At around 11 PM on November 14th, 1997, 14-year-old Reena Virk arrived at a late-night party at Shoreline Community Middle School in View Royal, British Columbia. Soon after arriving, police were called to the school, and the children in attendance scattered. When Reena did not return home, her mother called the Saanich Police Department and reported her missing. They initially believed her to be a runaway, but they did work on looking for her around the area. On November 22nd, the body of a teenage girl was found by a Dive Unit among the reeds in the Portage Inlet, and was confirmed to be that of Reena Virk. The police constable operating the helicopter above the area said it was immediately clear to him that the figure he was seeing in the water was the body of the girl they had been looking for for days. What happened between that party and the murder of a young girl would become one of the biggest national tragedies Canada had seen, and became a catalyst for a moral panic that became known as “girl violence.”

On Friday, March 31st, 2006, Ohio State University medical student, Brian Shaffer, was officially free for Spring Break. He and his father, Randy, went out to a steak dinner to celebrate, and Randy immediately clocked how exhausted his son was. He had stayed up all night the evening before cramming for his exams. So, Randy was admittedly worried when Brian said he was going out drinking with his friend Clint Florence later that evening, but he kept his concerns to himself. So, at 9 PM, Brian met Clint at the Ugly Tuna Saloona, a bar in the South Campus Gateway complex on High Street in Columbus, Ohio.

In July of 2025, detectives in Austin, Texas reached out to the Lexington Police Department in Lexington, Kentucky. They had received a match from the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network, which connected a .380 shell casing recovered from a homicide at the Nixon Hearing Aid Center in Lexington to one that had been found at the scene of a 1991 unsolved quadruple homicide at a frozen yogurt shop in Austin.
