Laura and her husband, Tad, always wanted children when they got married and dreamed of their family together. When their third daughter, Lanie, was born, Laura noticed that she was not developing like her two, older, typical siblings had. Following her instincts, Laura and Tad received the diagnosis that Lanie has a rare, DNA sequencing mutation that will have a profound, lifelong impact on Lanie.
Laura talks about what it felt like to receive a diagnosis that Lanie's doctor had never heard of before and how she and her family navigated the many surgeries, therapies and family adaptations that were to come. In the midst of caring for Lanie, Laura grieved her dreams of a typical child's experience and talks about how some of the dreams she was sure were lost, came back around in unexpected ways.
Rachael and Laura discuss where Laura and Tad fall on the Enneagram and how their different personality styles affected how they received the news of Lanie's diagnosis and how they handled the challenges that were to come. Laura also talks about how special needs parenting affects their marriage and the skills they have developed to help one another feel supported and share the load in a more empathetic way.
Laura transparently admits her resentment towards God. Laura expresses her unconscious sense of entitlement that losing her father in her own childhood "should" have cleared her from future heartache. Laura and Tad courageously wrestled with their own fears of possible future loss in conceiving a fourth child. Laura conveys the challenges of raising a family with 4 children, 6 and under, and the beauty she has learned to appreciate with a fresh perspective on God's unexpected blessings.
