The Hoof of the Horse Podcast

With the IHCS 2025 approaching, I wanted to share this conversation I had with with David Hallock at the last one, to learn more about his life and work, as well as his research into the digital cushion. David also has taken almost every possible farrier exam out there, so it was interesting to hear all about that too.

In this episode I sat down with Esco Buff, a farrier who is both a doctorate and a minister. We talk about radiography, his studies on fescue toxicity, passing on old knowledge to new farriers, limb length disparity, plus his work with camels, eagles, turtles and a whole host of other animals. We spoke about so many topics, there’s too much to list here!

Curtis Burns is well known in our industry, and I was happy to sit down with him earlier this year at IHCS to find out more about his journey into hoof-care, how he created his products and why, breaking down where farrier-vet relationships can go wrong and how to avoid it… plus much much more. It was great to speak with him - listen now to hear some great insights and anecdotes from Curtis.

This episode I am joined by Pelle Algotsson, who I met up with at a clinic we held for farriers and vets late last year. We had a lot to talk about, I hope you enjoy the podcast.

As ever, we cover a lot in this episode, where I interviewed Valentin during a clinic we had near Seville in Spain. We talk about shoeing in both dry and wet climates, as well as farrier schools, qualifications, associations, federations… and more!

Auli Mantila started her hoof-care career a bit later than most do, and her commutes to farrier school actually inspired her to create something in her other profession - which is a very unusual one for a farrier! I won’t spoil it, listen to the podcast to find out what it is.

We also discuss Finn horses, and shoeing in sub zero temperatures, with horses that can have frozen hooves and an inch of snow on them, plus many other interesting parts of being a farrier in Finland.

After seeing his presentations at the IHCS 2023, I had to get an interview with Costa Rican vet-farrier Ramon Batalla. In this episode we talk about radiography and venograms in hoof-care, as well as some great personal insights and stories from his life in the industry.

I was happy to finally sit down with Sam Durham for a podcast interview, having the opportunity last year at a clinic we organised in California with the Farrier Center and Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School. We cover a lot in this episode, from farm life to running multi-farrier practices, AFA examinations and conventions, and much more.
