Although the term has been used and abused for years, I'd say, Brandon B. is an underground legend. He was in probably the most beloved hip-hop group in Arizona history, Supermarket, which then spawned the relatively unknown yet very influential outfit, Gametightelectro. That group then birthed the name/concept of 'Gurp City', which in itself is a micro-movement through NorCal. In our conversation we chat about it all. Today's episode is with brothers Gideon and Nick Black formerly of the hip-hop duo Lexicon. Who released their first recorded material back in 1998, in the group they went by Big Oak and Nick Fury, respectfully. We hadn't seen one another in 10 years or more and recorded this in West L.A. in April of 2018. They recently created a collective named EXGF and remain very involved in the music industry. My directorial debut was also their first music video for the song 'Nikehead'. We recall in great detail the making of said video. They just opened a new website to commemorate the history of their group, which chronicles much of their journey. Hopefully this conversation will also act as a companion to that, which you can see here: http://www.lexicon.rip/chronological/ - The photo used I shot in Upstate NY in the year 2000 or 2001 with a Canon AE1, I don't recall the film, I think it was in January. Sean Bohrman and I went to college together in a small California town called Arcata. No, not Arcadia, that is in Los Angeles. Arcata at the very top of that state. We graduated from the Humboldt State University's School of Journalism in the early 2000's. We worked at the school paper, The Lumberjack. Where I contributed album review and music features and Sean madly penned manifestos. We had both long since decided what we wanted from life long before college, but to incubate and trip-out at Humboldt was a purely rad coincidence. Last time I saw him was 2012 SXSW and the last time I saw Lee, his partner in the Burger Records empire was at Third Man in Nashville with People's Temple. We recorded this at their awesome, brick and mortar store in Fullerton, California. It was fun and really made me miss California, because everyone was stoned and happy.
