One of the major statistics that keeps showing up again and again both in Homelessness, Incarceration and Trafficking, is that for example in Los Angeles 80% of trafficked victims actually were in foster care. 75% of those incarcerated in America were in the foster care system at some point.  50% of homelessness, were in foster care at some point... Forgive me for speaking for the rest of the team but the reason why we are all so passionate about this as if we catch up the problems upstream, (reforming the foster care system in the United States of America, as well being able to navigate reunifying children back to their homes, or finding them a forever family a safe and loving family if they can't go back to their families) then we will actually catch up all of those things upstream and reduce significantly those numbers

I was at a Mexican orphanage, and after being there for some time, I finally asked the executive director “how did all these kids' parents die?” and he said, “They're not dead.”

He said, “They are kids who've been abused, neglected and abandoned… some of the parents are in prison or in prostitution and in almost every case bad addiction is involved. And my wife said, “Oh my gosh, these are the same kids here in the States, but we just call them something different." And that was a real lightbulb moment and she realized “I can fulfill God's purpose in my life where I live in every county in the United States are kids who need that help.”

What is the Orphan Myth Project? 

OrphanMyth.org is an organization dedicated to help change some commonly held beliefs about orphans and what it takes to support the world’s most vulnerable children, both in the United States foster care system and in orphanages around the world.

Elin Kelsey shares her expertise and unique perspective on tackling human challenges with hope and optimism. Elin talks about her experiences exploring nature as a child, her pursuit of  education, and volunteer opportunities that led to becoming a children's author for climate education themed books. Elin shares how to frame large problems and create personal, hope driven interactions with environmental problems and how to seek out current solutions and update longstanding narratives and inaccuracies.

When we try to handle these things on an individual basis and they're issues that are actually happening at a national scale or global scale, the scale is skewed so one of the things we do see happening is the emergence of a lot of mental and emotional well being issues... we see this rise of of terms like “compassion fatigue” or “eco anxiety” being now recognized by the American Psychological Association & the Canadian Psychological Association... These are real issues that people face when they have a sense of despair about the state of the planet and about their own well being. What becomes really important is being able to see what's happening at the appropriate scale, so that you can lessen that pressure on yourself instead of  feeling like it's all sitting on your shoulders.
