Today, we talk about the historical biggest Black burlesque exhibit that was community geared. We also dive into the world of the crafting of the exhibit and my experience with it.

Margo Su and Su Muy Key were pioneering Chinese-Mexican burlesque performers who played a significant role in shaping the entertainment landscape of mid-20th-century Mexico. As both artists and entrepreneurs, they were instrumental in the creation and success of two of Mexico City's most iconic venues: Teatro Margo and Teatro Blanquita. These theaters became cultural landmarks, known for their vibrant variety shows that blended music, comedy, dance, and burlesque. Through their performances and productions, Margo Su and Su Muy Key not only captivated audiences but also challenged stereotypes and expanded the visibility of Asian-Mexican identity in the performing arts. Their legacy continues to be remembered as a vital chapter in Mexico’s theatrical and multicultural history.

Located in San Francisco, this legendary venue played a pivotal role in the world of Chinese burlesque and entertainment, breaking barriers and redefining nightlife in mid-20th-century America.

On today’s ‘History of the Shimmy,’ we’re kicking off our AAPI Heritage Month celebration by honoring our very first legend — the fierce and unforgettable Tura Satana. Join us as we look back on her groundbreaking life and career, and explore the lasting impact she made on burlesque and beyond.

Born in the late 19th century, burlesque began as a cheeky parody of more "serious" theatre, blending comedy, dance, and music with a daring flair that both shocked and delighted audiences. As the form grew in popularity, the early 1900s saw the rise of touring burlesque circuits across the United States, most notably the Columbia Wheel and the Mutual Wheel. These organized circuits turned burlesque into a massive industry, with troupes traveling city to city, playing grand vaudeville-style houses and establishing a system of seasonal tours that would become the backbone of the industry.
