The Hopecast with Rachael Flick

The Hopecast-Episode 29-After the Boulder Shooting - How to Go the Distance Supporting the Survivors

Listen Later

In the aftermath of a tragedy or disaster, attention is focused on the loss and people want to help. Sympathy cards and casseroles seem to stream in within the first few weeks. Then, somewhat quickly, the people who came in the immediate aftermath begin to trickle away.

But what many who have grieved a loved one or experienced a trauma will tell you, is that the hardest part are the months yet to come. Listen to fellow widows, Ginger Gilbert Ravella and Rachael Flick discuss how to be a part of the long term solution for people in your community who are grieving.

Ginger Gilbert Ravella's first husband, Major Troy Gilbert, was killed as a fighter pilot on a mission in Iraq. Ginger describes her experience of becoming a widow with five children under the age of 8; and how her support network rallied around her and her children for the months and years to come.

Rachael and Ginger also discuss how to help the military members and first responders, who struggle with survivors guilt and PTSD, after watching their comrades fall in the line of duty.

Ginger and her Chapter 2 husband, Colonel Jim Ravella, have written a book called "Hope Found." You can learn more about Ginger's ministry to widows through Be Still Ministries and Never Alone Widows at www.theanchorofhope.com
