a series of unrehearsed actions, Nobou opens the mysterious box and hands his 400 year-old family katana to his eldest son, who is then instructed to bequeath the priceless heirloom to the mayor as a symbol friendship, saying, “that it is in the finest Samauri tradition to pledge peace and friendship by presenting a sword to a former enemy.” 

The next day is the parade, a truly spectacular event.

It is now 1997 as Howard and Yoriko leave the Redwood Cinema after viewing FARGO. They critique the film adding their thoughts and ironic metaphorical connections to their own unique adventure. Howard concludes the exchange by noting that Nobou was an honorable man, “Once an Enemy, and now a hero, a great plot twist.” The story returns to the tree-planting ceremony atop Mt Emily where a huge crowd witnesses the symbolic planting of a cedar tree in Nobou’s honor and memory. 

They make one final visit to the Brookings library to view the katana and model airplane, thanking each other for their part in this incredible narrative.

We fade to black as the sound of Nobou’s E14Y1 aircraft can almost be heard flying Ito the setting sun.

Thank you for joining us on this small but important adventure. Since the first words were typed in 2020, through yesterday’s final reading, this has indeed been a labor of love. It has been MY great honor to uncover so much rich material in the researching of this project. To recap, to date we have 1) The screenplay, 2) Its reading, as audiobook and 3) The hope that these two will lead to the production of a two-minute trailer and perhaps even a graphic novel of the same name. Four, of course, would be the funding for a feature-length motion picture.

THE COMMENTARY.

I am growing rather weary of navigating through my flow of consciousness cinema polemics only to be forced to edit 50% because I exceeded the allocated word count. Therefore, effective immediately, I am going to try the bare-bones, just the facts ma’am style popularized in the 30’s by Papa Hemingway. You know, only one adjective per page discipline. Here goes.

JANET PLANET. Fans of Bergman, Murakami and the classic minimalists will adore this observational coming of age character study. Those in the Wes Anderson, Yargos Lanthimos or Ari Astor camp most likely will not appreciate its deliberate pacing, introspective atmosphere and extended stretches of natural ambient sound. Annie Baker is a celebrated playwright trying her hand at the game of film. Much like her young subject, we are left with the ambiguity of uncertainty. Do I dance or do I just watch as others do? I am mesmerized by the final scene, perhaps from knowing all to well what was taking place. And yes, I am a Bergman fan. 

WIDOW CLICQUOT, 90minutes and rated PG13. Three days only folks!!! For those of you who came out for our French cooking epic, MENU - PLAISIRS - LES TROISGROS  a few months back, here is another slice in the life of a French wine-maker, fighting against the usual cast of antagonists, the weather, insects, drought and enough bias, bigotry, intolerance and prejudice to fill ten wine casks. After all, a widow is not supposed to have the skill set necessary to direct the operation of creating the world’s finest champagne. Oui?

TOUCH. 121 minutes and rated R. A romantic and thrilling story that spans several decades and continents; TOUCH follows one widower's emotional journey to find his first love who disappeared 50 years ago, before his time runs out. Sitting at a solid 92% at Rotten Tomatoes, I am looking forward to finding out A) if he will be successful and B) why his time is running out. After all, every one of us has a running clock.

JOIN or DIE. We are 100 days from the 2024 elections. You know the stakes. It is Freedom & Democracy vs a Fascist Dictatorship. Simple as that. I will not sit idly by and allow the catastrophic chaos and white nationalism to win the day. ONCE AN ENEMY, CHAPTER 11

Moving quickly towards reconciliation, Howard hikes to Mt Emily where he has a date with destiny, his dark night of the soul. 

Nobou has created a dojo, workmanlike and utilitarian, in the warehouse of his hardware store, its only embellishments a life-size statue of a Samurai in full battle gear and a rack of ceremonial kanatas, and their shorter, sister blades, the wakizashi. After store closing, Nobou and his apprentice engage in a no-holds-barred session withe the bamboo sticks. The Master delivers lessons in fighting, life, war, and honor.

At the Brookings Harbor Cafe, Howard returns to make the peace as the gang continues to search for a creative solution to their assignment from Bill and the JC’s. In a dramatic scene Tommy is hit with the lightning bolt of inspiration after an examination of the brass bomb fragment that Howard found while cleaning out his shed. It is from the fist incindiary bomb that Nobou dropped in 1942. Tommy presents his idea and Pandora’s box is opened. 

The invitation has reached Fugitas and, as in Brookings, there is dissent. Lot’s of it. After Yoshi’s persuasion Nobou agrees to ‘think about’ the invite, finally agreeing after a powerful dream in which he accepts the offer as an opportunity to demonstrate his allegiance to the code of Bushido.

The chapter ends in 1997 as Howard and Yoriko fly fish the Rogue River deep in discussion on how this incredible series of events that begun in 1942 has brought them together to try to unravel the very mysteries of life. It is becoming clear that paradox plays a large part.

The commentary: Coming on the heels of LA CHIMERA, THE BEAST AND KINDS of KINDNESS, THELMA is a refreshing change of pace. It's “Cute.” I really wanted this to be our next On Golden Pond. I do however, tip my cap to 93 year old Thelma Post, actress June Squibb and stunt double Judy Pascoe for their gumption and longevity. 

JANET PLANET. In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. As the months pass, three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet and her spellbinding nature. In her solitary moments, Lacy inhabits an inner world so extraordinarily detailed that it begins to seep into the outside world. Written and Directed by Annie Baker, Starts Zoe Ziegler. And Will Patton, one of my faves, as Wayne. 

THE SPIRIT OF UBUNTU. Archbishop Desmond Tutu explained it this way: “One of the sayings in our country is Ubuntu — the essence of being human. Ubuntu speaks particularly about the fact that you can’t exist as a human being in isolation. It speaks about our interconnectedness … We think of ourselves far too frequently as just individuals, separated from one another, whereas you are connected and what you do affects the whole world. When you do well, it spreads out; it is for the whole of humanity.” One showing only with cast, and local affiliates joining in for discussion. Wednesday July 31 @ 6:45. 

THE GEOFFREY CASTLE SHOW. BAINBRIDGE ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL, SECOND SATURDAY’S, aka, LATE NIGHT AT THE LYNWOOD. BIFF Show-runner, Charles Poekel has a sixth-sense for picking cool, off the grid films. I can guarantee it will be entertaining, and probably not cute. 

JOIN OR DIE. I am not getting paid to say this. I am not a shill. I say this without being coerced, blackmailed or otherwise obliged to do so. Here is my statement, in the form of a promise. “I WILL NOT STAND BY AND WITNESS OUR 248 YEAR EXPERIMENT IN DEMOCRACY END ON MY WATCH.”  Further, I could not stomach the guilt I would surely feel as a result of the November 24 elections won by fascists, white supremacists, power hungry misogynistic, AR totin’ racist, deplorable motherfuckers bent on monetizing the US Presidency at the expense of the poor and aged - and having not done EVERYTHING in my power to keep our ship afloat.
